Animals Help Teach Kids to Read

Browse News

NATION – When it comes to learning to read, experts say practice makes perfect. But what if you're a shy six-year-old or an anxious second grader? For kids like that, reading to an animal may be a better option.

Groups dedicated to pairing animals with kids are springing up across the nation. Usually, horses and dogs are chosen to listen quietly as literary youth fumble through books like “Sam I Am” and “The Giving Tree.”

So why are animals good listeners? Teachers and animal experts agree – animals don't judge, they don't interrupt to correct mispronounced words, they just listen.

For a learning child, freedom to miss a word now and then and feel ok about it can increase confidence.

Prior to becoming teachers, the helpful hounds and horses undergo screening similar to that of therapy animals - to ensure their temperaments are right for the job.

One Baltimore group called Karma Dogs only uses rescued canines in their organization.

The Black Stallion Literacy Project serves Miami-Dade schools, but with horses instead of dogs. Its founder said he once witnessed a horse nudge a small Haitian girl who spoke little English and seemed nervous about reading. But she thought the horse was telling her to begin, and just like that she started reading.

As far as getting certified goes, it's a fairly simple process of testing the animal around mildly chaotic situations. Some dogs do need additional training. You may need to pay a nominal fee for that service.

I think that animals are capible of listening but not telling people that they are wrong or begin.

GREAT story. Very positive. I think animals offer so much unconditional love and are non judgemental that they improve the quality of life for many. This is just another example of this.

I love this! I'd seen a story about it quite a while back and am glad to see it's something that's still going and will hopefully take off! And it's so wonderful that shelter dogs are being used for this. This helps 2 fold, by giving the dogs a second chance and giving children the confidence they need to soar! I would love a program like that in my area. One of my furbabies would be perfect for something like this!

I think this is a great idea! It will help the kids with their reading. They'll certainly enjoy having the dogs in their class room AND, I also think that will help teach them respect for other living things as well.

Kudos for using shelter dogs. Great idea. Anytime shelter animals can be used for the good, it saves their lives. Kids relate to animals so well they should have an animal mascot in each classroom. Then they will be learning at an early age about caring for animals versus animal cruelty in their older years.

So true. We grown ups trying to be helpful or whatever, correct or sigh or are distracted by the hundred other things we need to get done can be more of a distraction. Animals listen and love. What a great idea!

This is a great story and I totally agree. Animals do not judge, criticize or make you feel badly about yourself in anyway. Always a faithful companion.

Children all need a best friend to share their thoughts and inhibitions with. There is nothing better than a great conversation with a dog or a horse. Solves most problems even reading!

How awesome! Who ever thought of this program is a very brilliant person! When I have children, maybe this will be how I get them to love reading!

We have this same program in our community and I think it is wonderful! Most kids love animals anyway, so what better way to also encourage a love of reading?
