Australia to Ban Pet Sales in Stores

Browse News

A bill was introduced to Australia's state government this week that seeks to outlaw cat and dog sales in pet stores.

The legislation was written by New South Wales Member of Parliament (NSW MP) Clover Moore. She cited data indicating that such sales directly contribute to the euthanization problem in Australia.

Pet stores, she says, are at the source of the issue because people make impulse pet purchases. Later, she says, unanticipated responsibilities force owners to surrender their animals.

Should the bill pass, Moore hopes it will spur more responsible breeding. She expects the measure will greatly reduce the demand for puppy mills – where animals are forced to breed until they can no longer do so.

The bill is supported by groups like the Humane Society, the Royal Society for the Protection of Animals and Animal Liberation.

Under the law, stores would still be allowed to sell pet care products. But the animals could only come from registered breeders and shelters.

Here in the U.S., no such measures exist.

Roughly one pet for every 30 Americans is euthanized each year – compared to about one in 100 down under. Those stats are based on info from DogsAcrossAustralia.com, the ASPCA and census data.

(Australia's population is 15 times smaller than that of the U.S. But 50 times as many pets are euthanized here annually.)

Some food for thought - according to Moore, her country has the highest rate of pet ownership in the world.

How would such a measure affect the 10 million pets euthanized in the United States each year? Tell us what you think under this story.

I agree that pet stores encourage impulse buying. Babies are so hard to resist. I especially like the part about pet stores only buying from REGISTERED breeders. I KNOW that is not the way it is here in GA.

America should consider doing this and with it stronger spay/neuter laws and continued efforts to educate the pet-buying public to realize that adoption is the only option.

This would be a great policy for the US to adopt. Better for shelters and rescues to get their animals adopted and less puppy mills to provide puppies to be sold at the pet stores.

Seems good in theory, but sometimes when things are banned there becomes an underground more sinister type of way around it.

Why can't we do this? It seems like such a simple solution. I don't care that a lot of stores would go out of business.

While I would love to see something like this passed in the US, I don't know how easy it would be to enforce. I could see some sort of freaky blackmarket puppy and kitten store thing going on...of course, people would still be able to get pets; they'd just have to face the scrutiny of breeders or shelters/rescue groups to do so. It might even cause a boom of BYBs that will hand over a puppy to anyone who can pay.

Lordy how I would love to see a law like this passed in the US. I am so tired of seeing puppy mill puppies being sold for thousands of dollars while puppies at a shelter near by are being put down left and right.

I think this is absolutely wonderful news. Between this and the fact that declawing is illegal in many other countries, I really wish the US would step up and realize that they need to follow the act of these countries who are leading the way in making lives good for our domesticated animal friends.

Wouldn't it be nice to see these stores representing shelters and rescues. The pets could be showcased for the day and brought back to the shelter for room and care. If someone was interested in adopting, they could go to the shelter and become informed instead of impulse buying. Sometimes, impulse is great but I wonder how many impulse buys end up in the shelter or on the street.

Absolutely, pet stores should be required to get their animals from the pound and from shelters if they want to sell animals in their stores, that way they are not contributing to the overpopulation problem, but helping solve it, and at the same time helping shut down the puppy mills....unfortunately we will never see this happen due to the greed of the profit mongers who run these stores, they don't really care about the animals, all they care about is money.

This is probably one of the most responsible actions taken and the most needed. Just look at the comparison again between Australia and the U.S. on the number of pets put down. I don't see a down side to this law. It will provide legislation to control breeding ( thus healthier animals) and make those wanting to adopt a pet go to a reputable source. Further, having limited numbers of sources would make patroling the industry easier to watch for potential abuse of the system.

This is Terrific because you see people on the news with like 500 dogs and 200 cats that they can't take care of. And they pets are the ones who suffer because the owner thinks they can care for them and in reality they simply can not do it.

It's good to restrict how many animals can be bought because if the kill rate is high why should we let more and more die for no reason.
