Atlanta Woman Accused of Killing Puppies

Atlanta – A 20 year-old University of Georgia student faces felony charges in the beating death of 7 puppies.

Officials said the 6 to 8 week-old dogs were found dead in a box behind a local Ellenwood convenience store.

Ashley Council allegedly called Athens-Clarke County Animal Control the morning of September 8th to ask if she could surrender 7 puppies – and the rep. she spoke with told her they would take the dogs.

But just hours later, the bruised and bloodied corpses of dogs matching the description from the call were found. The UGA sophomore's name and address were on the box containing the bodies.

In an interview Tuesday with The Red and Black newspaper, Council said “Whatever happened was unintentional...this isn't something I'd ever do.“

The UGA student does part-time clerical work at the University's Veterinary Teaching Hospital – but school representatives say she has no contact with animals.

Council's been suspended from her position pending an investigation. She also faces up to 5 years in prison and $15,000 dollars in fines per felony account.

According to animal control officials, she owns three other dogs, one of which was adopted from an Athens-Clarke County shelter. That dog was spayed and is not related to the puppies.

Pardon my bluntness... there are other more effective ways to kill puppies. Beating an animal to death seems to indicate rage of some kind. Also, disposal is relatively easy, why leave them in a box with her address wehre they could be found? I never understand animal abuse, but this is just doesn't seem "right".

She should never be allowed to have contact with animals ever again as long as she lives. Should go to jail for longer than 5 years and I hope she has $1500.00 per offens. It's never about the money but it should go to the shelter. Why not just give the dogs to a good home, the shelter would have taken them I just don't understand.

Very weird, who calls a shelter describing the animals and then drops them off in such a condition? Seems like she may be a little touched in the head and should still be punished severely for her actions.

I honestly hope they throw her in jail for a VERY long time. And how stupid can you be to first call a shelter and inform them of 7 puppies and then leave the DEAD PUPPIES in a box with your name on them. WHat an idiot!!

It is possible that this person intended to surrender the puppies and then was irresponsible with their treatment. Perhaps she left them outside in a box and someone else got to them. Either way.. she is responsible for neglect and abuse.

That's disgusting. If she did in fact kill them and then turn them in, why not just turn them in. She obviously has some severe mental issues. It's absolutely sickening.

This woman has some severe head problems and all of her animals should be taken away, she should never be allowed a job at a vets and should do some major prison time. If you can do that to 7 baby pups, what on earth will you do to your kid someday? Scary.
And if it was someone else that did it, than why didn't she say that instead of that is was "unintentional." Whatever.

It is suspicious that she called to turn in the puppies and then killed them. But whatever happened, until the police find out whether or not she's the perpetrator, her other dogs need to be taken from her.

What a horrible person. I hope she has to pay the maximum fine and gets prison time as well. They should definately take her other animals and forbid her from owning any others in the future. Vet school? you've got to be kidding!

If this woman did commit this horrendous crime then she should have a lot more then just five years in prison. There is people that shop lift and they get a worse punishment then that.

If she did it, throw the book at her. Officials do need a little more information though. It doesn't make sense why she would do such a horrible thing knowing that the shelter would take them in (thus, the need for further investigation). If in fact she did this, she has some serious mental problems and should do jail time for it.

Sounds to me like something is missing, too. Not excusing the inhumane treatment of the puppies, but it would be my guess that the shelter declined to take them.

That is so sad. Kinda of a strange story. Would she really call to have then surrendered and then kills them? They said they would take them.

FIRST I hope they punish her to the fullest extent.
SECONDI hope they remove her animals from her and the local animal shelters keep her name on file as a DO NOT ADOPT
THIRD if she does not get jail time remove her from her 'clerical' position at the vet
Fourth can we take HER right away to have children?????

What was wrong with her? She called in to report giving them to the shelter then beats them. I don't know, I think she's trying to cover something and was maybe too stupid not to put them in a box that had her name and address. I've heard of someone doing something even more stupid. To beat little puppies though...that's horrible. Why are people getting more and more violent with animals? Animals have never done anything to deserve it. Especially harmless puppies.

There is absolutely no excuse. People like that should have the same treatment done to them. How could anyone in their right mind do such a thing? I hope they throw her in jail for the maximum sentence.

I think part of this story must be missing, she says whatever happened was unintentional, but it sounds as though the puppies were beaten?? How can that be unintentional. It doesnt' make sense that she would make the call to surrender them, and then kill them. I hope there is a follow up to this story, and if it turns out she did this horrific act, she should get the max time and fine!!

DISGUSTING!!! Whether or not she did it, someone is responsible for this and needs to be held accountable. If it was not her, she obviously has information on who had the puppies last and could give information on what happened to them.
