Animals Help Teach Kids to Read

Browse News

NATION – When it comes to learning to read, experts say practice makes perfect. But what if you're a shy six-year-old or an anxious second grader? For kids like that, reading to an animal may be a better option.

Groups dedicated to pairing animals with kids are springing up across the nation. Usually, horses and dogs are chosen to listen quietly as literary youth fumble through books like “Sam I Am” and “The Giving Tree.”

So why are animals good listeners? Teachers and animal experts agree – animals don't judge, they don't interrupt to correct mispronounced words, they just listen.

For a learning child, freedom to miss a word now and then and feel ok about it can increase confidence.

Prior to becoming teachers, the helpful hounds and horses undergo screening similar to that of therapy animals - to ensure their temperaments are right for the job.

One Baltimore group called Karma Dogs only uses rescued canines in their organization.

The Black Stallion Literacy Project serves Miami-Dade schools, but with horses instead of dogs. Its founder said he once witnessed a horse nudge a small Haitian girl who spoke little English and seemed nervous about reading. But she thought the horse was telling her to begin, and just like that she started reading.

As far as getting certified goes, it's a fairly simple process of testing the animal around mildly chaotic situations. Some dogs do need additional training. You may need to pay a nominal fee for that service.

This is a great thing but I think any family can do this with their own pets...all dogs and cats are great listeners, they don't have to pass a test.

What a great program. Perhaps our local shelter and literacy organization in Cattaraugus County, NY can do a similar program. I wonder if there is any funding available to help defray costs?

I love this idea. I have seen articles in magazines and passed them on to friends who are teachers. Unfortunately, most teachers i know have been met with resistance regarding these programs. It's such a shame, because it really would help the kids.

This is a fabulous idea! It's a fact that children and animals do good things for each other. Animals seem to understand when a person is nervous, anxious, or sad, but they don't comment or judge. They just love, unconditionally. I wish groups like this existed all over the country. They should all use rescued shelter animals as well. That would doubly help the community!

Again not a new story, this has been around at least since my childhood,& I'm looking back on 60, admittedly it was not wide spread.
I'm pleased that this is now becoming a recognized form of education & in part thanks to the media, who to often report on, how shall I say this, Crap

This is a wonderful story and know it to be true. My son is learning to read and our local library has this program. We'll even practice reading in front of our dogs at home. It's true that they don't judge or interrupt, so it makes it easier for the child to get through the book stress free. My dogs love to sit and listen they think they are getting special attention and they are.

I have a friend whose Mastiffs are being used in a program like this. It is wonderful what animals and children can do together--and how an animal's unconditional love can inspire a child to do what they haven't dared to do before. And what a marvelous ides to use rescued dogs in this program--double good!!

This is the hot new trend that has gotten some shelters a lot of grants from foundations that normally only aid kids, not animals. I have seen no doumented studies that any of this really improves kids' reading abilities. But hey, if the shelters can get some money out of the foundations for this, more power to the animals.

My dogs are great listeners. Our little Pickle will actually look at you while you read. ( he watches tv too) We have our daughter read her homework papers to him. She is 9. She had alot of problems learning to read. She has been reading to the dogs for 2 yrs now. She reads at a 6th grade level. I don't know if it was the dog or not. But who knows!

What a fabulous idea! It seems that everyday we discover something else wonderful that our animal friends can do to make our lives better. And all they ask for is the basic needs of food, a home, and love. They give so much more than so many of them get. This litteracy progam gets three Zootoo cheers! Way to go!

As a reading teacher, I can see that reading aloud to a dog or cat can be very beneficial. This program would really help children who do not like to read. I wonder if the animals in the classroom can be taught to raise their paws when they have to use the restroom.
