AKC Program Improves Pits

Browse News

TAMPA BAY – Pit bulls are commonly in the news, making headlines in stories involving violence, like dog fighting or attacks. But a training class in Tampa Bay, Florida is showing how this breed isn’t born mean, and how environment contributes to the behavior of any animal.

A recent “Canine Good Citizen” class at the SPCA of Tampa Bay was full of dogs which obeyed commands, constantly looked to their handlers for direction, and barely barked while running through drills. In what may surprise fearful animal observers, this class of overachievers was full of pit bulls.

“They aren’t some other species just because they’re a pit bull. They have the same characteristics as ‘regular’ dogs – they’re loyal, good companions and easily trained,” said Donna Bainter, Behavior Manager for SPCA Tampa Bay.

While known as the “bully breed”, this class of dogs -- one after another -- jumped hurdles, sat and stayed on command -- without being controlled by a leash, navigated turns in and out of cones, experienced simulated crowded conditions involving dogs and humans, and allowed Bainter to check their face, teeth and fur.

Bainter said she can’t explain Insurance Information Institute statistics that show pit bulls as being involved in the most number of dog bites across the country. She blames the “bad rap” on media coverage and perceptions of an uneducated public that doesn’t take into consideration how an animal is treated and sheltered as factors too.

Stories don’t “look at the way the animal is housed -- that it lives on a logging chain that weighs more than the dog, or that it’s used for breeding and not a ‘family pet’,” Bainter said. “So you see ‘family pet attacks’ and this dog probably never spent more than five minutes in the house. It makes a big difference.”

Pit bulls are considered “working dogs” so they need more structure during training, explained Bainter, as opposed to a sight hound, or greyhound, which are more visual and need different type of training, said Bainter.

The “Canine Good Citizen” certificate can be earned by any dog, and the guidelines are the same across breeds. While the certificate doesn’t guarantee “something won’t happen later,” Bainter said it does confirm that “at the time the dog took the test, it met all the requirements.”

You can find out more about the “Good Citizen” evaluation by visiting the American Kennel Club (AKC) Web site at akc.org. For classes and certifications, check with your local SPCA and Humane Society.

I agree that it is more the environment than the breed. So many people get a dog because of the breed, but have they done the research, do they know how to train and love this dog? Not always. More people get bit from labs than any other breed. But look at the percentage of homes that own a lab-very high percentage. That's the only reason the numbers are high. People think dobermans and rottweilers are mean, I have yet to meet a mean one. They are just easy to train. Any breed requires a considerable amount of training and time maintaining it...

Good timing. More news such as this needs to be shared as a new bill is being discussed in the Florida legislation banning pits in this state.

Owner who make the effort to have their dogs achieve the "Canine Good Citizen" (CGC) are definitely more committed and involved in a good way in their dog's lives. These dogs are the ones who won't be making the headlines because they have responsible and caring owners. Achieving it is something every dog and owner should strive for.

While attending a seminar, a trainer from NYC brought his pit bull along. She was without a doubt the sweetest thing, on the small side and loved to cuddle with anyone willing. These dogs have been used and abused by cruel and stupid people for money and gambling.

Shame on them for destroying the reputation of an otherwise wonderful breed.

AHS is lucky to have a former volunteer who is now a dog trainer who will donate spots in her classes to shelter pups. We've gotten on pit mix a CGC thanks to Dana's classes (Sophia made it through barely because she doesn't handle being left alone very well, but she still passed!), and volunteers definitely think that adding it to any of the longer term residents be they pits or not is a great way to advertise them as good companions.

The three biggest problems with pit bull:
- Irresponsible owners
- Humans that aren't educated about pits or dogs in general
- The failure of owners to properly socialize and train their dogs

I find this article to be very imformative and I appreciate the positive side of the pit bulls that it points out. Pits are very smart and loyal dogs. Environment plays a very important role for all breed of dog. Any dog can be mean if it isn't treated right. I have seen far more mean smaller breed dogs than I have of the large breed. The larger breeds just do the most damage when they bite. I think that everyone should be educated on the various breeds and that insurance companies need to take a closer look at their statistics. It is unfair and unjust to ban specific breeds.

I'm glad to see more good news reports on pit bulls, I own two and foster one (anyone interested?). The statistics show that Amstaffs, Pit bulls, and Staffies scored the highest training scores, and being an owner I think more good stuff should be broadcast.

Great story! I've owned a Dobie, Rottie & Pit at the same time. (Unfortunately time has taken the 2 older dogs). You should've seen them groom each other, sleep in the bed together, & swarm invited guests for pets. Dogs raised with love and affection are a great joy to have in your life.

As with any animal, you have to train the dog properly. I know some dogs by nature are agressive but training them to behave takes time and by providing a balanced atmosphere with lots of love I feel the animal behave. It all starts with the owner.
