AKC's Newest Breed: The Leonberger

Browse News

NEW YORK -- The 2009 Meet The Breeds Convention at the Jacob Javits Center in New York was an opportunity to see an astounding variety of dogs and cats at the event on October 17 and 18. Sponsored by the American Kennel Club and Cat Fancier's Association, the event introduced attendees to the history and cultural origins of America's favorite pets.

Zootoo's K9 in the City team was on the scene, checking out the new kids on the block, and in this case, that means the Leonberger -- a canine which was voted on by the AKC at the event for formal recognition of the breed.

Check out the video above to see K9 in the City's Lucy Thompson get the scoop on the Leonberger.

Tell us what you think about “AKC's Newest Breed: The Leonberger” below or submit story ideas for K9 in the City by e-mailing Haley Finnegan at: hfinnegan@zootoo.com.

this is one huge dog

Good lord, that dog is enormous. Was it originally bred for hunting mastodons or something?

That's what I thought too, when I first saw him. Or maybe Shepherd and St. Bernard.

I love animals--especially dogs. There are times when I feel that the AKC goes a little "overboard" with it's rules and regulations. It just seems like a lot of "fluff".

Never heard of it, but from what I could see of the picture, it reminds me of a St. Bernard - German Shepherd mix! I wish we could see the face better. Guess I'd better do an online search to check it out.

I just did a search, and found alot of info about them on www.dogbreedsinfo.com
If you add the following to the url, it will take you right to it. /leonberger.htm It told of the three breeds that came together to make this particular breed, and I think it said leonbergers came into being in 1864.

I did a double take when I saw the name. We have a family named Leonberger that lives in the area I grew up in, but I didn't know there was a dog with that name.

I don't know why zootoo wouldn't accept the whole url I gave you below. All it gave you was www.dogbiz.com It failed to include the rest, which is /dogs-grp3leonberger/leonberger.htm I hope it will show in my message this time. If not, then I don't know what else to do.
