AKC Program Improves Pits

Browse News

TAMPA BAY – Pit bulls are commonly in the news, making headlines in stories involving violence, like dog fighting or attacks. But a training class in Tampa Bay, Florida is showing how this breed isn’t born mean, and how environment contributes to the behavior of any animal.

A recent “Canine Good Citizen” class at the SPCA of Tampa Bay was full of dogs which obeyed commands, constantly looked to their handlers for direction, and barely barked while running through drills. In what may surprise fearful animal observers, this class of overachievers was full of pit bulls.

“They aren’t some other species just because they’re a pit bull. They have the same characteristics as ‘regular’ dogs – they’re loyal, good companions and easily trained,” said Donna Bainter, Behavior Manager for SPCA Tampa Bay.

While known as the “bully breed”, this class of dogs -- one after another -- jumped hurdles, sat and stayed on command -- without being controlled by a leash, navigated turns in and out of cones, experienced simulated crowded conditions involving dogs and humans, and allowed Bainter to check their face, teeth and fur.

Bainter said she can’t explain Insurance Information Institute statistics that show pit bulls as being involved in the most number of dog bites across the country. She blames the “bad rap” on media coverage and perceptions of an uneducated public that doesn’t take into consideration how an animal is treated and sheltered as factors too.

Stories don’t “look at the way the animal is housed -- that it lives on a logging chain that weighs more than the dog, or that it’s used for breeding and not a ‘family pet’,” Bainter said. “So you see ‘family pet attacks’ and this dog probably never spent more than five minutes in the house. It makes a big difference.”

Pit bulls are considered “working dogs” so they need more structure during training, explained Bainter, as opposed to a sight hound, or greyhound, which are more visual and need different type of training, said Bainter.

The “Canine Good Citizen” certificate can be earned by any dog, and the guidelines are the same across breeds. While the certificate doesn’t guarantee “something won’t happen later,” Bainter said it does confirm that “at the time the dog took the test, it met all the requirements.”

You can find out more about the “Good Citizen” evaluation by visiting the American Kennel Club (AKC) Web site at akc.org. For classes and certifications, check with your local SPCA and Humane Society.

This is excellent to see that the AKC is taking steps to educating the public on the reality of pitbulls. A dog's behavior is usually a reflection of that dog's owner, not the dog. It would be wonderful to see pitbulls get recognized for the loving animals they can be

Yay! Finally a good story about pitties! Good for those dogs, their owners and the AKC for getting the word out about these great dogs.

I am so tired of pits getting a bad rep. I was raised with pits and can tell you they would not have turned on me or my parents! They would have attacked if you came in our yard or hurt one of us but isn't that what you want someone to protect your property and you?

This is great. Hopefully the rest of society will catch on to the fact that the majority of pits are good dogs.

I agree, it really is how they are trained and treated. Any animal can be mean if abused, neglected and trained to be mean.

Glad to see Pits getting some "Positive press" for a change. I think that what is really needed is a training class for some of their owners. You know that the responsible owners who are concerned about their own dogs and the breed in general aren't the ones who really need this class. They are going to go on their own. It's figuring out a way to get the less than responsible owners to attend a class like this that is the challenge.

Finally a good story about pitties! They are easily trained and are very people-oriented ... so sad so many people get them and foster bad traits in them. A dog is only as good as it's owner.

I think that breed specific training classes is a good idea that would help reduce problems for more than just pits. Great Danes and tea cup poodles may both be dogs but they can have very different needs

It's not really the "AKC" that's doing something stellar here... the AKC has had this "canine good citizen" test available for a while now, to any breed or mixed-breed. The wonderful thing is that this class from the SPCA of Tampa Bay was full of pit bulls and their owners who were working to improve their dogs.

Again-responsible owners, good citizen dogs...no matter what the breed.

My Pits got their Good Citizen Certificate 10 years ago. Bullet passed away last June, but Ammo is still going. They both became Therapy Dogs and visited many Group and Nursing homes. I now have 2 9 month old puppies that I'm working with to do the same. All my pits were rescued from a city shelter. Bullet was shot by someone unknown and left to die. She was picked up by Dog control and brought to the vet hospital where I worked. The vet couldn't put her down because she was licking him while he was examing the shattered leg from the 2 bullets that exited from her chest. So I told him, if you can save her and fix the leg, I'll take her. And I did.

Couldn't have said it better myself, it's the media coverage and the uneducated public who have given this dog breed a bad rep. I'm very thrilled about the canine good citizen class, I think it will work wonders for pits and maybe help with this wide spread "pit stigma". Wonderful news.

I agree that pitbulls have been given an unfair reputation. I have met many pitbulls that are very sweet and well-behaved dogs. Pitbulls have a lot of potential, but unfortunately so many of these dogs have just not been given the opportunity. They require more socialization, as well as physical & mental stimulation, and unfortunately there are more pitbulls out there than capable owners.

It's good to see a step in the right direction; not just for the Pit Bulls, but any breed. This is an opportunity to show you and your dog are willing to go that extra mile to ensure they are safe to be around. Yes, anything can happen later on, but isn't that with every animal and person?

Great idea - would love to do it locally as well.

I agree completely that it is NOT the breed, it is the owner and how the dog has been raised. Any dog can become a "bully" depending on its environment.

So nice. NOw I wish these stupid tv court judges would get wise. Makes me so angry when they immediately decide a person is guilty because the dog is a Pit.

I am glad to see this. I have been around enough animals to know that it is not the breed, but the manner in which they are treated. Unfortunately, some people who desire this breed either don't know how to socialize/train them or train and treat them in ways that are destructive - both to the dog and others.

I have 3 and I beg to differ. I've worked with dogs for 30 years. The real meanies are people who raise them to be aggresive. Watch the Dog Whisperer he has a bunch, all together with all kinds of breeds.

I am glad to see positive news about these dogs. I volunteer at a no-kill shelter and we always have dogs who are mixed breeds, mostly bull terriers, some of whom have been terribly abused. They are all very loving and just need someone to care about them. One that I walked this morning was so happy when a shop owner stopped to make a fuss over him and that he rewarded him with doggie kisses.

We currently have 3 pitts in shelter care and each one would easily pass a good citizen's test thanks to a small number of volunteers (Lauren,Lee,...) who keep giving them hope. It is a shame to see so many other, newer volunteers afraid to walk them, and potential adopters who pass them by just because of the name of their breed. Programs like this are important and can make such a difference. Please, judge the dog in front of you, not the pr of the breed.

Every time I see an advertisment that has a pitbull in it I love it.For instance on the do it youself tag machine at our local pet supply store there is a great big pit mix pictuerd in the ad on the machine. Also at that same store there is an advertisment poster right at the front of the store telling about the vet services they offer and it has a pitbull on it.I just think that getting them out there in the public eye in a non intrusive positive way can only help their plight. They are my favorite breed along with chihuahuas.

This is great news and I hope it helps to change most people's impression of pit bulls. I'm sure people are also attacked every day by many other breeds of dogs but these dogs always seem to be the only ones making the news.

The American Kennel Club time and time again fights against BSL laws. This is a step in the right direction.

I have 2 dogs that are Canine Good Citizens. Training for the test is a great way to bond with your dog.

A responsible owner has high expectations of the dog's behavior, and shows the dog the right way to behave, then continually reinforces the lesson. As long as the owner maintains the high standard, the dog will continue to conform to that standard.

Most of the problem pits come from owners who do not socialize or train their animal, then let him or her run loose in the neighborhood. Yes, occasionally an animal can get loose, but a good owner can call them back. I know I can, and in an "emergency" like when the dogs are heading to the road, I offer a treat that will bring them to a screeching halt, then bounding back to me. (No dog in their right mind will refuse a trip to McDonalds! Not even chasing rabbits can trump that)

Of course - but that's true with any breed. Rarely do news articles even acknowledge that pit bulls are trainable (in a good way...) in the first place. This was a nice change of pace, and a better example of what potential these dogs have with responsible owners.

Right, there is no guarantee with any dog at all. I just had to pick up a dog in our prison program that bit the dog handler. It is an aussi shepherd. They were in training class and the handler gave the down signal and the dog lunged and bit him. Yes, an aussi shepherd. Yet, I am not allowed the pits, dobs, rotts, pure chowes, pure german shepherds in prison because they are classed as aggressive breeds.

Any dog can bite.

Me too! I've known some families who had Pits and they were the best dogs! They looked after the family children and grandchildren, were loyal, gentle and loving dogs. They were properly trained and socialized. I myself have rescued 2 Pits who were kept on short ropes without shelter and barely food or water. They were malnourished and wormy when I took them to my vet. But not once were they agressive to my dogs or me or anyone who came around. I found them a home on a farm with my ex-husband's cousin and his family. That was almost 8 years ago and they are still with the family and they've never had one problem with them!
I truely believe that it's in how ANY dog is raised as to how they behave! Kudos to the Tampa SPCA for helping this breed through proper training!

Great story! Sets a great example for what pit bulls or any other dog can be with the proper care and training. The problem dogs are results of problems with the owner - they either train their dogs to be aggressive, or they don't train them at all.
