Emperor's Backyard Horses Cause Legal Drama

Browse News

TRENTON, N.J. -- The city of Trenton doesn't permit residents to keep horses on their property, but that hasn't stopped one horse-loving man.

The resident, who goes by the name of Emperor El Bey, has housed two horses in his backyard for several months.

El Bey says that he is a member of the Abannaki Aboriginal Nation of Murs, a sovereign American Indian tribe, and that he doesn't have to subscribe to the laws of New Jersey--or of the United States.

According to The Times of Trenton, El Bey's neighbors were bothered by the horses' odor and contacted Trenton' Department of Health.

Trenton has issued El Bey a 10-day warning, which expires today, to remove the horse from his property.

If El Bey does not comply, the issue might be taken up in courts.

Last year, other Trenton-based members of the Abannaki Aboriginal Nation were charged with marijuana possession and claimed diplomatic immunity. Government officials later found their diplomatic documents fraudulent.

For El Bey's neighbors, however, the potential legal issues involved in the case give way to sensual ones.

"It stinks. A lot," one neighbor told The Times of Trenton.

"I think it's not enough space for two horses," the neighbor's friend echoed.

In Hickman, Neb., three weeks ago, a different man, with a different horse, ran into similar legal issues.

A recently enacted livestock ban is forcing Harley Scott, 76, to relinquish his 32-year-old horse, Peter Rabbit by Sept. 15.

In an Aug. 19 Pet Pulse story, Scott expressed reluctance to move his elderly horse.

"He could drop dead today," he said. "I would prefer to have him remain as stable as he is and be able to enjoy his life. I like to go out and pet him ... I would be totally lost at the point where he disappears from the scene."

He should be aloud to keep horses in his back yard if he wants to. Ii's his propoerty, nnot thre governments. The government has no right . the governement should be arrested, and sued.

I think this man is just thumbing his nose at authority. Trenton, NJ is no place to keep a horse. Not only do the horses need enough room to roam a little, but a little yard is certainly no place to keep them. I read the article just today and hope that those horses were removed from that man's care.

A backyard is too small for a horse, especially two.

Completely addicted to horses myself, but don't think they should be in the back yard, not good for them or the neighbors.

i guess im warped but i like the smell of all to do with horses. a backyard is better than a stall and they are beautiful to look at. i can think of a lot worse things to have in the yard.he needs to move himself and the horses to a less uptight neighborhood.

While I don't think two horses should be kept in a backyard, I do get annoyed when cities change their zoning policies like this. It's sad that animals and pet owners have to suffer because of a city's growth...

I love horses enough the smell probably wouldn't concern me as long as he practiced good manure removal but it is unfair to the horses, they need more room.

Well so some of us think we're above the law? I think these horse need more room. He should move the horses and himself!

This is different than the other horse situation in NE. I think the horses should have more room if they were moved to a rural area.

Can't compare this to Peter's story at all if I understand it correctly. Peter was there before the law was passed and had lots of space. This guy sounds like he's got two horses crammed into a back yard and put them there after the law was enacted.

To me this is a totally different issue than the Peter Rabbit story, where I think that horse should have been grandfathered in. It sounds like this guy has brought horses into a place where pre-existing laws did not allow it.

Sounds like he has an ego problem...bad for horses. I read that he was in jail and owes thousands to three different women for child support among other legal issues. Hopefully these horses have found a good home.

I wonder what the outcome was? I hope that the horses are safe. Sounds like the guy cared about them but also didn't want to control the smell and their surroundings.

I have never heard of this sovereign tribe, but I'm not up to date on the latest legal Native American stuff anyway. It sounds like the horses may not have enough space, and Emperor feels that it's beneath him to scoop horse crap. Um, and this is a good situation for anyone how? Hopefully, Trenton AC can find a solution that protects the horses and keeps the city from getting sued.

It sounds like the horses at "Emperor's" house dont have enough space, and if he cant take care of them by doing the least thing he could, which is scooping horse poop, then he shouldnt be able to own them on his property. Also, the story about the 76 year-old man is very similar, but with his case he should be able to keep the horse because if he takes care of it, and its that old, putting the horse in a trailer could give it a heartattack and kill the poor old horse.

Must be nice to set up your own country and make your own rules. Also a pretty flagrant violation and probably not in the animals' best interests

This seems pretty fraudulent and I agree with the horses being removed. It's a shame that it's being compared with the guy in Nebraska and his horse Peter Rabbit.

So are the Abannaki Aboriginal Nation of Murs a fraud or were the docs handed over by the 2 other members just fraudulent? Whatever the case, the horses need more space.

Interesting - seems that they would understand that a horse needs room to run and move..... this isn't a healthy environment.

way to easy to claim to be part of a soverign indian tribe. Move the horses to a place that is better suited to their life.

Would love to get an update on how this all ended up--I looked but haven't seen one. As far at the old guy in Nebraska--leave him alone and don't let him replace the horse when his old one dies. The Trenton guy--of course let's get the horses in a proper environment. And uh....if I go the sovereign nation of "whatever his tribe is" I guess I don't have to follow any of THEIR rules? I could just do whatever??? If you live there, my friend, ya gotta follow the rules!

Good grief!!! He must be be cleaning up after them properly, which leads me to think that they are maybe lacking in other cares as well. They need room to run and be horses. Hope there is an amicable solution for the horses sake

Oh my! Even chickens cannot be kept in most cities. The elderly gentleman with his old horse should be left alone. I suppose in the other case the horses should be removed to a better environment for them. If the owner was on top of cleaning every day I doubt there would be a smell. If he is feeding them enough hay to make up for the small area they would probably be fine but it is against the law. City dwellers would not like a whole city full of farm animals.

I have no idea how large the backyard was but this isn't like the older man that had his horse forever and they wanted to take it away. This sound like a recent case. I love animals but in my housing area I don't think having horses next door was be acceptable.

It seems clear that these horses don't belong in someone's small backyard. I hope they find there way to a good home. The story of Peter Rabbit was different the horse had lived there for over 30 years and should be allowed to stay.

If the animal waste is recycled, everything possible to disrupt the flies, then why can they not still be considered transportation? In today's fuel crunch it makes since that more of us revert to a means we can afford, after all the feed prices comes with another story....all gasoline related. thanks oil companies and those paddin their pockets in the area of petroleum.
