Barking Over Parking: Dog-Friendly Bus Thriving

Browse News

BOULDER, Colo. – Just a stone’s throw from downtown Boulder, the Colorado Chautauqua is a popular destination for stretching the legs -- all four of them, a trip recently made more accessible for dog owners and their pets thanks to a new pilot program.

The initiative offers residents, tourists and canines a free ride from downtown to the park, which was designated a historic landmark in 2006.

“A lot of people wanted to come to the park and take their dogs to open space, and they were forced to put the dogs in the car because they weren’t allowed on transit throughout the city,” said Boulder transportation planner Chris Jones.

Thus came the only free bus trip in town, attracting Liz Fliegelman and her Golden Labrador, “Tali,” who experienced her first bus ride.

“I thought it was wonderful,” Fliegelman said. “I was hoping there wouldn’t be a lot of other dogs on the bus. There wasn’t and it was really nice. It wasn’t too crowded so I didn’t have to worry about her getting under people’s feet.”

After first seeming unsure if she was allowed on the bus, Tali settled in like she belonged.

“It’s really nice to be able to take her here and not have to get in my car and drive, and deal with the parking here, which isn’t very easy,” Fliegelman said.

Fliegelman and Tali usually hike in Chautauqua a few times each week, and the bus service will enable them to do so even more often, she says.

“She loves it here, so it will be fun to just hop right on and we’ll use it a lot,” Fliegelman said.

The bus has been a big hit, Jones says.

“We’re averaging over 200 riders per day, so we’re beating the former route,” Jones said. “Our goal is 500 riders a day.”

The bus service benefits not only dog owners and their pets but also the neighborhood and environment, by reducing traffic and parking congestion. The dog-friendly trip operates from Noon to 10 p.m. daily, with pick-ups every 15 minutes throughout the route.

Already the program’s success is outweighing some initial rider concerns, Jones says.

“The negative feedback has been a kennel on wheels where there’s worries of dogs barking and leaving messages and fighting,” he said. “And in actuality, we have a few dogs a day and we haven’t had any problems.

“The drivers love it, the dogs love it and the guardians love it as well.”

The free bus program was modeled after long-running free rides offered in major cities like San Francisco, Seattle, Tacoma and even Paris, Jones says.

“I think it’s a nice option,” Fliegelman said. “Boulder is a very dog friendly city, so it fits in with the culture of boulder.”

What a great program! It helps in so many ways! Getting people and their dogs out to excercise easier, fewer cars on the road, less emmissions, less gas spent. It's win win all the way around!

It is great to see that something positive is being done about dogs and the city. Previously they didn't mix but now it seems a new revolution has begun. I think it is really sweet to see someone care so much about animals!

great idea. I wish we had a service like that where I live. My boys love to go for rides, but it's hard to drive with 3 by yourself.

More services like this will be needed. So many people don't want to leave their dog(s) at home anymore and want more places to take them along. Hopefully people will make sure their pets are well behaved before using these services so they are around for everyone to continue to use.

I think this is great. I hope this continues on. As for fears, most people who take advantage of the service have there dogs well socialized and there should not be problems to worry about.

What en excellent initiative- solving so many problems at once: difficult parking, increasing public transportation usage in the face of skyrocketing fuel costs, encouraging increased activity & exercise for all of the 2 or 4 legged varieties by making trips to the park more accessible, and increased socialization opportunities for people & their pets. Not one negative thing I can find. I hope the usage will ensure this programs continuation into the future!

Wow, they are so far ahead of us here in Atlanta. We can't even get our mass transit for people sorted out, much less add dog-friendly options.

What a great idea--with gas prices what they are, any way we can get cars off the road is a winner. I know my current dog would LOVE the ride as well as the outing in the park. I have had some in the past who would not have been such good riders! Hope the riders continue to be smart about who they use this for and that the idea catches on so that it will continue.

I haven't had to take public transporation for many, many years......and because I did--I wasn't too keen on it at any rate--HOWEVER--now that I am older and gas prices are so high and the environment is a concern for future generations.....I think this is a marvelous idea! I understand all the concerns--messes/fighting/etc.....but sound like things are under control. If dogs are conditioned to riding in their owners cars.....a bus ride should pose no problems. I hope it continues to be a success.

It improves the quality of life for the dogs/owners and saves gas so it is a good idea. I suspect that once there is a proven market for the service it will not be free.

I like this idea. It goes along w/ the going green & saving the planet, that's important. Anyone that is going to take their dog on the bus & out to hike more than likely has a well behaved & socialized dog to begin with. I would love to have this available in our area. I hope it catches on & is utilized as much as they hoped. Please pick up after your dogs & don't abuse this wonderful opportunity

I love it! What a fantastic idea to offer bus service to people and their dogs!
Do the owners have to pay fares, or is the bus entirely free?

THis is great, and I hope it catches on in the cities, with the price of gas and not everyone has a car more people can take their pets on outings and it would be a nice way of teaching dogs to socialize. Good for the animal bus!

A possible plus for pooch poo: Have "baggies" for owners, just in case someone can't wait! Sounds like a great idea to me and thanks to ZooToo for posting this positive, feel-good, healthy article!

They are getting about 200 riders per day and want to make it to 500 a day. Just curious if dogs are considered riders and counted in on that tally or not?

I think it's great that there's a free bus service that allows dogs. I only wish more dog owners would take advantage of this and get out there to walk their dogs at the park. The story made it sound like there were very few dogs coming along for the ride.

I read the same as you. I'm thinking this has recently been open to the 4 legged passenger but was initially for the 2 legged. Either way hope it catches on and people get their dogs out there for a "fun" day in the park.
