Bat-Wielding Owner Snatches Cat, Donor Pays Bill

Browse News

DALLAS -- A once bat-crazy robbery tale has transformed into a far more sobering story of a cash-strapped man desperate to reclaim his cat.

Roger Booth, 59, threatened shelter workers with a baseball bat and fled a shelter parking lot with his cat on Monday, after failing to pay a required fee. Now that strangers have helped him settle his $132 debt, Booth hopes to settle what he deems a misunderstanding.

Booth, who is reportedly suffering from Stage 4 prostate cancer, says he simply couldn't afford the fee and didn't want to see his cat die in the shelter.

"I didn't want to go to jail, but I didn't want my cat to die, either," Booth said. "I took the chance because I didn't want him to die for ridiculously high prices."

Booth first located his missing gray and blue short-haired cat, Mr. Gray, at the Dallas Animal Services' shelter in early October, manager Kent Robertson told The Associated Press.

A neighbor had turned the cat over to the city, even though Mr. Gray reportedly was outfitted with identification tags.

Booth, however, didn't return for Mr. Gray until Monday, when he signed in at the animal shelter at approximately 11:30 a.m. Booth was then granted the cat, which he placed into an empty carrier case and loaded into his car.

At that point, shelter workers requested Booth pay a $132 fee, covering a rabies shot and microchip implant, as well as boarding fees.

Booth became enraged and drew a wooden baseball bat from his car, waving it and threatening shelter employees. He then retreated to his car, while still wielding the bat, and drove off wildly with the cat.

"This was pretty extreme," Robertson said.

The cat-crazed owner did not inflict any harm on the shelter employees or animals, though he almost ran over two people with his Ford-150.

"I haven't ever experienced this before," Robertson said in another interview with The Dallas Morning News. "Usually, people thank us for rescuing their animals. This was pretty extreme."

After news of Booth's medical condition -- and potential charges of aggravated robbery, as well as two counts of aggravated assault -- began to circulate in various media reports, Dallas Animal Services began to receive calls from people offering to settle Booth's debt.

"If the guy really, really doesn't have the money, I'll pay it for him; not that he was right for doing what he did," one caller reportedly told the shelter.

Strangers' kindness has now left Booth with one less worry to consider.

"Thank you very much," Booth said to his financial supporters, according to Dallas-Fort Worth News 8. "Look at this face?" he continued, gesturing toward Mr. Gray. "How could you put a needle in him and kill him?"

Though Booth remains under review by the police, he expressed a lack of intentional wrongdoing.

"I didn't rob a bank," he said. "I just saved my cat."

If the cat had ID tags, why didn't the shelter contact the owner to pick up the cat. And why would the neighbor turn the cat in. He obviously loved his cat to go to that extreme.

$132 for what??? How much can a cat eat? I think I would have a few choice words for my neighbor. It's sad that people had to offer to pay for the cat. Like the City of Dallas couldn't write off the cost of the cat care. He does pay taxes!

Too bad the shelter didn't try to work it out with him before such extremes happened. But I must say he does love his cat.

I agree. The shelter should have done something to avoid this, but they may not have seen it coming, of course.

THis is so sad. I can not believe they charged him for microchipping his cat without asking or without knowing it was going to be adopted. Strange set of circumatances. However the state of Texas usually charges very high fees to reclaim your animal.

Its sad that it went so far. But I wouldn't take the chance on my cat either! We do what we have to do...in the heat of the moment we don't necessarily think of options. I wish the owner luck in his battles.

Such a sad state. What he did was not good, but I really can't imagine not being able to get my pets back and having them put to sleep because of not being able to pay some fines.

I am not sure this person is stable enough to own a pet. Even if the staff explained that there was a fee, something should have been worked out without threats and violence.

I don't understand why he waited so long. I can only assume he was hoping Mr. Gray would get adopted. I don't understand why they would microchip the cat just to turn around and euthanize him. Most shelters are strapped for money so this does not make sense to me.

I was not blaming anyone. I SAID that it made no sense for them to microchip the animal only to turn around and euthanize it so I did not understand that part of the story.

I admit it was a bit extreme... the shelter probably would have been willing to work out some kind of payment plan... but I'm really glad he got his kitty back. I'd do just about anything to save my own kitties.

Kudos to whoever helped pay.

What I am wondering is- was he informed that his cat was going to be put down? It seems like he keeps mentioning that in the article. That also makes me wonder if he left the cat in the shelter for so long hopeing someone would adopt his cat and take good care of it; since he obviously is short on funds and might not live too much longer. Then when he found out his cat was going to be put down he decided to get his cat. If we follow this theory he wanted Mr. Gray to have a better home then he could provide at the time, it's not that he didn't want Mr. Gray himself.

This is definitely a weird one. I don't know whether to feel bad or mad at the guy for what he did. I don't agree with his means, but I do think it is good to see an owner who actually cares about his pet. We don't always get a lot of articles like this. I guess we will just have to see how it works out. It is great to hear about strangers being willing to help pay his debt, though.

I agree with the commentors who pointed out that the Mr. Gray's owner waited an awfully long time to retrieve his cat. The article says he found out in early October that Mr. Gray was there but didn't pick him up till mid November? Why did he wait so long? And why didn't the article ask that question? Seems like an obvious thought to followup on. I would've wanted to retrieve my cat as soon as possible. What caused the delay??

That is good. I didn't even catch that such a huge amount of time had gone by. Good question, though. That must be why they put a microchip in the cat.

Yeah, there are better ways to deal with problems. I understand too that he wanted his cat, but it doesn't sound like he even tried to talk it out with the shelter. He just got his bat and began swinging.

This is a little extreme! I'm sure if the cat owner explained his financial situation the shelter would have worked something out with him AND his cat obviously wasn't going to be killed - the cat was at the shelter for weeks before his owner went to pick him up (he must have really missed him!) Something should happen to this guy - a psych eval at the least

If all this man has is his cat, and if he is as sick as they say, then I can understand and sympathize. I have to say that some of the fees that shelters charge can be outrageous. Not all of them, but some of them.

i agree, and who asked the shelter to microchip his cat for him if it was already IDed? his methods were a little extreme and could have probably just been talked thru, but if he's really strapped for cash, i could understand his frustration at the fee for just returning his cat

I don't get it. Found him in October and just went to pick him up? What was he doing in the meantime? He really must have missed his kitty. Even if he was in the hospital receiving treatments and home sick, someone could have picked the kitty up and paid less money if they went sooner. Aside from not being able to understand this, I can see if he went to the shelter and getting upset if he didn't have the money. How could someone honestly leave their pet there knowing what their fate might be? But I am sure if he explained the situation and said he had to get a loan or something they wouldn't have done anything to the kittie. Right?

Im sorry but this is ridiculous. The story says he located the cat in early October but didnt get it till mid November? Obviusly it wasnt bothering him that much. And if he had picked it up earlier, the fee would have been almost nothing. The shelter had to feed, bathe and medicate a cat for over a month, not to mention the microchip. 132$ is a bargain for all that. But the shelter is dumb for giving him the cat before he paid

why did the shelter give him the cat before he paid the fees? Seems you would do that first then he could have explained his health and money situation. But no way should the cat be killed just because he couldn't pay, especially since the shelter knew the cat has an owner

MR. Booth is in an extremely stressful condition ( assuming the medical portionis accurate ) and "ALL HE NEEDED" was to sit home and think about Mr. Gray taking a needle.

Not to justify what he did, but there's almost always two sides to the story.

He snapped.

a kid went in to the back of local shelter and took his pit because he didnt have the money to get it back. although the gentleman in this story could have asked for help to get the money before doing what he did, he also should make sure his cat is kept inside for safety, at least it wasnt hit by a car. most shelters run blood checks as soon as an animal comes in and if the pets are there for a few days they need to get the funds back that they spent caring for the animal. most run primarily on donations and fundraising.
