Animals Help Teach Kids to Read

Browse News

NATION – When it comes to learning to read, experts say practice makes perfect. But what if you're a shy six-year-old or an anxious second grader? For kids like that, reading to an animal may be a better option.

Groups dedicated to pairing animals with kids are springing up across the nation. Usually, horses and dogs are chosen to listen quietly as literary youth fumble through books like “Sam I Am” and “The Giving Tree.”

So why are animals good listeners? Teachers and animal experts agree – animals don't judge, they don't interrupt to correct mispronounced words, they just listen.

For a learning child, freedom to miss a word now and then and feel ok about it can increase confidence.

Prior to becoming teachers, the helpful hounds and horses undergo screening similar to that of therapy animals - to ensure their temperaments are right for the job.

One Baltimore group called Karma Dogs only uses rescued canines in their organization.

The Black Stallion Literacy Project serves Miami-Dade schools, but with horses instead of dogs. Its founder said he once witnessed a horse nudge a small Haitian girl who spoke little English and seemed nervous about reading. But she thought the horse was telling her to begin, and just like that she started reading.

As far as getting certified goes, it's a fairly simple process of testing the animal around mildly chaotic situations. Some dogs do need additional training. You may need to pay a nominal fee for that service.

If only humans could be as understandidng and patient as animals. What a wonderful solution. Besides it teaches the children how wonderful and accepting animals can be and hopefully love them as they should be loved.

Yeah, that is the greatest part...they are learning several things at once. The kids and animals are being socialized with one another and learning appropriate ways to behave around one another, at the same time as the kids are learning to read.

This is great! Reading aloud helps learners chunk correctly and sometimes doing that in a large group with children who are better readers is intimidating. Using animals is great. My cats love to be read to--especially the Cat Who series, so cats can be used too, but probably more in a home where they are familiar with the human!

Very interesting, though there could be concerns about children afraid of or allergic to dogs. It would be better if they paired the poor readers with a kindergarten child to read to.

The problem with other children is the sometimes unintential negative words or body language the portray to the struggling child. The point of this article is to show how giving a child a COMPLETELY positive experience can encourage them to grow in their skills.

You have a good point. I think it would be a bad idea for the child who does have allergies.

That's so funny! But dogs can get away with something like that, because people don't expect it from them. Then again, if my sister fell asleep while I was talking to her like my cat does, I'd probably get really mad. ;)

I agree to a point...it is not negative to let a child know when they got a word wrong...this is the way kids learn how to read and spell....i do not want my child to be illiterate.

This encourages the learning process, mistake will happen but they will gain in confidence. If not, they won't learn anything anyways. Once they are gaining confidence then a teacher can provide guidance.

Tell me about it. These people don't seem to notice that they are earning their points dishonestly. There are shelters that REALLY need support, and these people are hindering their progress.

What a sweet idea. At least these children has someone who won't judge or fix their mistakes but only to listen. I read somewhere that dogs has a 250 word vocabulary, so i really do believe that this is one of the best ideas for children.

I think that helping a child getting a word correct is not judging them, it is teaching them...it would be worse not to let them know that they got a word wrong.

i think its a great idea...the teacher should record or listen off to the side as the child reads to the dog and later go over the words that had been said wrong..or know what needed to be worked on

What a great story! I think it is good for an animal to hear stories! Not only does it help kids because they feel good about being able to read to someone, I feel that the animal understands the fact that someone is loving them and socializing them. They know when they are being talked to. My cats love when I sing to them. We don't know what an animal is really thinking but I think they understand what's going on. An animal is the greatest companion anyone could ever have.

Good point. I agree that the interaction connects the reader to the animal and they truly are feeling the love and getting the socialization. We read to the feral cats at the center, so I know animals connect with the reading. What great practice for the kids.

This is a great program and shows the connection between animals and people. No matter what you do or say, animals won't judge you or get impatient and that's what kids need. There are so many presures on kids to be perfect, and this lets them be themselves.

Awesome story! Great for the children and everyone involved, especially for groups like Karma Dogs that use only rescued dogs! There are so many things our animal friends can do that humans simply can't, and most of it revolves around their capacity for unconditional love. Thanks for mentioning horses, too - they can be great therapists, also!

It's so odd how children and animals have this unique connection; I'm glad that these schools are using that connection to benift the children and the animals. It gives the children an avenue to learn and obtain confidence, yet allows the animal to have a "job" and be around people, which as we all know, animals LOVE. I think this is a great program, and hopefully this will spread into all the schools.

This is a great program - I have a friend who takes her GSD to schools in our area for reading day once a month and also to our Library once a month . She says everyone involved in that program seems to benefit from it - pupils and children as well as the adults and teachers - great opportunity for everyone involved

A great story. I used to tutor reading in my son's class in kindergarten and first grade. I'm sure the kids enjoy reading to the dogs, and the dogs don't care if it's the tenth time they've heard "Sam I Am" today.
