Animals, Humans Live Side-by-Side in Harmony

Browse News

HARMONY, Fla. -- In many towns across the country, wildlife is considered a nuisance. But in the community of Harmony, Fla., wild turkeys and alligators have the right of way.

"You pull out of here in the mornings and there are wild turkeys and there are deer and it's just wonderful," Harmony resident Nancy Snyder said.

Harmony was developed with one goal in mind -- and that's to allow people and undomesticated animals to co-exist in peace.

"We're trying to develop a community where there's plenty of habitat so you can see wildlife on a regular basis," Harmony Conservation Director Greg Golgowski said.

That commitment caught the eye of people like Kerul Cassel.

"One of the things that attracted me to Harmony was the fact that they had dog parks and the fact that they had policies that were friendly toward animals," said Cassel, a Harmony resident.

Harmony developers say organizations like the Humane Society of the United States have helped shape its policies.

"We've adopted a set of covenants that we use that goes with each home, not just guiding architectural standards, but also the way residents interact with nature," Golgowski said.

And that means addressing problems before they arise.

"A big part of avoiding conflicts with wildlife is not feeding them," Golgowski said. "That really seems to break down the barriers between animals and people so we're absolutely strict on that."

Experts like Matt Bledsoe, the assistant manager of Wekiva Springs State Park, in Wapopka, Fla., agree that Harmony is taking the right approach.

"Education is the key," Bledsoe said. "Leaving wild animals alone is almost all instances is the best."

On top of landscape guidelines, Harmony also adopts environmentally friendly practices that benefit animals within its borders. Seventy percent of the 11,000 acre community consists of wetland and lakes, which cannot be developed.

Those lakes are home to noiseless, solar powered boats that allow residents to unobtrusively observe wild animals. Similar measures are taken on Harmony's streets, where dark sky lights direct light downward and do not disturb migrating birds.

On the eighth hole of the golf preserve, up to 500 bats can live in one bat box.

Farm animals are also welcome at Harmony. Pygmy goats, chickens, horses, cows and pigs all know the community as home. Residents can visit the farm and even help care for the animals.

"We're very hopeful that people will come here and see what is working so that other developers will see that and realize that they can do the right thing and still make money," Golgowski said.

Harmony is about 40 minutes south of Walt Disney World and currently has 500 homes. Developers say up to 7,200 homes are on the drawing board. For more information, visit HarmonyFl.com.

This is a wonderful idea, perhaps other areas should try this, especially with all of the animals being driven out of their natural habitats because of humans building their homes. =:=o)

I think this is jst wonderful. Not only do they have the best intentions, but they are very educated on what to do and what not to do when it comes to the animals! Kudos!!

That would be wonderful. Where I live they round up the geese around the lake and sent them to a food bank to be killed because the rich people around the lake don't like the poop!

What a wonderful place to live! I have to agree with their policy on feeding the wildlife. We've had wild turkeys where I work, and some people fed them. It got so the turkeys would practically chase you across the parking lot to your car because they thought you might have food for them.

I wonder how this model would work in an area with different land use policies. I mean, I don't live anywhere near Disneyworld or planned communities...

I loved this article. I wish there were more areas like this one. Here there's so many new homes being built and forests being lost. The black bears, deer, and Florida panthers have no place to go. I'm always hearing of a bear or deer hit by cars. Our farm here is a small one. It's wonderful to look out in my back pasture from time to time and see a doe with her baby munching grass along with our horses. Some day that too may cease. Kudos to this town and it's people!!!!

I'd prefer to live in this town (out west) that Iread about where most people still ride their horses wherever they have to go. The town maintains laws that keep it horse & rider friendly.

living in florida and watching the sprawl and the wildlife areas diminish in some areas i agree the animals should be part of the communitys. and like spring hill they developed it with specific plots just for animals or future park land.

i sorta feel like we live that way in our little corner of the world. we have coyotes, wild hogs, bobcats and many rabbits, rats, mice, and hawks. It seems like they are all working it out in spite of us humans and our domesticated animals.

Sounds like where I live... I have hawks, ospreys, sandhill cranes and the nonavian types that hang out around swamps. Except 'gators. With the drought, the gators moved on.

We should all be living this way. Too bad the world has become so crowded and nature unfriendly that this kind of story makes news. Makes me feel lucky to be living within a mile of a pond with regular visits from storks, herons, koots, geese, trumpeter swans, and more.

I absolutely adore Sandhill Cranes. They really amaze me. Such beautiful creatures. I wish they were more protected. I've seen one get hit before and watched the mate freak out. It was one of the worst things I've ever seen, especially since they mate for life.

I'd love to live in a place where the wildlife was so close. All we have around here is the Canada Geese which roam around a Middle Eastern ConFlicts Memorial Wall in town. I like them, but there is little variety. Spring is fun with all the little ones.

Cool story, my uncle used to live in the wetlands or alligator alley, his backyard is literally a canal with gators roaming free, and flamingos, he loves it. It should be interesting to see communities develop in the future that have a philosophy of living in harmony with nature.

I wish my home town and it's people would work together with the powers that be to make this a home to any animal that claimed it. There just ain't enough people here that give a crap about animals. The ones that do are few and far between.

How cool is that! What a concept -not messing with wildlife and finding a way to co-exist. All of the issues between wildlife and humans can be tracked back to humans either taking a habitat, cutting off a food/water source or interacting with wild animals and making them pests. So glad to see someone has a clue and is addressing it. Hope no one in the area messes it up!

I wish more towns were like that. Where I live people are always complaining about the wildlife. I enjoy seeing the deer and fox that run in the field behind me but most of my neighbors are scared of them.
