Barking Over Parking: Dog-Friendly Bus Thriving

Browse News

BOULDER, Colo. – Just a stone’s throw from downtown Boulder, the Colorado Chautauqua is a popular destination for stretching the legs -- all four of them, a trip recently made more accessible for dog owners and their pets thanks to a new pilot program.

The initiative offers residents, tourists and canines a free ride from downtown to the park, which was designated a historic landmark in 2006.

“A lot of people wanted to come to the park and take their dogs to open space, and they were forced to put the dogs in the car because they weren’t allowed on transit throughout the city,” said Boulder transportation planner Chris Jones.

Thus came the only free bus trip in town, attracting Liz Fliegelman and her Golden Labrador, “Tali,” who experienced her first bus ride.

“I thought it was wonderful,” Fliegelman said. “I was hoping there wouldn’t be a lot of other dogs on the bus. There wasn’t and it was really nice. It wasn’t too crowded so I didn’t have to worry about her getting under people’s feet.”

After first seeming unsure if she was allowed on the bus, Tali settled in like she belonged.

“It’s really nice to be able to take her here and not have to get in my car and drive, and deal with the parking here, which isn’t very easy,” Fliegelman said.

Fliegelman and Tali usually hike in Chautauqua a few times each week, and the bus service will enable them to do so even more often, she says.

“She loves it here, so it will be fun to just hop right on and we’ll use it a lot,” Fliegelman said.

The bus has been a big hit, Jones says.

“We’re averaging over 200 riders per day, so we’re beating the former route,” Jones said. “Our goal is 500 riders a day.”

The bus service benefits not only dog owners and their pets but also the neighborhood and environment, by reducing traffic and parking congestion. The dog-friendly trip operates from Noon to 10 p.m. daily, with pick-ups every 15 minutes throughout the route.

Already the program’s success is outweighing some initial rider concerns, Jones says.

“The negative feedback has been a kennel on wheels where there’s worries of dogs barking and leaving messages and fighting,” he said. “And in actuality, we have a few dogs a day and we haven’t had any problems.

“The drivers love it, the dogs love it and the guardians love it as well.”

The free bus program was modeled after long-running free rides offered in major cities like San Francisco, Seattle, Tacoma and even Paris, Jones says.

“I think it’s a nice option,” Fliegelman said. “Boulder is a very dog friendly city, so it fits in with the culture of boulder.”

what a fun idea--and if it's working good for them. I'm one of those people who puts the dogs in the car and just drives to a different neighborhood for a change pace in the daily walks so I would be all for this.

Sounds like a great idea so long as everyone behaves responsibly. But not for me; I don't even like cell phones around

Wonderful idea. Good for the dogs, good for their guardians--everyone gets some much needed exercise and the less traffic the less pollution. Wonder if this is now a permanent service.

Good idea. First ride for this dog, so I guess good it was not crowded. If there were many dogs, I would wonder how they all would get along in a crowded space like a bus.

My initial concern would be many dogs in a smallish space but, apparently, this is not a problem. Great program. Anything that gets more cars of the road or makes fewer trips is greatly appreciated.

This is a great idea! It is bringing the community together, sharing resources, eliminating stresses. Way to go. I wouldn't worry about the concerns that dogs will be leaving a mess, etc on the bus. Most owners that take the dogs in the cars don't have problems and you wouldn't be taking your pet somewhere if he didn't behave. This is wonderful and I hope that more cities adopt this program.

Very cool! I know that a lot of people have difficulties caring for their pets when they don't have a car, but if more cities had dedicated pet friendly public transportation it wouldn't be so much of an issue!

This is really great, and can actually help the homeless population as well. I have talked to some of the homeless here in Austin, and they are unable to take park in the public transit due to their dogs, and they are unable to leave their dogs behind for fear of their safety. Austin would really benefit from this program!

Love it! It is so frustrating being forced to drive everywhere b/c of the restrictions placed on pets. In Yosemite, they really promote using the shuttles to cut down on the damage done by car emissions but dogs aren't allowed. If you have a dog, you're likely hiking with him...

What a brilliant idea. Would love to see Savannah do this. Yes, the more we interact with our pets, a better society and the public in general would benefit from it.

The more people are allowed to have their dogs interact with society, riding buses, taking them to work, going to restaurants etc., the more those dogs become a true part of us. Leaving them home in a pen just opens the door to neglect and lack of attention. We praise any community that opens dog parks, bus rides and so on! It is inspiring to other dog owners to get more involved with their pet!

Great idea. We need to be able to take our pets on public transportation if they want us to conserve. Many of us take our pets to work. I would take the train if I could bring my dog.

I have experience with busses since I have lived in the country my whole life, but this is neat. Why shouldn't the dogs be allowed to ride the bus too?
