Animals Help Teach Kids to Read

Browse News

NATION – When it comes to learning to read, experts say practice makes perfect. But what if you're a shy six-year-old or an anxious second grader? For kids like that, reading to an animal may be a better option.

Groups dedicated to pairing animals with kids are springing up across the nation. Usually, horses and dogs are chosen to listen quietly as literary youth fumble through books like “Sam I Am” and “The Giving Tree.”

So why are animals good listeners? Teachers and animal experts agree – animals don't judge, they don't interrupt to correct mispronounced words, they just listen.

For a learning child, freedom to miss a word now and then and feel ok about it can increase confidence.

Prior to becoming teachers, the helpful hounds and horses undergo screening similar to that of therapy animals - to ensure their temperaments are right for the job.

One Baltimore group called Karma Dogs only uses rescued canines in their organization.

The Black Stallion Literacy Project serves Miami-Dade schools, but with horses instead of dogs. Its founder said he once witnessed a horse nudge a small Haitian girl who spoke little English and seemed nervous about reading. But she thought the horse was telling her to begin, and just like that she started reading.

As far as getting certified goes, it's a fairly simple process of testing the animal around mildly chaotic situations. Some dogs do need additional training. You may need to pay a nominal fee for that service.

The fact that animals dont judge is great for the kids moral. It lets them learn without really knowing that they are learning.

I believe animals and kids are so much alike. Kids and animals are just so honest in the way they listen. And animals just "know" they just have the feeling that there is something about the kid and vice versa about the animals.

This is such a neat idea. In addition to helping children learn to read it may teach them to respect animals in general. I'd love to see more of this.

Another aide in animals helping people to read might be Koko the Gorilla. Koko uses sign language to communicate with humans.

animals & children are closer to nature than we adults... they can easily communicate with one another and help ease any tension. Relaxing helps learning

What a good way to utilize shelter dogs. Could a cat do the same thing. The more we find ways for animal to help the more we save.

sounds like a great program. The more chances we give animals, the more good they can do. Animals don't do things for fame or fortune. All they want is love.

This is great. When I was a child, I used to read to my Golden Retreiver all the time. Now, as an adult, I often read to my horse- she enjoys the company and a good story. I think it strengthens the bond between people and pets. Some might say I'm crazy, but I even talk to my pets like they're people. It helps with the human think process. I tell them my problems, and somehow, they help me solve them.

I'm positive the animals enjoy it as much as it helps the kids. I talk to my cat all the time and often he will respond! Now if he hears me on the phone, he comes running to hug me. Even my aunts pig likes to be talked to. When I'm measuring out his food I talk to him and count out loud. He wags his tail until I stop talking and even grunts a little while I talk.

This is a great idea because it still lets the children read, but in a situation that may feel a little less stressful for them. Plus, I'm sure that the animals don't mind the attention either!

it works both ways. One of the best way to calm a nervous animal is to just sit near it and read.

Reading is good for everyone!

This is a great idea. When I was a kid, I was very shy. I would never be able to read in front of anybody ---even my parents, but I would sit for hours and talk and read out loud to my cat.

i think animals are great for things such as this. :) they never judge anyone, and i think thats what makes kids learn because they know an animal will never judge on their ability to learn.
