Bat-Wielding Owner Snatches Cat, Donor Pays Bill

Browse News

DALLAS -- A once bat-crazy robbery tale has transformed into a far more sobering story of a cash-strapped man desperate to reclaim his cat.

Roger Booth, 59, threatened shelter workers with a baseball bat and fled a shelter parking lot with his cat on Monday, after failing to pay a required fee. Now that strangers have helped him settle his $132 debt, Booth hopes to settle what he deems a misunderstanding.

Booth, who is reportedly suffering from Stage 4 prostate cancer, says he simply couldn't afford the fee and didn't want to see his cat die in the shelter.

"I didn't want to go to jail, but I didn't want my cat to die, either," Booth said. "I took the chance because I didn't want him to die for ridiculously high prices."

Booth first located his missing gray and blue short-haired cat, Mr. Gray, at the Dallas Animal Services' shelter in early October, manager Kent Robertson told The Associated Press.

A neighbor had turned the cat over to the city, even though Mr. Gray reportedly was outfitted with identification tags.

Booth, however, didn't return for Mr. Gray until Monday, when he signed in at the animal shelter at approximately 11:30 a.m. Booth was then granted the cat, which he placed into an empty carrier case and loaded into his car.

At that point, shelter workers requested Booth pay a $132 fee, covering a rabies shot and microchip implant, as well as boarding fees.

Booth became enraged and drew a wooden baseball bat from his car, waving it and threatening shelter employees. He then retreated to his car, while still wielding the bat, and drove off wildly with the cat.

"This was pretty extreme," Robertson said.

The cat-crazed owner did not inflict any harm on the shelter employees or animals, though he almost ran over two people with his Ford-150.

"I haven't ever experienced this before," Robertson said in another interview with The Dallas Morning News. "Usually, people thank us for rescuing their animals. This was pretty extreme."

After news of Booth's medical condition -- and potential charges of aggravated robbery, as well as two counts of aggravated assault -- began to circulate in various media reports, Dallas Animal Services began to receive calls from people offering to settle Booth's debt.

"If the guy really, really doesn't have the money, I'll pay it for him; not that he was right for doing what he did," one caller reportedly told the shelter.

Strangers' kindness has now left Booth with one less worry to consider.

"Thank you very much," Booth said to his financial supporters, according to Dallas-Fort Worth News 8. "Look at this face?" he continued, gesturing toward Mr. Gray. "How could you put a needle in him and kill him?"

Though Booth remains under review by the police, he expressed a lack of intentional wrongdoing.

"I didn't rob a bank," he said. "I just saved my cat."

I would go to some pretty extreme measures to get my pets back, but I think I draw the line at a baseball bat. I do understand his committment to the cat and applaud him on that. I'm glad to see people pitched in to help pay the bill. The cat doesn't know how lucky he is...or maybe he does.

how terrible to have your cat turned in and not have the money to get it back. What he did was wrong but the alternative, doing nothing and having your cat killed wasn't a good answer either.

The man's terminal illness explans his behavior, alittle extreme, but understandable. The shelter staff should of been more workable. If the cat had ID tags, then why did they microchip and do the things that cost him the money????

Wow, this is sort of crazy.... I mean, I think it's extreme, but on the other hand I sympathize with this man, seems he could have went about it a different way though? ??? I am glad he got his cat back, but.... ???

I have a great deal of sympathy for Mr. Booth ~ and also for the shelter workers, who were just trying to do their job. (A special pox on the neighbor who so unkindly took the cat to the shelter!!) Sometimes people in desperate situations behave irrationally, not that that is an excuse ~ but a man that ill probably just couldn't stand to lose his companion.

There's really no excuse for that behavior. I'm glad strangers helped him out, and I wish he was a bit more apologetic. I work in a doctor's office and deal with angry sick people all the time that have cussed at and threatened me because I wouldn't tell them what they wanted to hear. Excusing behavior like this only encourages it. I'm glad he got his cat back, and I think he could have handled it much differently.

This man is under a lot of stress. He just wanted his cat with him. Who knows what anyone of us would do in that situation? I know what stress does to a person. I think I would do anything to keep my babies out of a shelter.

dunno what to say about this one - if he had told the shelter that he was strapped would they have helped? sounds like he didn't give them a chance.

I don't think that this man would normally act this way. He is dealing with cancer and it was probably the last straw when he couldn't get his cat back. He just snapped and grabbed the bat. I'm happy he has his cat back and that some good samaritans paid the bill. Although he shouldn't have behaved the way he did, I hope the shelter will forgive him.

This man is not right in the head. How could the shelter turn the cat over to him!? It is likes a story you hear of children in social services care being returned home to worse, if not the end.

A red flag, other than the HUGE RED FLAG of the baseball bat, was a neighbor calling a shelter. I hope this man and his cat are being watched.

What a crazy story!

Who am I to say what state of mind an terminally ill person is in. The cat may be what gets this guy through each day. However, this could have been handled differently had he just told the shelter his situation. I'm sure they would have understood and worked out something with him. Glad he has Mr. Gray back!

I have mixed feeling about this. One of my parents neighbors just died last week of prostate cancer - so I feel for this man. However, he should have settled this whole dilemma in a different manner. It was very nice of strangers to take care of his debt to the shelter.

Seems as though he overreacted, and I suspect that the shelter would have worked with him on the fees if he had tried talking to them first. I am glad that he got his cat back, I certainly understand his passion for wanting to save his cat. A cherished pet can be one of the most comforting remedies to dealing with illness, and I'm glad that his community recognized his needs and helped by paying the shelter fees.

What is the full story here? The man, Booth, knew his cat was in the shelter and did not pick him up for weeks. Then when he did, could not pay and the bat came out. This is not not normal behavior, even if and when someone so wants his pet from a shelter, esp. with the threat of euthanasia!

I do feel bad for this man. But it is a puzzle.

There are so many details left out of this story...like why the neighbor turned the cat into the shelter in the first place, why the owner thought the cat was about to be euthanized, why the shelter didn't call the number on the I.D. tags, why the owner wasn't keeping the cat's vaccinations up to date, and whether the cat should have been released into the custody of an obviously unstable individual. I feel for the guy, he has health problems...then again, my grandmother had brain cancer and as I recall she never threatened anyone with a baseball bat or almost ran people over because of it.

I agree he over reacted, but it sounds like he was in a rough situation. I'm glad he loves his cat and wanted to save him. He probably should have explained his situation and not threatened the employees who were just doing their jobs.

Shelter staff have plenty of mean people to deal with and I think this guy doesn't deserve the help. They were just trying to do their jobs. I would want the cat in a home with a more stable owner anyway.

I see where the poor man is coming from but he didn't have to take such extreme actions. I would have just gotton in the car with the cat and drove off, telling them to bill me and then try to get someone to lend me the money.

I feel like this can't possilby be the whole story. Who just behaves that irrationally? $132 dollars is not enough money to wave a bat around. Maybe 1000 dollars? But I would pay $100 in a heart beat if my animal was lost...

He is dying of Prostate Cancer. He just wanted his cat back. It seems as if that is the only thing he has. If he had tags why wouldn't the neighbor call or give back the cat to the owner. Instead he had to take it to a shelter. That was wrong! He didn't have to act that way but I can only imagine how much stress he is going through with the cancer, his cat missing. I am glad some one offered to pay his fee.

The way he got his cat back was wrong. But...the cat had tags. instead of micro chipping it and giving the rabies shot, the shelter should have contacted the owner.
I don't think any owner who can prove it, should have to pay to get his lost animal back. Donations should be suficient.

I think Roger Booth went about retrieving his cat in an entirely unacceptable manner. I'm sure if he would have talked to the shelter workers first and explained his situation--they would have let him have his cat and make payments or SOMETHING! Violence is NEVER the answer.....too bad this situation got out-of hand!

You can't blame the poor fellow for doing whatever it takes to get his pet back. Probably the only friend he has! Nobody was harmed so let it be. People say if he would have just explained his situation.... that wouldn't have helped these places have rules to follow. Sadly today its all about money to alot of these places.

What he did was wrong. You can't have a society of bat-weilding citizens threatening every store owner just because they want something they can't pay for! It's true--life is all about money--and greed for it above and beyond life itself........

You can hardly compare this situation to threatening a store owner, its not as if he wanted a piece of furniture that he couldn't afford or robbing a store. What he wanted was already HIS, and since it did have identification tags there was NO reason to do any microchipping or vaccinations, just contact the owner. This sounds like a place that was trying to make money and take advantage of a poor pet owner.

It sounds like there may be more to this story. I wish that it could have been handled in a better way with communication. If I had cancer and my cat was in a shelter and I did not have money to get it out-I may not be rational. I hope that I wouldn't weild a bat but I would do things to get my cat back. I hope that all is settled down now and the man and cat are okay and the shelter workers.
