Australia to Ban Pet Sales in Stores

Browse News

A bill was introduced to Australia's state government this week that seeks to outlaw cat and dog sales in pet stores.

The legislation was written by New South Wales Member of Parliament (NSW MP) Clover Moore. She cited data indicating that such sales directly contribute to the euthanization problem in Australia.

Pet stores, she says, are at the source of the issue because people make impulse pet purchases. Later, she says, unanticipated responsibilities force owners to surrender their animals.

Should the bill pass, Moore hopes it will spur more responsible breeding. She expects the measure will greatly reduce the demand for puppy mills – where animals are forced to breed until they can no longer do so.

The bill is supported by groups like the Humane Society, the Royal Society for the Protection of Animals and Animal Liberation.

Under the law, stores would still be allowed to sell pet care products. But the animals could only come from registered breeders and shelters.

Here in the U.S., no such measures exist.

Roughly one pet for every 30 Americans is euthanized each year – compared to about one in 100 down under. Those stats are based on info fromDogsAcrossAustralia.com, the ASPCA and census data.

(Australia's population is 15 times smaller than that of the U.S. But 50 times as many pets are euthanized here annually.)

Some food for thought - according to Moore, her country has the highest rate of pet ownership in the world.

How would such a measure affect the 10 million pets euthanized in the United States each year? Tell us what you think under this story.

I think this is a good idea. The conditions are usually pretty lousy for animals in pet stores.

I live in NSW and was unaware of this!!!

This is probably one of the most responsible actions taken and the most needed. Just look at the comparison again between Australia and the U.S. on the number of pets put down. I don't see a down side to this law. It will provide legislation to control breeding ( thus healthier animals) and make those wanting to adopt a pet go to a reputable source. Further, having limited numbers of sources would make patroling the industry easier to watch for potential abuse of the system.

This is Terrific because you see people on the news with like 500 dogs and 200 cats that they can't take care of. And they pets are the ones who suffer because the owner thinks they can care for them and in reality they simply can not do it.

It's good to restrict how many animals can be bought because if the kill rate is high why should we let more and more die for no reason.

This is a good idea to restrict people from buying crazy amounts of animals and then not taking care of them.

i think this is a good idea because this will restrict people for buying animals they can not afford to take care of, and for overpopulation.

Wow! This is the kind of law that I would love to see passed in the USA. Not only would it help to curb impulse buying (that puppy in the window syndrome), but it would also curtail puppy mills!! I hope the law passes!!!

I find that interesting that if the Australian population is 15 times less than that of the United States and Australia has the highest rate of pet ownership in the world, is that really safe to have all those animals in such a small country?

Many pet stores offer adoptions instead of sales of pets. That is a much better option. Also, if people have a waiting period required by the adoption agengies maybe that would help with impulse adoptions as well.

I agree. I hope the bill passes and the US follows suit. That, combined with some mandated sterilization laws will hopefully start to ease the floods of animals brought annually to American shelters.

Obviously much needed if they are euthanizing 50 times more pets than the US. This legislation is neceassry and other countries should pay heed.

The US should pay attention to this. Too many puppies and kittens are impulse buys that are then dumped into shelters when they are no longer little and cute, or the families realize how much effort really goes into owning a pet. This type of law would help to alleviate the overpopulation that results in the tragic decision to euthanize so many wonderful animals.

We should do what Australia is doing but even more so---ban the sale of ALL live creatures from pet stores! Rabbits, hamsters, gerbils, mice, rats, snakes, etc. are all just as subject as cats and dogs to mill type breeding, are also bought on impulse and not properly cared for, then "set free" to starve or be killed, or dumped at shelters.
