Bat-Wielding Owner Snatches Cat, Donor Pays Bill

Browse News

DALLAS -- A once bat-crazy robbery tale has transformed into a far more sobering story of a cash-strapped man desperate to reclaim his cat.

Roger Booth, 59, threatened shelter workers with a baseball bat and fled a shelter parking lot with his cat on Monday, after failing to pay a required fee. Now that strangers have helped him settle his $132 debt, Booth hopes to settle what he deems a misunderstanding.

Booth, who is reportedly suffering from Stage 4 prostate cancer, says he simply couldn't afford the fee and didn't want to see his cat die in the shelter.

"I didn't want to go to jail, but I didn't want my cat to die, either," Booth said. "I took the chance because I didn't want him to die for ridiculously high prices."

Booth first located his missing gray and blue short-haired cat, Mr. Gray, at the Dallas Animal Services' shelter in early October, manager Kent Robertson told The Associated Press.

A neighbor had turned the cat over to the city, even though Mr. Gray reportedly was outfitted with identification tags.

Booth, however, didn't return for Mr. Gray until Monday, when he signed in at the animal shelter at approximately 11:30 a.m. Booth was then granted the cat, which he placed into an empty carrier case and loaded into his car.

At that point, shelter workers requested Booth pay a $132 fee, covering a rabies shot and microchip implant, as well as boarding fees.

Booth became enraged and drew a wooden baseball bat from his car, waving it and threatening shelter employees. He then retreated to his car, while still wielding the bat, and drove off wildly with the cat.

"This was pretty extreme," Robertson said.

The cat-crazed owner did not inflict any harm on the shelter employees or animals, though he almost ran over two people with his Ford-150.

"I haven't ever experienced this before," Robertson said in another interview with The Dallas Morning News. "Usually, people thank us for rescuing their animals. This was pretty extreme."

After news of Booth's medical condition -- and potential charges of aggravated robbery, as well as two counts of aggravated assault -- began to circulate in various media reports, Dallas Animal Services began to receive calls from people offering to settle Booth's debt.

"If the guy really, really doesn't have the money, I'll pay it for him; not that he was right for doing what he did," one caller reportedly told the shelter.

Strangers' kindness has now left Booth with one less worry to consider.

"Thank you very much," Booth said to his financial supporters, according to Dallas-Fort Worth News 8. "Look at this face?" he continued, gesturing toward Mr. Gray. "How could you put a needle in him and kill him?"

Though Booth remains under review by the police, he expressed a lack of intentional wrongdoing.

"I didn't rob a bank," he said. "I just saved my cat."

What a terrible position this guy was in. One can imagine how much he relied on his cat's support during his illness, and although some may think what he did extreme, I think he just did the first thing that came to him to save his cat. After all he's been through, people thinking him crazy just isn't the big issue. He didn't hurt anyone, nor do I believe he intended to. I don't think I would have reacted quite this way, but then, who knows? Thank goodness, I'm not in the midst of such an ordeal. I probably would have cursed them all out, gotten arrested on the spot, and lost my cat to boot. :-)

As a shelter executive I do find this story sad. I would have thought than when the cat was returned to his owner the bill would have been presented at that time. If the gentleman could not afford to pay it then the staff member should have gone to the manager and explained the situation. I can't imagine a responsible manager not understanding the situation and hardship this man was facing and excused the charge. But staff members who are responsible for enforcing the rules , sometimes get caught up in their often heart breaking day and don't think about the possibility of an exception. I hope everyone understands that I'm sure everyone wanted the same thing -- for the cat to get safely home.

He was wrong but I can understand some of his frustration. Why so much money and why did his neighbors turn in the cat. If the neighbors knew it was his cat they should be in trouble too.

WOW! He doesn't realize what he did was wrong? I can sympathize with him but his condition doesn't give him the right to behave the way he did.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. I don't endorse dangerous behavior, and a little bit of negotiation probably could have saved a lot of trouble, but the story is still pretty touching, even if terribly depressing.

I'm glad Mr. Booth got his cat back and that no one was hurt. I wonder if he took the time to explain his situation before swinging the bat, if the shelter would have understood and this story would not have happened this way.

This guy sounds kind of crazy to me. Hopefully he doesn't ever harm his cat in another one of his rages. And I agree with some of the other comments, if he can't afford the fee to pick him up, how does he afford to care for him? What if the cat gets sick and he has to pay a vet bill? Is he going to go into a rage at the vet too?

I'm with you here. It's really a bad idea to threaten someone with a bat. Maybe let his restitution be in a shelter but he should not get away with it.

I think this story is a little sensational. Would the shelter really keep and euthanize this cat because this person didn't have the money?!?

i have one more comment that I forgot to mention...shelters are required to hold any animals that come in for 10 days. If he contacted the shelter, and explained his situation, then a shelter would not euthanize a pet...that person is given an extension on the amount of time the shelter can hold them, within reason. There was no reason to get so upset with the staff; he put the lives of many people at danger, including himself, when he drove away. Totally irresponsible.

Thats kind of sad. I mean he loved his cat enough to be crazy like that...I'm glad someone else helped him out financially. But like it's been said in previous comments, there will be fees associated with maintaining the cat. Where will the strangers be then?

Sounds like all he wanted was his cat back and felt like they would take it away so he grabbed the bat from the car. I can't understand if the cat had ID, why they microchipped the cat. I can understand the rabies shot but not that. Must be more as to why the neighbor didn't return the cat to him too, unless its a neighbor from hell that likes to cause trouble. I'm glad someone paid his bill if he could not afford it. Hope everything works out for him and his cat.

How sad to love your animal but not be able to provide the fee to bring him home. I wonder about his neighbor and I'm sure the veterinary office would have worked something out with him but I can understand the desperation. We all react differently but I'm sure happy he has his kitty and kind people paid the bill.

I would probually have done the same thing if the shelter had my cat and wanted a high fee like that. The neighbor should have just returned the cat to its rightful owner.
I glad that some caring citizens could help out the guy. God Bless them!

there is NEVER an excuse for violent behavior. These people were just doing their job...there are rules that they have to follow. How would he like it if someone when to his work-place and expected him to break the rules? Would he risk his job for a stranger? I think not.

Wow, The man should have called the police instead of pulling out a bat. OR he should have asked about a payment plan. There was no need to threaten the shelter workers.

This was very extreme but I am sure the man is not thinking clearly. He also didn't want to take the chance of it being put down, Which doesn't sound to likely if they gave the cat its rabies shot and micro chipped it. /but I am sure he is dealing with too much.

some states require a current rabies vaccine on all domestic animals as part of their law. Rabies vaccines are usually given to animals that enter a shelter immediately to protect the people who work there, as there is no cure for the disease.

Well, he got his cat back, too bad he had to do what he did to get it back, some people don't have a lot of money for such things as microchipping and such. I feel a shelter should enforce the spay and neutering but I don't know about charging for microchipping, if you have that do you also have to purchase a license?

This is a very odd story. I feel bad for the guy but don't agree with what he had done. He has cancer and understand that money is scarce. But im pretty sure that if he talked to the shelter and explained this to them..maybe they could of worked out some kind of playment plan

This is a very sad case for this man. I can understand times are hard these days especially when you have a medical problem. But, this does not justify what the man did. Prostate cancer is not a death sentence and can be treated. But, he should have looked at alternatives before going to such extremes. I don't think he should come off without any kind of consequence for his behavior. Maybe he should learn to keep his cat inside and he won't have this problem.

Wow. Though he went about it the wrong way, I can't blame him for being determined to get his cat. The fees do sound high in the sense that 1.) the cat had tags; he shouldn't have had to have anything done to him while there. Boarding fees? Whereas I can understand having them, I can also see where the shelter could have waived them. 2.) Why did the neighbor turn the cat over? There's more to this than is explained.

I feel bad for the guy, and though he shouldn't have threatened people physically nor taken the chance with reckless driving, he shouldn't face charges. Extenuating circumstances, surely, and if we can let people off for much more, I'd say it's deserved here.

Prayers for Mr Booth and Mr Gray. And kudos to all those kind people donating for his bill.

I am glad he loves his cat but if he could take that aggression out on people, I worry that he could do that to the animals. I am sure the shelter could have worked something out with the man. Maybe both parties needed to communicate a bit better.

Sometimes everyone is wrong and everyone is right. Regardless of which side of the fence you fall on, let's chalk this up as one of those experiences that makes shelter life so interesting. If nothing else, I believe this generated publicity for the shelter, possibly promoting the need for more donations - that would be a nice ending to this story. Man gets cat, shelter gets donations and exposure... everyone wins in the end.
