Atlanta Woman Accused of Killing Puppies

Atlanta – A 20 year-old University of Georgia student faces felony charges in the beating death of 7 puppies.

Officials said the 6 to 8 week-old dogs were found dead in a box behind a local Ellenwood convenience store.

Ashley Council allegedly called Athens-Clarke County Animal Control the morning of September 8th to ask if she could surrender 7 puppies – and the rep. she spoke with told her they would take the dogs.

But just hours later, the bruised and bloodied corpses of dogs matching the description from the call were found. The UGA sophomore's name and address were on the box containing the bodies.

In an interview Tuesday with The Red and Black newspaper, Council said “Whatever happened was unintentional...this isn't something I'd ever do.“

The UGA student does part-time clerical work at the University's Veterinary Teaching Hospital – but school representatives say she has no contact with animals.

Council's been suspended from her position pending an investigation. She also faces up to 5 years in prison and $15,000 dollars in fines per felony account.

According to animal control officials, she owns three other dogs, one of which was adopted from an Athens-Clarke County shelter. That dog was spayed and is not related to the puppies.

I hope she has a good explanation. Why would she call about bringing in the pups if she was going to harm them? I hope they can find out the truth.

Well their is no real proof, but if she is guilty then I wonder how she sleeps at night. People like that make me sick. If she is found guilty then she should get triple the fine and up to life in prision. You know why? Because its murder. Its the murder of baby dogs. I beleive that $15k and a few monthes in prison is far to lenent.

Sounds like she just abandoned the pups and someone else did the deed. It would be interesting to know all the details (which the paper doesn't know). She certainly has a lot of explaining to do.

good i hope she does get sent to prison, i feel that punishment for these kinds of things is way to lax it needs to me much harsher. she deserves for someone to beat her to death like she did those poor little puppies

How horrible........I hope whoever is responsible, this girl or another individual, is brought to justice. This was a sick, twisted thing to do and they need to be punished.

Something sounds really fishy here.

She calls to surrender them, and then she beats them horribly to death?
Who in their right mind...?

This story is so sad.
Especially puppies, who had their whole lives ahead of them.

im glad this girl is getting jail time she sure does need it.... i work at an spca and so far out of the cuelty cases i see and even hear about all the ppl get is ticketed.... but this is far more worse and she needs that fine and jail time... not like them puppies did anything and i hope that more people who kill animals get caught and jail time too!!!

i don't beleive this. if the animal shelter said that they would take the puppies than why would'nt she just take them there. brings to someones mind that the only reason that this is done is because there is no where to take the animals. this does not justify by no means and i beleive that someone should be legaly responsible for this and get some kind of punishment for this.it is cruel and should be investigated.

"Whatever happened"??? There's a box full of bludgeoned puppies, I think it's clear WHAT happened, let's find out "who" did it and prosecute. The little evidence produced is looking very incriminating toward this woman.

While I think more infromation is needed about the beating of the puppies anyone who dumps puppies especially when there is a shelter willing to take them should be charged with cruelty as well. There is no explanation for what the beating and killing of puppies and even if she did not do it herself but someone who found the puppies where she left them did, she should be charged.

I like to see the stories advertised. I've noticed an increase in coverage since the Vicks case. Makes the public more aware. I'd also like to see the follow-up: what happened after the arrest- so the public gets to see how lightly most of these offenders are treated.
She faces 5 years in prison, but if this is her first offense, she probably won't serve any time.
The public also needs to see the connection between violence towards animals and violence towards humans, that animal abusers are often just practicing until they move onto humans or substituting animals temporarily until they have to seek human victims.

There are several resources that the public has to provide and care for stray or unwanted pets and she should have utilized them instead of killing the puppies.

What a shame. I am sure if she had turned them in they would have found homes. This is another good example of where spay/neuter would have been the best choice

OK i just want to know if she has a box big enough to put whomever did that to the puppies in? & i bet whomever did it gets a fine & minimal jail time becuase it wasnt 7 people or kids... SAD

Definately a strange situation, why call to surrender the puppies then kill them and leave the evidence in a box with your information. Obviously not the most intelligent person.

This seems kind of sketchy...I'm not sure what to think. I find it kind of hard to believe that somebody would call to have the dogs turned in, and after knowing that the shelter would take them, just kill the puppies. The only reason I could maybe...maybe see her doing it, is if somebody she knew told her that they were going to charge for surrendering them and she didn't feel like calling to see whether it was true or not. All I know is since they were her puppies, if they don't find out who did it or she doesn't tell them who did it, if she knows, then she should get charged for the crime. She should also be not allowed to own an animal plain and simple.

She will get a slap on the wrist and banned from school, society doesnt think this is up there with "true crimes". She will see no jail time, and if she does it will end up being on probation.

Send her to jail and let her think about what she did and why it was wrong. People who do this to animals will eventually move one to abusing/killing people.

Unintentional is leaving your car lights on, beating of animals is no accident. Beat the person just as they beat the poor defenseless animal...i have no mercy or take no prisoners with these scumbags.

My first reaction was GUILTY, but then when I thought about it, it doesn't make sense to kill the puppies if they said they would take them. Plus she would have to be pretty stupid to put them in a box with her name and address on it. I'm on the fence on this one.

Why in the world would you commit a horrible crime and leave the evidence every where? It doesn't make sense that she would kill a bunch of puppies and leave her name and address in the box. She must have been framed. What does she mean, "whatever happened was unintentional"? How do you unintentionally beat puppies to death??

Like some others have commented, there is not enough here to know if she is the one who did this. Why would her name be on the box? Sounds like a set up to me. I hope there is a thorough investigation of this sad story so the guilty person can be rightfully punished. It's sad and sick that someone is capable of this.

Remember that the media tends to put a spin on things for better coverage. What's the real truth? I agree that this sound fishy... She calls to surrender them, then kills them. doesn't make sense at all.
If she did do it, maximum sentence for this disgusting, dispicable act.
