Animals Help Teach Kids to Read

Browse News

NATION – When it comes to learning to read, experts say practice makes perfect. But what if you're a shy six-year-old or an anxious second grader? For kids like that, reading to an animal may be a better option.

Groups dedicated to pairing animals with kids are springing up across the nation. Usually, horses and dogs are chosen to listen quietly as literary youth fumble through books like “Sam I Am” and “The Giving Tree.”

So why are animals good listeners? Teachers and animal experts agree – animals don't judge, they don't interrupt to correct mispronounced words, they just listen.

For a learning child, freedom to miss a word now and then and feel ok about it can increase confidence.

Prior to becoming teachers, the helpful hounds and horses undergo screening similar to that of therapy animals - to ensure their temperaments are right for the job.

One Baltimore group called Karma Dogs only uses rescued canines in their organization.

The Black Stallion Literacy Project serves Miami-Dade schools, but with horses instead of dogs. Its founder said he once witnessed a horse nudge a small Haitian girl who spoke little English and seemed nervous about reading. But she thought the horse was telling her to begin, and just like that she started reading.

As far as getting certified goes, it's a fairly simple process of testing the animal around mildly chaotic situations. Some dogs do need additional training. You may need to pay a nominal fee for that service.

It is funny that all my kids read to their dogs. That is how my older ones learned to read and my little ones are learning now.

I think this is a wonderful program. They're right--animals don't judge. They just look up at you adoringly, hanging on your every word. How could their sweetness fail to inspire confidence in a child?

I saw something on Animal Planet about this last year. It was pretty amazing how the kids opened up to the animals. It makes me remember how I used to read to my cat when I was a kid. :)

Wow this is such a great idea! I wish they had this when I was young... I would of loved it. Its great that animals can help us humans in ways we can't help ourselves. I'm sure this is a great opportunity for kids that are scared to read infront of intimidating grown ups... they get to read to a cute doggie or horse and not have to worry oh I hope I'm doing this right they can just enjoy... its almost like reading to stuffed animals except they can get a wet kisses on their nose.

This is a wonderful project. My dog just passed his theapy evaluation. I plan to take a workshop in a program that prepares you to take your dog into the classroom. Children read to the dog:) Since I am a retired teacher and my dog likes children I am hoping this will be a perfect fit.

I truly believe that all schools should have a companion dog that can be used to help children with problems. I think that the dog should receive traning and then be allowed into every school. The children who never get love with react favorable to this pet
