Animals, Humans Live Side-by-Side in Harmony

Browse News

HARMONY, Fla. -- In many towns across the country, wildlife is considered a nuisance. But in the community of Harmony, Fla., wild turkeys and alligators have the right of way.

"You pull out of here in the mornings and there are wild turkeys and there are deer and it's just wonderful," Harmony resident Nancy Snyder said.

Harmony was developed with one goal in mind -- and that's to allow people and undomesticated animals to co-exist in peace.

"We're trying to develop a community where there's plenty of habitat so you can see wildlife on a regular basis," Harmony Conservation Director Greg Golgowski said.

That commitment caught the eye of people like Kerul Cassel.

"One of the things that attracted me to Harmony was the fact that they had dog parks and the fact that they had policies that were friendly toward animals," said Cassel, a Harmony resident.

Harmony developers say organizations like the Humane Society of the United States have helped shape its policies.

"We've adopted a set of covenants that we use that goes with each home, not just guiding architectural standards, but also the way residents interact with nature," Golgowski said.

And that means addressing problems before they arise.

"A big part of avoiding conflicts with wildlife is not feeding them," Golgowski said. "That really seems to break down the barriers between animals and people so we're absolutely strict on that."

Experts like Matt Bledsoe, the assistant manager of Wekiva Springs State Park, in Wapopka, Fla., agree that Harmony is taking the right approach.

"Education is the key," Bledsoe said. "Leaving wild animals alone is almost all instances is the best."

On top of landscape guidelines, Harmony also adopts environmentally friendly practices that benefit animals within its borders. Seventy percent of the 11,000 acre community consists of wetland and lakes, which cannot be developed.

Those lakes are home to noiseless, solar powered boats that allow residents to unobtrusively observe wild animals. Similar measures are taken on Harmony's streets, where dark sky lights direct light downward and do not disturb migrating birds.

On the eighth hole of the golf preserve, up to 500 bats can live in one bat box.

Farm animals are also welcome at Harmony. Pygmy goats, chickens, horses, cows and pigs all know the community as home. Residents can visit the farm and even help care for the animals.

"We're very hopeful that people will come here and see what is working so that other developers will see that and realize that they can do the right thing and still make money," Golgowski said.

Harmony is about 40 minutes south of Walt Disney World and currently has 500 homes. Developers say up to 7,200 homes are on the drawing board. For more information, visit HarmonyFl.com.

What a great idea. Though, you have to read the middle of the article: People who feed wild animals are hurting them! So STOP FEEDING THE PIGEONS / DUCKS / GEESE!

OK- I'm a native Floridian who is eternally creeped out by communities such as Celebration, where there are so many rules and restrictions. But I have to admit that Harmony sounds like a community with its heart in the right place and I'm particularly happy that there are strict rules against feeding the wildlife.

Perfect name for this community! There needs to be more use of solar power too. It's an excellent idea for powering boats. Safer for the environment as well as aquatic creatures. Hope this idea catches on, after all it's their world too.

Here in my town we have a man made lake in Bluemont additon that the ducks congregate at. The city actually wants to get rid of them, and residents say they are a niusance. There's a different mentality up here. . . sad.

I remember as a kid it was rare to see any wildlife let alone walking around town. The most you could hope for was a squirrel. Now we have bald eagles flying around every winter. People watching out for animals rights made it possible

I would move there in a heartbeat if i could! It sounds so great! Where i live, there is not any dog parks within an hour or so. Atleast not that i have heard of. It would be great to wake up and see all the animals. I see tons of animals where i am now. Deer, Wild turkey, But the dog parks are what would make me want to move there the most. And the farm animals are pretty cool too! Sounds like fun. I would like to visit there some time in my life. :)

Well i don't know how far i would go with the statement "man living side by side with animals in harmony" (at least from the animals point of view) some animals maybe...
However, an area not far from where i live (approx 9 miles) has been OVERDEVELOPED with housing and NEEDLESS TO SAY, has CHASED OUR WILDLIFE into the NOW SUBURBAN areas that they turned it into... so the deer , and geese and what ever else once lived there now have no where else to go in that area. wetlands have even been filled in and built on...

What i do think is neat is when hibernation is over, where i live, i get to see 'possums, raccoons, snakes, right in my back yard... my cat brings in all kinds of little critters , along with the newly hatched garden and bull snakes...

I don't mind living with wildlife , i think it's beautiful. but developers have gone too far... (Thank goodness they cannot do that in my area due to building ordinances and acreage laws). all they care about is the almight dollar and not about the protection of the animals...

We have lots of wildlife in our community and most people live in harmony pretty well. Yesterday on of the crew said they saw a cougar down at the back of the dog exercise area so we're keeping our eyes OPEN!

I love the story and Harmony must be an animal lovers paradise. 500 families that live within the guidelines of man with nature. Do you really think you can find 7200 families that will follow the rules? I really, really hope you do, but in todays society that could be difficult.

That is awesome, I live in Indiana and I see so much disrespect for animals. The first thing many people do when they see an animal on their property is to get the gun out. I protect as many as I can, I have 40 acres and I try to protect my wildlife and people have the nerve to get mad at me because I don't allow hunting on my property, go figure. Does not daunt me, I stand up for animals.

THANK YOU!!! same for us, we absolutly allow no hunting on our property small as it is... it is just too much fun to watch the wildlife in their natural setting, and we are right in the middle of their home. so who is going to protect them if we don't?

Nice how they can let animals be side by side with them like that. It's good to see it because the more habitat we keep taking away from animals the more we are going to have to come up with some mid point.
