Animals Help Teach Kids to Read

Browse News

NATION – When it comes to learning to read, experts say practice makes perfect. But what if you're a shy six-year-old or an anxious second grader? For kids like that, reading to an animal may be a better option.

Groups dedicated to pairing animals with kids are springing up across the nation. Usually, horses and dogs are chosen to listen quietly as literary youth fumble through books like “Sam I Am” and “The Giving Tree.”

So why are animals good listeners? Teachers and animal experts agree – animals don't judge, they don't interrupt to correct mispronounced words, they just listen.

For a learning child, freedom to miss a word now and then and feel ok about it can increase confidence.

Prior to becoming teachers, the helpful hounds and horses undergo screening similar to that of therapy animals - to ensure their temperaments are right for the job.

One Baltimore group called Karma Dogs only uses rescued canines in their organization.

The Black Stallion Literacy Project serves Miami-Dade schools, but with horses instead of dogs. Its founder said he once witnessed a horse nudge a small Haitian girl who spoke little English and seemed nervous about reading. But she thought the horse was telling her to begin, and just like that she started reading.

As far as getting certified goes, it's a fairly simple process of testing the animal around mildly chaotic situations. Some dogs do need additional training. You may need to pay a nominal fee for that service.

This is a great story, and another great use for animals. I know I was one of those anxious 2nd graders. Maybe if this was popular back when I was in school it would have helped me. I think that this a great new way to help kids and I hope that it becomes more and more prominant.

I have seen more articles on this lately. I also posted that my mom and my sister do this in their community with their dogs. I would love to start this at my library. I have not heard about using a horse though. That would be very unique but I can see some complications with bringing a horse. I think a dog or cat would be much easier.

We really don't use animals as much as we can. How many pets stay home and live very solitary lives? They need jobs and they love to work! Let's keep programs like this going.

My kennel club has gone out to the Air Force base library with some of the dogs for the kids to read to. It's a win win situation for both the dogs and the kids.

This is another situation where animals can not only be our friends and family members, but can also help children who may be shy or not confident, to learn to relax and let learning come at their own speed. It never stops amazing me just how important animals are in our lives and how we are learning even more ways for them to help children and adults. I am so thankful for the animals in my life and that my parents allowed me to have dogs and cats while growing up.

Some kids are too shy to read aloud. If this will help them, then why not give it a try. I know my granddaughter (5)likes to "read' to her cats.

What an amazing idea! I remember in sixth grade my teacher brought in her therapy dog once a week and instead of us kids being unruly we were surprisingly more relaxed!

What a wonderful idea! I work with struggling readers and they are sometimes rather reluctant to read to a grown up. I bet they would love to read to a dog or cat. No one would judge them and they would feel relaxed and comfortable. Nice program!

Having volunteered in classrooms for 12 years, I KNOW it would help to have an animal for shy or 'odd' kids to read to. SUPER plan!

Children and animals have a real affinity for each other, and it isn't surprising that a child finds it easier to read to a non-judgemental animal! I think that's a wonderful program!

I don't know why some people find this surpriseing I mean think about it and kids growing up and what do you picture (kids with puppies, kittens, frogs and the list goes on) It's a natural part of life and growing and that's why most of us find animals so endearing to us.

This is one concept I never put much thought into until I read this article. It did bring back memories of childhood when "playing school" with pets was not uncommon, especially for the shy or only child. So, using this in schools is a great idea. I'm thrilled to see, once again, pets being used in such a theraputic way.

What a cool concept. I have to agree, animals love the attention and most animals (my parrots aside) give unconditional love so there is no criticism, need to worry about not being perfect...just practice and the ability to develop pure pleasure from reading.

Great idea and something that parents can use with their children also.

I think this is a great program, many children are shy around other people, but few are shy around animals. This can do so much to help.

Truly a win-win situation. I never thought about having animals involved in literacy but why not? Seems to be working out real well. Love the Boston group calling itself Karma Dogs and using only rescued canines. Perfect!

I love this story! Any good pet owner know what wonderful listeners animals are. I'm glad that their talent is being put to such good use. Children, especially seem to understand animals and have a real respect and love for them and I think animals feel the same for children. In this case, both the animals and the children are benefiting from each other. It warms my heart.
