AKC Program Improves Pits

Browse News

TAMPA BAY – Pit bulls are commonly in the news, making headlines in stories involving violence, like dog fighting or attacks. But a training class in Tampa Bay, Florida is showing how this breed isn’t born mean, and how environment contributes to the behavior of any animal.

A recent “Canine Good Citizen” class at the SPCA of Tampa Bay was full of dogs which obeyed commands, constantly looked to their handlers for direction, and barely barked while running through drills. In what may surprise fearful animal observers, this class of overachievers was full of pit bulls.

“They aren’t some other species just because they’re a pit bull. They have the same characteristics as ‘regular’ dogs – they’re loyal, good companions and easily trained,” said Donna Bainter, Behavior Manager for SPCA Tampa Bay.

While known as the “bully breed”, this class of dogs -- one after another -- jumped hurdles, sat and stayed on command -- without being controlled by a leash, navigated turns in and out of cones, experienced simulated crowded conditions involving dogs and humans, and allowed Bainter to check their face, teeth and fur.

Bainter said she can’t explain Insurance Information Institute statistics that show pit bulls as being involved in the most number of dog bites across the country. She blames the “bad rap” on media coverage and perceptions of an uneducated public that doesn’t take into consideration how an animal is treated and sheltered as factors too.

Stories don’t “look at the way the animal is housed -- that it lives on a logging chain that weighs more than the dog, or that it’s used for breeding and not a ‘family pet’,” Bainter said. “So you see ‘family pet attacks’ and this dog probably never spent more than five minutes in the house. It makes a big difference.”

Pit bulls are considered “working dogs” so they need more structure during training, explained Bainter, as opposed to a sight hound, or greyhound, which are more visual and need different type of training, said Bainter.

The “Canine Good Citizen” certificate can be earned by any dog, and the guidelines are the same across breeds. While the certificate doesn’t guarantee “something won’t happen later,” Bainter said it does confirm that “at the time the dog took the test, it met all the requirements.”

You can find out more about the “Good Citizen” evaluation by visiting the American Kennel Club (AKC) Web site at akc.org. For classes and certifications, check with your local SPCA and Humane Society.

Being the owner of a doberman, I agree that it is not an issue of breed, but the dog! What a great story!!!

AWESOME!!!! Pitts are incredible dogs! We have raised 5 Pitts and have been around many, many more. They are NOT aggressive by nature. In fact, every one we've had have been big "babies". Our last one was raised with Pekingneses, and was submissive towards THEM. (He thought he was THEIR size) It goes back to "Punish the deed, not the breed". The bad rep comes from "bad" owners...NOT bad dogs!!! Maybe if they started punishing the owners, more than the dogs, for the problems, the rep would improve.

am so glad people are working hard to make people understand pitbulls. It is not the breed of dog that mean. It depends on how they were raised and treated throughout their lives.

The American Kennel Club doesnt recognized the American Pit Bull Terrier...they recognize the American Staffordshire Terrier. But, these two breeds are one in the same. The name difference was put into effect in the hopes that it would disassociate pitbulls from the negative reputation they have acquired. Whatever you call them, they are very intelligent dogs that need a firm hand and are not for first time dog owners. In my opinion as a trainer, they DO have the propensity for agression, but that is not to say that they exhibit agression inappropriately when appropriately raised. Like I said, not for the novice. There are very simply mistakes you can make when raising a pit puppy that can lead to problems later on down the line, such as allowing the dog to view your hand as an object of play, something to nibble or snap at. While it's cute as a puppy and can be encouraged to an extent in smaller breeds, it should never be rewarded in a pit puppy. When he gets older, the jaws will clamp down playfully, and you will be missing your finger. But for the most part, I agree with the article. I have a pit bull myself (with a bit of boxer in there as well, i believe) and he is a wonderful dog, just a bit high strung and in need of a firm hand.

About time I hear some good news about pits! They're my favorite breed because they're so misunderstood. But...I thought the AKC didn't recognize pit bulls, only staffs...

I think this is a wonderful program. It's about time pit bulls are getting fair press. I read on CNN that a pit bull attacked a child. This is horrible for the child and the family but the report pointed to the pit bull when in fact there was also another breed involved in this. But the fact that it was a pit ruled the article. Until the media starts being fair in reporting all dog attacks, this breed will suffer. The public certainly needs to educate themselves. Any dog will attack if it is taught that or not nourished by their owners. I applaud the Tampa group for trying to help and inform people about this loving breed.

All dogs can be good dogs.....it's a matter of how they are treated and trained. Exercise, dicipline, affection........who couldn't thrive on those three things???? Too bad so many breeds get a bad rap!

Just as the article said, it is not the breed but the way they are treated and raised. It used to be dobermans and the rots and I am sure that it will be something else in the future. If you treat them bad they will be bad. The same thing happens to people.

Good to read something nice about pits. My daughter has pit mix who is a lamb. He takes classes and is very well behaved. She recently walked him with his leadleash and was amazed at the comments she overheard while walking by people. They thought he had a muzzle on and mean. People need to be educated.

Thank you for posting a positive pit bull story! I hope that more people consider having their dog tested for CGC (Canine Good Citizen) because it's a great way to prove your dog is as great as you know it is!

I am very pleased to see a "positive" article about the breed. Now if only the media would follow in the same footsteps, instead of being so negative, it might have a bigger impact world wide. I own a pit bull mix dog, "Sugah", and she is the most loving and devoted animal, despite what she has been through in her past.

Well, of course, "they aren't some other species just because they're a pitt bull". These fine animals are burdened with the "bad rap" because of miscreants like Michael Vick and a multitude of "unknown" losers who are of his lowlife ilk, because there is a class of people--and I use the word very very loosely--who obtain a pitt bull for bad purposes only--and as the article points out--media coverage of incidents involving pitt bulls (how they love a bad dog story)--and most importantly the perceptions of an uneducated public.

Good Work American Kennel Club and Tampa Bay SPCA. Let's all hope we see more programs like this one.

i remember while growing up that german shepards had a very bad rap as being aggressive dogs and now it's pit bulls. people will become more educated over time and it will die down. typically people not willing to train their pitbulls are the ones to own them. i know there are a ton of responsible pit bull owners out there but we are only hearing of the bad owners.

Finally! A good story for the future pitts! I hope that people start to see them as animals instead of killing machines. People need to stop training these animals to be so vicious, it seriously is not the breed of the dog, it is the way the dog is trained that makes them that way, and that is when you have to blame the owners for anything that happens with that viciously trained dog. Good to hear that there is a program that is helping to put these future pits in a better light!

I have always believed that it is not the breed of the dog, but how it is treated that makes the dog! I once had a dog that was a mix of pit bull, doberman and chow. He was the sweetest dog! They do have a bad reputation because of handling, not the way they are treated!

I am suprised that the AKC would have anything to do with this... they aren't much more than an organization that profits off of breeding (be it puppy mills or not) and they STILL don't recognize the pit bull as a breed..... sorry, no one attack me please! I just don't think that the AKC is the friend of any dog at all..... (other than those awesome stuffed animal toys they make.... i gotta admit, they are just about the best plush toys around) :)

Sorry but you have your facts screwed up. Puppy registrations help pay to fight Breed Specific Legislation laws, and to help the Canine Health Federation-which aids in improving dog health overall.

They are registry that hold sanctioned event for your dogs to get titles. They even have a program for spayed and neutered dogs from rescue. They aren't magical but they do a lot more than most other registries.

So yes, the AKC wants you to register your dog with them for money-but it goes towards good things.

I doubt if the American Pit Bull Terrier will ever be AKC registrable-but a LOT of breeds aren't. Out of 500 dog breeds, the AKC recognizes under 200. Doesn't mean its bad.

Mostly it's the way they are raised as to how they turn out, but there are some times in life that they can't be totally trusted. This is the same for all animals, not just pit bulls.

10 THUMBS UP, Zootoo!! This is a great story and I am glad to see the Pitties featured in such a positive light - they and many other breeds get a bad rap just because of their breed, size, appearance and it is classes & programs such as these that can highlight what great dogs they all are!! Congrats to all making this program a success!!

I can't stress enough how refreshing it is to read a "nice" pit bull story. They should publicize all the stories of Pits as therapy dogs as well.

They just are NOT the breed for everyone. And people get them for all the wrong reasons.

Great positive article. Like any other breed, pit bulls become what they are taught. Just walk down any street and you will see "beware of dog" signs or dogs barking angrily behind fences that are not pit bulls.

That's so good to hear that they would take the breed that has a bad rap to test and show that they really are a good companion breed. I am proud to say that I own a pitbull that everyone says is a great dog... Especially our mailman! He loves our pit and will always call him to the fence for a good head scratchin!

It's about time that pit bulls are given the credit they deserve. I just got house insurance and one of the first questions they asked was "Do you have a dog on the "list"?" The company wasn't interested in insuring us if we did. I have worked at an animal hospital for almost 12 years and have NEVER had a problem with any of the pit bulls we take care of!

I hope this story gets out, because pitt-bulls are great dogs and I would never think differently upon them. I've seen smaller dogs bit and become agressive, and I think to myself, why don't these dogs ever get bad reps? I salute all the pitt-bulls, there the BEST!!!

I am so glad there are groups and people out there to show that "bully dogs" can be just as good as other dogs. The problem is not only their reputation but how they are raised, and if they are raised right, they can be good dogs too. We need to start addressing those people who make them "bully dogs" in the first place!

Pit Bulls are great. They are just like any other dog when it comes to behavior. And in my lifetime I have known few nasty pits - and plenty of other dogs that bit and fought and attacked. So enough with the "bad" pit bull stories. We need great Pit Stories - like this one!!!!

What a great idea! I love pit bulls, and I hate that they get so much bad publicity. Every pit bull I've known has been very loyal and loving. I volunteer at a shelter, and my favorite dog is a scarred pit bull who was probably used as a bait dog... he's one of the sweetest dogs I've ever known and he loves everyone he meets.

It is about time that attention was brought to the fact that animals behave in ways that are influenced by environment. These dogs aren't bad dogs, they are treated in ways that make them bad dogs, and unfortunately the traits of the breed make them susceptible to that kind of treatment.
