Connecticut - The American Pet Products Manufacturer’s Association released its yearly Pet Owners Survey this week.

The results may be surprising. Topping the list for most common pet is freshwater fish. Americans own 142 million of them.

Coming in second are cats at 88.3 million followed by dogs at 74.8 million.

The remainder of the pet population is as follows:

24.3 million small animals

16 million birds

13.8 million horses

13.4 million reptiles

9.6 million salt***er fish

The survey found that pet ownership is higher than it’s ever been. The total number is ...drum roll please - 71.1 million households have at least one pet.

That number is up more than 60% from the first survey – which was conducted in 1988 and reported only 51 million households caring for pets.
