Baby Home, Dog Seeks New Home after Crib-Snatching Incident

Baby Home, Dog Seeks New Home after Crib-Snatching Incident: An unusual tragedy has ended in a best case scenario -- a newborn, who was snatched from his crib and sustained critical injuries from the family's dog, will recover fully, while the dog will get a second chance.

NEW YORK -- Alexander James "AJ" Smith came home from the hospital on Sunday after recovering from injuries sustained on Monday, July 20, when the family dog carried the infant out of his crib and into the family's Nicholasville, Ky., backyard.

At the time of the incident, AJ was just 3-days-old, having arrived home from the hospital as a newborn on Sunday, July 19. The tragedy left AJ in critical care for about a week as he fought to heal from two collapsed lungs, a skull fracture, broken ribs and various cuts and bruises at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.

With AJ expected to make a full recovery, the Jessamine County Sheriffs department is still conducting its investigation, which should wrap up investigation within the next couple weeks, says Major Alan Peel, although it is unclear if criminal charges will be brought against the parents, Michael and Chrissie Smith.

Eds. Note: This article is one of four news stories happening right now in the world of pets and animals. Be sure to watch the Zootoo Pet News videocast above to stay current.

As for Dakota, the 4-year-old Native American Indian Dog, he remains under the care of Jessamine County Animal Control's SAVE Center where they are working to find him a forever home.

"We've had some nice offers from private homes," said Jenise Smith, the center's director.

"I'm really leaning toward a sanctuary but nothing has been decided yet. I just put everything on the table with Mr. Smith. At this point, he has not surrendered the dog to us. He could take the dog and place her wherever he likes."

Smith also told The Lexington Herald-Leader that the center is not taking any more applications.

"I think we all want the same thing. We just want what's best for her," Jenise Smith said.

The unusual incident happened on 1p.m. Monday, July 20, in the home of parents Michael and Chrissie Smith on Beaumont Road, in Nicholasville, Ky., a central, rural area of the state.

"It's unique by far. You think you've seen everything and then something new happens," Jessamine County Chief Deputy Major Allen Peel said in an interview with ZT Pet News previously.

Minutes after laying AJ down for a nap upstairs, the parents noticed both Dakota and baby were missing.

Michael Smith ran to the backyard, where Dakota had a history of taking things she had swiped from the house, as reported by The Associated Press.

The Jessamine County Sheriffs department reported Smith then chased the dog, which left the baby in the nearby woods 150 yards from the home.

"We do not know if the family had introduced the baby's scent before (arriving home on Sunday evening)," said Peel.

The 4-year-old Native American Indian Dog is one of three dogs the family has had for years. Dakota had never before shown signs of aggression to the family's two other children, and the incident has not be found to be a vicious attack, nor has she shown signs of aggression since July 20.

Jessamine Animal Control officer Earl Hatter called it "a freak accident" and something that was shocking and flabbergasting to the community, but cautioned that even a dog which wouldn't hurt a flea has to be watched carefully with young children.

"Often times when a baby cries, they don't understand why they are crying, but they want to fix it," Hatter told ZT Pet News previously. "So if you keep an eye on them then you can make sure there is correct interaction.

"Just like you would introduce another dog to another dog, but you want to keep that reinforcement, and never let them get into a situation where it crosses the line -- and if you keep a watchful eye, then you can correct it before something happens."

The parents should have kept better track of the baby and the dog.
If they had then that wouldn't have happened, now once again another dog is having to find another home.

I wonder if there is any chance that another dog started the baby snatch and this dog took it away from the first dog.... in a disagreement, those dogs could have injured the baby unintentionally. A newborn baby and pack of dogs just do not mix well.

i'm still wondering why they allowed the dog to have unsupervised access to the baby in the first place as well. i feel this situation could have been completely preventable, but at least the dog is being given a second chance and the baby is making a full recovery. hopefully they will be more careful with their child and their dogs in the future.

i am glad they are trying to find the dog a forever home. I can't stand to see cases like this where the dog is put down because of negligent parents. I am not saying it wasn't the dogs fault even though it doesn't seem like aggression. But whether the dog was being aggressive or trying to nurture the infant in its own way, no matter how good you think your dog is they should never be left alone with small children. That is a mistake purely on the part of the parents.

I'm glad the situations is turning out alright but for the whole time, all I can wonder is Why any of the dogs had free access to the baby in the first place. The first rule of kids and dogs is to keep them under supervision or under control. There should be baby gates in place to keep the dog from the babies room, for the babies safety And the dogs. This is just one example of where people make wrong choices.

I think it's also important to note that perhaps the dog acted out of jealousy. I think sometimes we love our pets so much that we treat them like babies instead of dogs/cats, etc. and they act because of this. My dog used to go through drama when someone visited with another dog. She would literally want no part of the dog and God forbid she saw me pet it or carry it. She would begin to vomit. Quite an award winner!!! But now she seems to be ok when there is a dog in our house. She won't share her toys but she's not completely unsociable either.

I'm glad the baby is ok. I think this situation brings to light the necessity for introducing your pet to a new child brought home from the hospital and also the need to keep close eye on the dog! I hope the dog finds a good home, too. I'm glad the owners didn't euthanize the dog.

Very good point on the 'introduction' of a baby to the pet. I don't have children (yet), but I'm wondering if that should not be something broached by all those prenatal and parenting classes often given at hospitals. So many people have pets at home, that it's a very relevant topic.

As a dog trainer, I try to convey to people and clients about the safety factors involved with children at any age and with dogs. That's why i am now doing a free training class on this subject. Dogs and kids should always be supervised! Dogs interpret us, our voices and our actions differently than we expect so that's another free seminar class I do- doggie communication. Parents have to be responsible. Now the poor dog in this article is blamed or being seen as a problem but the dog didn't know- noises trigger behaviors and some breeds react differently. From the article, I concur that the dog was not being viscious, wasn't trying to hurt the baby- the owners are the ones who made the mistake of leaving a baby with a dog. Boundaries for the dog have to be trained so they understand that the child is also a pack leader- not a toy. Maybe now they will learn from their mistakes. I just hope some great family takes the dog in to give the pup a good home. Remember everyone- exercise and train your dogs!

The dog, Dakota, should NOT be euthanized. It was a tragic accident. Dakota had a history of bringing stuffed animals and other things to dens he made on the family property. He is also 1/2 wolf. He was doing what nature told him to do. Dog's should NOT be bred with Wolves. He should not be punished for doing what came naturally to him.

This makes me so angry. The parents should have Euthanized the dog. They also should be facing charges for child endangerment. Please you can't spank your child but you can leave them alone in a room with a vicious dog. The dog was never safe. I blame the parents. I blame society for putting dogs above children. I think people are just sickening.

no you know whats sickening people like you! how can you be on this site when you obviously don't understand dogs! why should the dog be killed when the parents left the baby unattended? the dog was not vicious! it was acting, well, like a DOG! different dogs with different personalities react differently in different situations. if dogs could reason they would be people. if the dog meant to hurt the baby the baby would be dead.

I think most of the blame should be on the parents. You don't allow your dog to have access to a newborn that isn't even near you. If i had a house full of dogs i wouldn't leave the baby in the other room by itself. Hopfully the dog finds a good home.

I am glad both baby and dog will be OK. I hope the dog does not suffer any further due to this. Surely, if it had been one of their children who took they baby, they wouldn't give up on that child. What parent would leave a premature baby that had only been home 1 day where the dog could reach him? This worries me. One closed door and this all could have been prevented.

I am so happy that this little baby is going to be alright. I am also happy that Dakota is going to get a second chance in a new home. I still believe from my earlier post that parents should not always be 100% trusting with their pets around their children, especially babies. Don't leave them alone and keep your eyes open all the time, especially the ones on the back of your head. Don't ever take your pets for granted. It sounds like this story has a hopeful ending all the way around. I also hope the parents have learned something from all this.

So glad that the baby is OK! If I was the guardian of this dog, I'd be torn. I really don't think that the dog was trying to attack or be violent in any way, since he has a history of "stealing things". The baby was just something new for him to steal. But, I'm very glad that the dog is being given a 2nd chance!

Wow! How terrifying is that? I'm not so sure on the time line of a few minutes for all of this to happen. How did the dog get into the crib? It seems weird that the baby made no noise to alert anybody while the dog took it from the crib, down stairs, to the backyard and away from the house. No one heard a thing? I always used a baby monitor and closed the door when I put my baby to sleep. My animals haven't ever had an incident with children but I wouldn't chance it.

No one will ever know what prompted Dakota to snatch baby AJ. Hopefully the future holds only bright moments for the recovering child as well as for Dakota whether she finds a new family or is sent to a sanctuary. As for the parents, can't know for sure, but this was more likely a case of excitment at bringing the new baby home, dealing with the zeal of the other children and dogs, and just plain old fatigue rather than neglect.

I remember coming come from the hospital with my third child. Hope the baby has a full recovery and that the dog can soon be placed in a new home. It would of been best for them to have introduced the scent of the baby to the dog. Just as you do with any new animal you bring into your home. Maybe the dog was just carrying the baby off as it did other items from the home with no intent to harm. Closer supervision should of been shown(baby monitors, closed doors etc.)

But you do have to wonder how the dog got into the crib (was it on the floor?), got the baby all the way downstairs, outside (through an open door?) and 150 yards into the woods without anyone noticing. All in a few minutes as the family claims. Without any details, it sounds a lot like neglect. An investigation is warranted at least.

Doubtful...the dog could have killed the baby in a matter of seconds if that was the intent. It was probably just unfamiliar with the baby & was excited & taking it to his special place where he took all of his treasures. They did say he often took stuffed animals & toys to that place.

PS - I do not feel any charges should be filed against the parents of the baby, good Lord I am certain they did not intend for anything to happen, the baby came early and they simply were not fully prepared, lets hope calmer heads and hearts prevail, these parents have already been through enough.

I am very glad to hear that the baby will be ok. The parents' story still seems to be missing something though. How does a dog get a baby out of a crib and out of the house? How does a dog get out of a closed door? I do hope that the dog finds a loving home.

exactly.. he said he didn't want the dog back in the house so he needs to do the right thing and give the dog a chance elsewhere. The longer the dog is in the shelter the harder it will be to adjust in another home.

You're right. I hope he doesn't change his mind and have the dog put down. It would be good for him to get settled in a home without small children.

I was really suprised that he hadn't surrendered the dog either. I certainly hope he allows it to go to a new home!

This really does sound like the best case scenario. I'm sure it must be heartbreaking to have to give up the dog, but at least she has a chance at a new home.

I am so happy to hear that AJ is going to make a full recovery. It is sad that it had to come to the dog being forced into a new home. I am thankful, however, that he is getting a second chance.

I'm glad the baby is going to be ok too....and also, glad that they will be giving a second chance to their dog....I wonder if they will make "no kids" or no little kids are part of the adoption or if they think it was simply a one time incident...
