Animals Help Teach Kids to Read

Browse News

NATION – When it comes to learning to read, experts say practice makes perfect. But what if you're a shy six-year-old or an anxious second grader? For kids like that, reading to an animal may be a better option.

Groups dedicated to pairing animals with kids are springing up across the nation. Usually, horses and dogs are chosen to listen quietly as literary youth fumble through books like “Sam I Am” and “The Giving Tree.”

So why are animals good listeners? Teachers and animal experts agree – animals don't judge, they don't interrupt to correct mispronounced words, they just listen.

For a learning child, freedom to miss a word now and then and feel ok about it can increase confidence.

Prior to becoming teachers, the helpful hounds and horses undergo screening similar to that of therapy animals - to ensure their temperaments are right for the job.

One Baltimore group called Karma Dogs only uses rescued canines in their organization.

The Black Stallion Literacy Project serves Miami-Dade schools, but with horses instead of dogs. Its founder said he once witnessed a horse nudge a small Haitian girl who spoke little English and seemed nervous about reading. But she thought the horse was telling her to begin, and just like that she started reading.

As far as getting certified goes, it's a fairly simple process of testing the animal around mildly chaotic situations. Some dogs do need additional training. You may need to pay a nominal fee for that service.

I think this is just a wonderful way to help build a child's self-esteem. I'm sure all of
us can remember grade school and how uncomfortable it was to read in front of the
class. This can help.

Good idea. Kind of like the veteran cats or the jail training dogs. The humans help the animals (rescue) and they help us in return (education).

This is a neat idea. The child will be less worried about being judged and more interested in reading to entertain the animal.

What a great idea. This is a win win situation if shelter dogs are used. The kids learn and the dogs have homes. The kids can read without being judged and the dogs are getting much needed attention. More schools should adopt this program.

I think this is great. I have 3 teenagers of my own and two of them love to read, the other can't be bothered. I work in a pre-K classroom and I am always buying books to read to the children. They love to be read to. Since I am also a foster home, I have permission to bring my older kittens in for show and tell and we also do 2 weeks of pet shop/vet office. Here the kids get stories about how to care for animals and what a vet does. We have mini carriers and stuffed animals and scrubs for the kids to wear. They tell us stories about their pets and we make books.

I'm sure this program works. I used to read my dog & two cats when I was growing up. They were great listeners. Exposing children to the kindness & unconditional love of animals early in life can only benefit both.

What a fantastic idea! Dogs and other pets are so unconditional in their love of us - especially children, that they are the perfect reading partner to give a child some extra confidence!

Animals+kids=wonderful. This is a heartwarming story and I agree totally with it.

I know this sounds funny, but I know this works. When helping the kids with home work I dogs woudl help to. They would lay next to them as if they were learning rigth with them. Our daughter use to have trouble reading. Our dogs and her cat would sit a listen to her read. She build up her courage to read in front of others, not to mention she would look for books that she thought they would like to hear her read. Shes 15 now and she still reads to them. They still enjoy it! It's soothng for both

Being a first grade teacher I love this story and believe with my whole heart that
this is a wonderful way to reach children that are too shy to open up . The pet
would encourage and help build confidence in the reader.
