Animals Help Teach Kids to Read

Browse News

NATION – When it comes to learning to read, experts say practice makes perfect. But what if you're a shy six-year-old or an anxious second grader? For kids like that, reading to an animal may be a better option.

Groups dedicated to pairing animals with kids are springing up across the nation. Usually, horses and dogs are chosen to listen quietly as literary youth fumble through books like “Sam I Am” and “The Giving Tree.”

So why are animals good listeners? Teachers and animal experts agree – animals don't judge, they don't interrupt to correct mispronounced words, they just listen.

For a learning child, freedom to miss a word now and then and feel ok about it can increase confidence.

Prior to becoming teachers, the helpful hounds and horses undergo screening similar to that of therapy animals - to ensure their temperaments are right for the job.

One Baltimore group called Karma Dogs only uses rescued canines in their organization.

The Black Stallion Literacy Project serves Miami-Dade schools, but with horses instead of dogs. Its founder said he once witnessed a horse nudge a small Haitian girl who spoke little English and seemed nervous about reading. But she thought the horse was telling her to begin, and just like that she started reading.

As far as getting certified goes, it's a fairly simple process of testing the animal around mildly chaotic situations. Some dogs do need additional training. You may need to pay a nominal fee for that service.

Just another example of the many wonderful things that animals can assist us with in this life. Yes - children and adults alike are usually captivated with animals when presented in the proper way. Cool idea!

I have done animal presentations in elementary schools on & off for several years. There is nothing in this world that catches a childs attention like a dog or a cat. This program is wonderful. I would love to see more schools find ways to teach children with a hands on approach like this. I am a firm believer that if a child has a love of something/ anything you can take that love & turn it into a positive tool for learning. What child doesn't just love animals?

Little Shelter should get involved in something like this in the local schools. What great publicity for the shelter and great help for young readers.

Animals make us less self- conscious. We are not being judged by them. We can make a mistake and they won't laugh. Just about every person could strike up a repoire with an animal.

I am a teacher and I definitely see the benefit in this. In my homework packets I let kids choose from a list one way to practice reading and I am adding the option of reading to a pet to that list next week!

I think this is great and see how a child could bond better with a pet and feel comfortable with it so the anxiety would be less. Great idea and I hope it will continue to be a popular one.

This is one of my favorite news stories because I love reading about children learning from animals and appreciating them from an early age. This is just a great success story. I have read about similar experiences where children are more willing to tell their dog about things that are worrying them when they can't express their feelings to an adult. Dogs are great listeners, and they also have the ability to pick up on our emotions and fears.

When my children were little, they often read stories aloud to their stuffed animals. Reading to a live animal makes perfect sense to me. What a terrific idea.
