Animals Help Teach Kids to Read

Browse News

NATION – When it comes to learning to read, experts say practice makes perfect. But what if you're a shy six-year-old or an anxious second grader? For kids like that, reading to an animal may be a better option.

Groups dedicated to pairing animals with kids are springing up across the nation. Usually, horses and dogs are chosen to listen quietly as literary youth fumble through books like “Sam I Am” and “The Giving Tree.”

So why are animals good listeners? Teachers and animal experts agree – animals don't judge, they don't interrupt to correct mispronounced words, they just listen.

For a learning child, freedom to miss a word now and then and feel ok about it can increase confidence.

Prior to becoming teachers, the helpful hounds and horses undergo screening similar to that of therapy animals - to ensure their temperaments are right for the job.

One Baltimore group called Karma Dogs only uses rescued canines in their organization.

The Black Stallion Literacy Project serves Miami-Dade schools, but with horses instead of dogs. Its founder said he once witnessed a horse nudge a small Haitian girl who spoke little English and seemed nervous about reading. But she thought the horse was telling her to begin, and just like that she started reading.

As far as getting certified goes, it's a fairly simple process of testing the animal around mildly chaotic situations. Some dogs do need additional training. You may need to pay a nominal fee for that service.

This is a wonderful idea. When my daughter was learning how to read she would read to dolls and stuffed animals. This is along the same lines but for a child it would be so much more fun for the student.

It's COMPLETELY OFFICIAL NOW ... ANIMALS ARE AMAZING! Is there anything they aren't helpful with???? NOPE!!!

I just still remain baffled by humans who don't respect them and treat them well.

That is a TERIFFIC idea. There are probably thousands of kids who will benifit from this new style of learning. I think my dog should sign up for that. He would be a great listener, he loves a good book!

Thinking a little more on this...not only does reading to pets help the children learn to read, it also helps them to learn to care for pets.

Animals have endless possibilities in the way that they can help and teach humans. I can't believe the way some humans treat them in return. This is a great story!!

I always practice my presentations and speeches in front of my cats. I think cats would be good for these programs as well. Everyone benefits from the unconditional love and acceptance of these animals regardless of the situation!

I know as a child I was very shy, it really was a comfort to me that I always had a cat and/or a dog while growing up; I always had someone to talk to when I felt like I couldn't talk to anyone else.

I think this is a very good idea. Some kids are very shy, and its a lot easier to read to a cute doggy instead of an adult, who can be intimidating

My cousin was in first grade and unable and unwilling to read when took in a 2 day old pup (the big ol' girl on my profile) to bottle feed her. She didn't want the "baby" to have to go to bed without a story after feedings and began reading her books. I thinks some kids just don't feel embarrased when reading with dogs because dogs don't correct them when they mess up.

I think that this is a FANTASTIC idea. It develops better reading skills for kids and if they can't pronounce a word then they won't interrupt them to correct the kid.

This sounds like a good idea even tho I have never heard of it. However, the children still need the teacher's supervision to be sure the words are correctly pronounced and spelled out.

I am a teacher in a school district that doesn't allow animals at school due to allergies in some students. Fish are allowed. I guess you can also read to fish!
I guess this idea works anywhere outside of a school that doesn't allow class pets. If you can get a child to read to the family cat or dog, or hamster or fish, the idea can be successful in any situation.

I have seen this program in action, and the proud children and the grateful parents. The bond between the child and dog is inspiring. And the volunteer handlers reap as much as they sow and love it. Educators seek it out. If you are in the Pittsburgh, PA area, chech with Animal Friends. They conduct this program.

My daughter used to sit and read to her rat when she was learning. I wish I had photos of it! That rat would sit at the bottom of the book and look at the pictures (and nibble a bit of course!) She was the best little animal. Sadly we lost her.

Reading is a difficult skill to master, and for kids who may have low self-esteem to begin with it can be a daunting task just to get them started reading. I think it's awesome to hear that people are making use of the non-judgmental attitudes of animals to help encourage children to read! And kudos to Karma Dogs for using rescue dogs for the program. It's so important to make people see how much value and worth animals have.

Excellent news story. Any situation that portrays animals in a caring, giving light helps the non believers realize their worth. We need lots more publicity like this for the general public that still think of animals as "property".

they used to tell us to read to our pets when i was a little kid, for the same reason. it can be difficult to get animals allowed to come into school, but it's good for those kids who don't have a pet to read to at home.
