Animals Help Teach Kids to Read

Browse News

NATION – When it comes to learning to read, experts say practice makes perfect. But what if you're a shy six-year-old or an anxious second grader? For kids like that, reading to an animal may be a better option.

Groups dedicated to pairing animals with kids are springing up across the nation. Usually, horses and dogs are chosen to listen quietly as literary youth fumble through books like “Sam I Am” and “The Giving Tree.”

So why are animals good listeners? Teachers and animal experts agree – animals don't judge, they don't interrupt to correct mispronounced words, they just listen.

For a learning child, freedom to miss a word now and then and feel ok about it can increase confidence.

Prior to becoming teachers, the helpful hounds and horses undergo screening similar to that of therapy animals - to ensure their temperaments are right for the job.

One Baltimore group called Karma Dogs only uses rescued canines in their organization.

The Black Stallion Literacy Project serves Miami-Dade schools, but with horses instead of dogs. Its founder said he once witnessed a horse nudge a small Haitian girl who spoke little English and seemed nervous about reading. But she thought the horse was telling her to begin, and just like that she started reading.

As far as getting certified goes, it's a fairly simple process of testing the animal around mildly chaotic situations. Some dogs do need additional training. You may need to pay a nominal fee for that service.

This seems like a good idea although I'm sure that in some cases the animal may take the child's interest away from reading.

I agree, a young child can be distracted quite easy, like adding a dog into spelling time.

Sometimes teachers/programs must be creative and if this reaches the kids, then cool. Put the animals to work and let the world see that these animals are awesome and kids respond.

this is an interesting program and has many pluses ...about the only thing i can say is that at some point, we need to make sure the the mispronouciations and other errors are corrected in a positive manner with the children...follow-up really is just as important as the children having confidence...this can be done with out making the children feel bad...in a perfect world, the children will fell comfortable reading as much as they can understand to the animals and come to us for help with the words they dont understand

What a great story! I love this idea and would love to see it expand and be used all across the U.S. Illiteracy is a huge problem in this great nation of ours ... if animals can help, then by God, we should use them in that capacity. Children generally respond well to pets ... this is just a great idea!

Very Cool!! LOve animals ! I remember my dog being my best friend when I was little. I think this program is plus. It may also help children respect animals and prevent cruelty situations and fear of animals.

I know if they had this when I was in school learning to spell I might have worked harder, I mean seriously how would I have felt to get less of a grade at the end of the week than the class dog...thats motivation right there.

<Walks in house> Mom: So how did you do on your spelling test sweety? Me: I got beat by a dog!

I was thinking exactly that before I got to that paragraph. I really think we need this program in all schools.

I think what ever helps kids and animals is great.the only drawback I can see is if the teacher does not control the situation and the animal becomes more of a distraction or novelty, than a help.

Reading outloud builds confidence. Knowing your audience is listening, can help with self-esteem. Plus the animals get some great one-on-one. A win win program.

This is a good program, and even if your school doesn't have it, I would think you could have your kids try it with your family pet. Your animal is already used to your kids, and would probably listen attentively while your child read.

I wish they had this program when I was in school. I hated reading out loud. I think just about every kid does. So to be able to read and not be judged would have made me feel better about myself. And when folks feel better about themselves, they just do better.

I hope more schools will be able to pick up programs like this.

I also like the karma dogs using rescued dogs.

This is a great example of using animals for something that truly makes a difference in a child's life and learning abilities. I like the fact that rescured animals are used for this service to encourage the young ones to rescue an animal when they get older.
