Better Days for MD Strays

Browse News

MARYLAND – Three Hagerstown, Md. dogs are the benefactors of an $800,000 inheritance left by their owner, who recently passed away.

Buckshot, Katie and Obu-Jet had been strays before they came into Ken Kemper's life. It was that fact that enticed him to bring the dogs into his home. To ensure they stayed off the streets when he died, Kemper set up a trust fund.

Last year, Mr. Kemper passed away. As per the arrangements of his trust the dogs will live full, happy lives thanks to the funds he set aside, and the people he arranged to care for them.

Their former owner left behind $400,000 and a home valued at the same amount, leaving a grand total of $800,000. That's far more than these pooches could hope to spend, but friend and in-home caretaker Roy Grady says they're worth it.

The beagle and two Labrador mixes won't have any shortage of space to romp at Kemper's home – and their health-care is top notch too. Grady says every Friday he treats them to a spaghetti and meatball dinner, complete with garlic bread.

Karin Anderson, the executor of Kemper's estate, said if there is anything left after the dogs pass, it will be donated to an animal-related charity. Friends say donating the remaining funds is what Kemper would have wanted.

Kemper, an employee for Voice of America, was known to bring home strays now and then. And although the amount pales in comparison to what Leona Helmsley's left her dog, we still think it's a good thing that the trend is becoming more common.

Do you plan to leave money for your pets? What will you do to safeguard your pets if they outlive you?

These dogs loyalty is being well repaid. It is nice that they have a caretaker who really seems to care for them.

We have 3 people who have all asked to care for our dogs if something happens to us. They would be provided for financially as well! It makes you feel good when people ask if they can have your dogs because they are very special! Nobody knows money ould be involved!

What a heart warming story. Wish this could happen more to those poor animals who find themselves homeless and have no one to care for them after a death, that is nervewracking enough for them.

Very thoughtful and generous of their owner. It would be great to see the money used to benefit a bunch of homeless, needy dogs. What a job that caregiver has!

Nice story. I'm glad this guarantees the dogs will be well cared for and am happy that remaining funds will go to an animal charity. Not that I have much money to leave but I also want it to go for my pets. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think there are some states where you can't leave your money directly to your pets.

It's always a good idea to plan for your pets. You never know what might happen to you and you don't want your pets going to an animal shelter or put down.

Rest in peace Ken! I think he did the right thing by these animals. In Ohio, you can set up trusts for your animals so they are cared for when you die. Don't wait, check it out now.

Fine story. Mr. Kemper not only left his four-legged heirs mucho bucks, but a home, and provided for a in-home caretaker. They couldn't ask for more.

I think it is a great idea especially since they are apart of the family and many people are not having kids so their pets are the kids. I hope the trend continues.

Any of us would want to make sure that our companions are cared for after our death. I think leaving our beloved pets homeless at our death scares all of us. This gentleman made sure that it didn't happen to his formerly stray friends!

These are very lucky dogs. And their owner must have loved them very much to make this provision for them. It's also great to hear that any remaining funds with be donated to an animal charity.

That is kinda cool. I really like that the left over money will go to a charity of some sort. Seriously thought? How do you spend $400,000 on three dogs?

I am in the process of drafting my will. I am 34 and have no plans on going anywhere soon, but want to make sure that things are not left for those I leave behind. A big part of that is ensuring for the wellbeing of my pets. My two dogs were originally my dad's dogs before he passed away. While he had planned extensively for his passing, his pets were not included in those plans. If I had not been able to take them, the two dogs and the family cat would have been truly out of luck! Mary, our cat has since passed away, but I want to make sure that my three cats and my dogs have security if something should happen. No need to add to the trauma of losing their owner and having to change living arrangements by having total uncertainty about where they will live and who will take care of them. I hate to think of them having to go to a shelter.

it's great that he cared for his dogs but they could get along on a whole lot less and the rest could have been better used by a needy shelteer

I often wish that I had enough money to leave for my pets care when I'm gone. My family and I do discuss what will happen to our pets, and who will care for them. I do know that there are shelters that provide care if donations are made, but I know that none of mine would fair well in a shelter at this point in their lives. So, as I age I know I will have fewer, just in case. And I will make sure that they are older, to increase the chances they and I will go close to each other.
