Animals Help Teach Kids to Read

Browse News

NATION – When it comes to learning to read, experts say practice makes perfect. But what if you're a shy six-year-old or an anxious second grader? For kids like that, reading to an animal may be a better option.

Groups dedicated to pairing animals with kids are springing up across the nation. Usually, horses and dogs are chosen to listen quietly as literary youth fumble through books like “Sam I Am” and “The Giving Tree.”

So why are animals good listeners? Teachers and animal experts agree – animals don't judge, they don't interrupt to correct mispronounced words, they just listen.

For a learning child, freedom to miss a word now and then and feel ok about it can increase confidence.

Prior to becoming teachers, the helpful hounds and horses undergo screening similar to that of therapy animals - to ensure their temperaments are right for the job.

One Baltimore group called Karma Dogs only uses rescued canines in their organization.

The Black Stallion Literacy Project serves Miami-Dade schools, but with horses instead of dogs. Its founder said he once witnessed a horse nudge a small Haitian girl who spoke little English and seemed nervous about reading. But she thought the horse was telling her to begin, and just like that she started reading.

As far as getting certified goes, it's a fairly simple process of testing the animal around mildly chaotic situations. Some dogs do need additional training. You may need to pay a nominal fee for that service.

Very cool. It takes time to build these programs and the main thing is to just do them. These days you need to becareful with the laws and the protection of child - animal relationship ....if the animals accidentally bites a child. You would need a few legalities because each state is different. I am truly for this too. Just humans are humans!

I think our local shelter provides a similar program where kids can come and read to the animals. If not, seems like a great idea for both.

My elementary school had a program that paired advanced reading 4th and 5th graders with younger members of the school community that were having trouble reading. They felt reading with an older student would be less intimidating than an adult, and they wouldn't have to feel embarrassed in front of their peers. This is even better! Almost all children love animals and it completely eliminates the pressure to be right!

Another example of how a dog's unconditional, nonjudgemental love can accomplish small miracles. I like that rescued dogs are being used for the program.

One of my therapy dog volunteers is also involved in a project like this in St. Louis. Kids who are afraid to read out loud to peers for fear of "getting it wrong" often loose those inhibitions reading to a dog. And the handler helps them along. Its a great program!

Great idea! I know I talk to my pets a lot and they always appreciate it. What animal wouldn't want a kid to read to him/her.

Great comment. Yes, animals do seem to understand much of what we say. Both the animals and the children involved will benefit a lot.

As a retired teacher, I say "HOORAY" for animals.
A child who is reticent to read allowed in front of his/her peers, feels comfortable with an animal and is willing to take the risk because the animal doesn't care if the child isn't perfect and the child knows that!

According to a report I saw here in AZ this program is especially beneficial for middle school students. They are able to bring their reading levels up to 8th grade in a few months, without having to worry about making mistakes while reading.
