Animals Help Teach Kids to Read

Browse News

NATION – When it comes to learning to read, experts say practice makes perfect. But what if you're a shy six-year-old or an anxious second grader? For kids like that, reading to an animal may be a better option.

Groups dedicated to pairing animals with kids are springing up across the nation. Usually, horses and dogs are chosen to listen quietly as literary youth fumble through books like “Sam I Am” and “The Giving Tree.”

So why are animals good listeners? Teachers and animal experts agree – animals don't judge, they don't interrupt to correct mispronounced words, they just listen.

For a learning child, freedom to miss a word now and then and feel ok about it can increase confidence.

Prior to becoming teachers, the helpful hounds and horses undergo screening similar to that of therapy animals - to ensure their temperaments are right for the job.

One Baltimore group called Karma Dogs only uses rescued canines in their organization.

The Black Stallion Literacy Project serves Miami-Dade schools, but with horses instead of dogs. Its founder said he once witnessed a horse nudge a small Haitian girl who spoke little English and seemed nervous about reading. But she thought the horse was telling her to begin, and just like that she started reading.

As far as getting certified goes, it's a fairly simple process of testing the animal around mildly chaotic situations. Some dogs do need additional training. You may need to pay a nominal fee for that service.

This is a great idea and it sounds like it is working well. There are so many interactions between humans and animals that are so meaningful.

Interesting program. I'm glad to hear it's effective. I hope it also encourages children to appreciate, love and respect animals at a young age.

I hope a byproduct is that these kids are also learning what humane treatment of animals is all about.

I am for anything that gets kids to read more. What a wonderful partnership. I hope the kids develop the confidence to read to their peers.

Very good story, but unfortunately kids can be mean, at least these kids have someone to read to that helps build their confidence without being judged or made fun of.

This is just another example of how animals enrich and help us. Many children are shy and unsure of themselves, and need an uncritical audience to play to. I think this is a great idea.

I second that notion. Animals provide only unconditional love. They are the perfect audience to work with if your just not sure of yourself. Excellent confidence builders.

I'm a little surprised they use horses for this because of how large the animal is. Do they bring the horses into the classroom or what? Maybe they use miniature horses.

I can see where it would boost their confidence. But how are they going to learn proper pronunciation without correction?

Interesting. I don't know how that would actually help them learn how to read. It may get them started and decrease anxiety but I don't see how it would help learning disabled children.

The concept of animals sitting listening (thus encouraging) children to read makes perfect sense. Animals have been well documented in bringing joy and succor and peace to folks in nursing homes, hospitals and even jails. If they can help the shy or anxious child to read, let's go for it!

I brought my English Pointer, Jake, to my school library for years, to have the students read to him. He loved his job, and the students loved him. Their reading improved, and as a side benefit, those students that had been afraid of dogs, lost their fear.

I think pairing animals with children to help develop their reading skills is a wonderful idea. I know how much better I feel at home with my dogs because as it was stated animals never judge they just listen! Hopefully this idea will spread aross our great nation.
