North Shore is a prestigious result oriented rescue shelter and animal welfare organizaton. Not only do they come to the aid of smaller shelters with their Tour of Life trips, but they accept animals from shelters throughout the country--animals that very well might be euthanized because of lack of space and the wherewithal to get them adopted before it is too late. Additionally, in the New area they volunteer their really large and good looking vans to be used by less well financed shelters and rescue groups allowing these good folks to bring their precious charges to local adoption events in style.
How wonderful for this organization to extend a helping had to animal shelters all across America. And yes, many people don't like to go to shelters. It can be very heart breaking to see so many animals in cages. Often, dogs in cages either become hyper active, jumping up and down or, withdrawn. Either way, can make them seem unadoptable. However, out in the open, walking around in a normal life back drop... I hope thousands of animals find new homes through this program. And a huge thank you for this organization taking the time and money to raise awareness to the plight of homeless animals.
Most shelters I know have a policy, if you can't keep the animal bring it back. You're not allowed to find another home for it yourself. I don't see how they can travel thousands of miles and make sure these people keep these pets.
If I read the article correctly, they are just helping other shelters get their animals adopted. If those shelters have "return" policies then I believe the animals will go back to that particular shelter... This organization is just trying to public awareness of smaller shelters that may not get much attention in their communities. We're one such organization. We don't get any public recognition and we don't have a facility. This type of event would allow us the ability to have our community see our the animals we care for and possibly get them adopted out. At least, this is how I read the article...
I think the idea of local shelters taking to the malls and roads in their own communities is a wonderful idea! I don't know how I would feel about adopting out our animals across the US when we have a very firm policy of follow up and support for those animals we adopt out....it's so important to have close follow up with adoptees and make sure the pet they chose works out well in their new home...with an unconditional return policy so that they don't end up being homeless and out on the streets or end up in a home where they don't fit! The idea is a great one but I hope most of it is done on a local level.
This is an awesome assistance program for shelters across America. It would be nice if they could stop at more shelters but I know time and budget constraints have to dictate limitations. Our shelter had its own personal NSAL "Tour of Life" of sorts last summer. North Shore was one of the many groups who helped us find homes for the hundreds of puppy mill dogs that we rescued from a local puppy mill last August. When NSAL's big van headed back to New York, not only did it contain puppy mill dogs but included some of our long-time shelter dogs. So, I wish both vans a safe journey on this "Tour".
What a nice article. This tour is something I hadn't heard about - and it's in the ninth year! It is coming to one of the states that I live in and I'm going to check out the schedule. Thanks ZooToo for this information.
As economic conditions steadily are getting worse in our country, I saw on the news tonight, that many more pedigree dogs are being turned into our shelters,as people cannot afford to keep them anymore. This will certainly help to ease the burden in some places.
I agree that getting the animals out of the shelter for viewing is a great idea. People are getting to see the animal in a social atmosphere, where everyone is a little more relaxed. I too hope that the usual adoption process is being used.
Kudos to NSLA, Purina, and everyone who makes this program happen. Anything that will help get these pets in good homes is a plus in my book. I hope this does encourage a lot of people to visit shelters and find a new friend.
I would hope they are still screening thoroughly and not allowing this to happen. I think they are just trying to get more people to visit the shelters and give these animals a chance.
This is a wonderful idea. I think its a great way to educate the public about adoption. Just getting out there and making it more of a public event helps immensely. So many people don't think about shelter animals because its "out of sight, out of mind." I just wish they could involve even more shelters.
