Bat-Wielding Owner Snatches Cat, Donor Pays Bill

Browse News

DALLAS -- A once bat-crazy robbery tale has transformed into a far more sobering story of a cash-strapped man desperate to reclaim his cat.

Roger Booth, 59, threatened shelter workers with a baseball bat and fled a shelter parking lot with his cat on Monday, after failing to pay a required fee. Now that strangers have helped him settle his $132 debt, Booth hopes to settle what he deems a misunderstanding.

Booth, who is reportedly suffering from Stage 4 prostate cancer, says he simply couldn't afford the fee and didn't want to see his cat die in the shelter.

"I didn't want to go to jail, but I didn't want my cat to die, either," Booth said. "I took the chance because I didn't want him to die for ridiculously high prices."

Booth first located his missing gray and blue short-haired cat, Mr. Gray, at the Dallas Animal Services' shelter in early October, manager Kent Robertson told The Associated Press.

A neighbor had turned the cat over to the city, even though Mr. Gray reportedly was outfitted with identification tags.

Booth, however, didn't return for Mr. Gray until Monday, when he signed in at the animal shelter at approximately 11:30 a.m. Booth was then granted the cat, which he placed into an empty carrier case and loaded into his car.

At that point, shelter workers requested Booth pay a $132 fee, covering a rabies shot and microchip implant, as well as boarding fees.

Booth became enraged and drew a wooden baseball bat from his car, waving it and threatening shelter employees. He then retreated to his car, while still wielding the bat, and drove off wildly with the cat.

"This was pretty extreme," Robertson said.

The cat-crazed owner did not inflict any harm on the shelter employees or animals, though he almost ran over two people with his Ford-150.

"I haven't ever experienced this before," Robertson said in another interview with The Dallas Morning News. "Usually, people thank us for rescuing their animals. This was pretty extreme."

After news of Booth's medical condition -- and potential charges of aggravated robbery, as well as two counts of aggravated assault -- began to circulate in various media reports, Dallas Animal Services began to receive calls from people offering to settle Booth's debt.

"If the guy really, really doesn't have the money, I'll pay it for him; not that he was right for doing what he did," one caller reportedly told the shelter.

Strangers' kindness has now left Booth with one less worry to consider.

"Thank you very much," Booth said to his financial supporters, according to Dallas-Fort Worth News 8. "Look at this face?" he continued, gesturing toward Mr. Gray. "How could you put a needle in him and kill him?"

Though Booth remains under review by the police, he expressed a lack of intentional wrongdoing.

"I didn't rob a bank," he said. "I just saved my cat."

This guy seems like an extremist? Instead of just saying "I'm sorry, have cancer and can't afford this" he threatened people with a bat and then went on the news saying "Look at this face, how could they kill him??" They gave him back no questions asked basically. Sounds like some serious screws loose there....

I am glad that volunteers paid the amount this guy owed the Animal Shelter for his cat. He should not have threatened them with a baseball bat but he is very ill and probably not thinking straight.

interesting. Am I missing something though -- how did he rack up a bill for $132 so quickly? And why couldn't the shelter work with him in some way to pay the fine, or did they try?
I'm glad he got the cat back, although, why did the neighbor bring it in to the shelter in the first place? Does he allow his cat to roam, thus causing a nuisance in the neighborhood? hmmmm - lots of things to think about...

Interesting...hard not to feel sorry for the man considering he has Stage IV cancer and was at risk of losing his buddy, Mr. Gray. Although he may have gone about it in a different way perhaps the neighbor could have talked w/ him before turning in his cat? There probably is a lot that we don't know about the whole situation so it's probably not fair to judge others without the complete story.

I feel bad for the man having cancer and no money to pay for his cat. I just wish that things would have taken place differently. I'm sure is he under alot of stress and losing his cat probably put him over the edge. He did not harm anyone, the fine has been paid by caring people, leave the guy alone, he has a lot of hard times ahead. I hope that he has made future plans for his cat should he no longer be able to care for him.

While I don't agree with his tactics, I'm still happy to see this man has been reunited with his cat. I still don't understand why the neighbor was allowed to drop off this cat at the shelter in the first place.

Why didn't the neighbor bring the cat to the owner if he had tags on him??? Also, why didn't the shelter just contact the owner if they had his information instead of boarding the cat and vaccinating him, maybe the cat had already been vaccinated

I wish this was more clear. How long was the cat there? was it there long enough to be up for adoption and thats why it was given rabies and a microchip and if it was wouldnt it have been cheeper to just let the guy adopt his cat back?

What a rude neighbor to take the cat to the city instead of just giving it back to this guy or leaving it alone. I hope that if that neighbor knew this guy's situation, he would feel awful now.

This story is very confusing. The shelter where I work does not give rabies shots or microchips to stray cats who are being reclaimed. Rabies and license for cats is state law in some of the muncipalities and an owner must provide both as well as pay boarding fees before they can reclaim their cat. An owner would not "get" their cat until the paperwork and fees are taken care of, however, if an owner did not have enough money, we would try to work out something. Most shelters do not have a lot of money and we are taking care of people's lost pets until an owner reclaims. I never understand how owners get upset with a shelter because "they" lost their pet. I am sure there is another side to this story that we are not hearing, but I am glad that the cat is back with his owner.

I can understand how he feels, maybe the cancer has made him unreasonable. The shelter was at fault for not telling him the price before he let him take it to the truck. What was that all about, sounds fishy to me!!!!

I wonder if the neighbor they mentioned brought the cat in knowing who the animal belongs to. Like he just has some kind of beef with Mr. Gray and his cat so the neighbor did that to get even. If that's the case, the neighbor is a total jerk. Anyone else suspicious about that?

As a shelter director, I have had my share of folks who were not happy about having to pay fees to get back their animal. I tell my staff to remain calm and cool during the situation. And if the person stays mad or gets worse to call the law in. And yes, we have had to do that several times. Usually once the law is there and we can get the person calmed down, we can explain why there is a cost involved in getting their animal back. And if the person can not afford to pay, we work out a deal for them to work off the debt at the shelter. Most folks are understand but there is always that one who does not.

Communication may have helped here. If someone can't pay then ask for a donation or discuss money up front before the animal is given back.

At our shelter, folks can ID their pet, but it stays put in cage until paperwork is done and payment taken care of. If the person can not pay, we have them sign an agreement to work x number of hours at the shelter. The amount is $8.00 per hour if they work off the debt.

Wow, not your typical stand and deliver. I'm very glad he got his cat back. I've had family members die of cancer and I know what some of the treatment did to their thought processes. I would have hoped that the shelter would have tried to work something out. Bizarre.

This is a little strange. things just don't add up in this story. I am glad that the cat is ok & that people helped raise money for the cat. I would think that there could have been some kind of deal worked out.

The shelter should of looked at the full story. If they were going to put the cat to sleep as the man said. Why did they mirco chip, and give it a rabies shot.

i am not sure what to think on this story. i can see why he went crazy, he has a cancer that is not curable, and i do know that one thing for people who are sick, is they need company of something. he shouldnt have done what he did, but i guess, he probably just didnt know what to do. and if the cat had tags, why wasnt he called? i know the shelter here would call if the animal had tags. i am just glad that people paid his fees. although, i think maybe he could have worked something out with the shelter to pay it off, like small payments or something, even though they may not do that, but for someone who has large medical bills, i would think it could be possible.....

Have very mixed feelings about this story in that many of us work in shelters and people can not come in with bats to settle a difference. Shelter personnel is doing the best for the animals in their care and should not be assaulted.

However, I do feel for this gentleman as well. Tough situation.

this was a difficult story because you could see how something like this could happen and you do understand how upsetting this was to the owner. He has apologized and I am sure he is sorry for his actions, I am happy that they saw he loved his cat and he is dying and needs his companion back with him. It ended well.

For goodness sakes, if the cat has an owner, wouldn't an organization be glad to reunite this pet with its owner for a fair price. It's not like there's a lack of cats around.

I agree, both sides acted or reacted inappropriately. However, Mr. Booth, having Stage 4 cancer and afraid his friend would die over a mere $132 he couldn't afford to pay was surely under a lot of emotional stress. I would probably do the same thing to save my animal.... I once got into a fist fight with a woman who threatened my dog (and I am NOT a figher) Their your babies and when their threatened, that emotion kicks in.
I'm glad it all worked out in the end.

The rabies shot cost approximately $10.00 and the microchip our shelter offers for $25.00. It would seem the shelter was being a little greedy to me. The man's medical bills are probably out of this world. Where do I go to donate because I can totally empathize with this man.
