Abandoned Horse Grabs Public's Heart Strings

Browse News

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Nearly $12,000 has been raised to aid the recovery of a severely injured and abandoned horse in Mesa, Ariz.

Equine Voices Rescue and Sanctuary, an Arizona-based horse rescue organization, learned of the horse, now known as Solo Vino, in the beginning of March. A woman contacted Gwen Cleary, saying she found the 6-year-old thoroughbred near her property, in extremely bad shape.

Cleary is now fostering the horse and monitoring his progress.

"He was very weak, very thin, and could barely walk down the street," Cleary recalled.

She quickly placed a call to Karen Pomroy, founder of Equine Voices, knowing that they would not turn Solo Vino away.

"We got a call and were asked if we could help and we said, 'Of course,' " Pomroy said.

Yet the case was more intense -- and costly -- than Pomroy had anticipated. The horse suffered a three-and-a-half-inch gash in his head, which had caused his skull to shift five inches.

"That is just how severe the blunt force trauma was," Pomroy explained of the bone's movement and fractures.

The horse also displayed signs of ringbone, a condition that is offset by "excessive impact on horses' legs," Pomroy said.

"This is not something that happened naturally to him."

The initial veterinary costs were estimated at $7,000, a daunting price for the small nonprofit devoted. Media outlets caught hold of the story, and within weeks, the publicity proved to take a life of its own, Pomroy said.

To date, more than 240 people from across the country have sent in monetary donations, totaling $12,000 -- the extra money, the founder says, can go toward Solo Vino's continuing rehabilitation and future medical procedures.

"I've been blown away at how much support we have gotten," Pomroy said. "I have never seen such a public out cry and it is really just amazing. It has kind of made me renew my faith in humans."

Cleary also weighed in on the fundraising success, saying that people "are sick and tired of the abuse.

"They want to hear good endings and happy stories and not awful things like this," she said.

There was a brief moment of panic when Pomroy realized how much it would take to help Solo Vino get well, she said, noting that she considered fundraisers and grant writing as two potential options.

"Regardless, we were definitely committed to making sure he received the care he deserved," she said. "I'm not one who says the money isn't out there, so that's it. It's like, 'Let's do this, let's figure out a way.' "

In the end, though, the public figured it all out for Solo Vino, Pomroy and the other organizers at Equine Voices.

Now in the care of his foster family, Solo Vino continues to get better.

"His spirits are lifted and he is eating really well," said Cleary, noting that Solo Vino has gained more than 100 pounds in the past month.

"I'm just happy I was there to help -- that's just what this is all about."

Investigators don't know what happened to the horse, but glue on his tail indicates that he had passed through auction circuits some point recently.

He is tame, albeit a little timid; Pomroy says she hopes the horse can find a permanent home in the coming months.

"He's very gentle," she said. "Obviously he gets a little nervous and can be shy at times, but he is a sweet, sweet boy."

Aside from caring for abused horses, Equine Voices Rescue and Sanctuary also serves as a "voice for women who are faced with the difficult decision of whether to take PREMARIN or an equivalent HRT drug," according to the organization's Web site.

PREMARIN, an acronym for "Pregnant Mares Urine," is a hormonal drug commonly taken by women. Female horses are sometimes subjected to becoming pregnant repeatedly, and then producing urine for pharmaceutical companies.

Equine Voices tries to rescue the mares and fowl that are eventually disposed of, and sent to auction houses.

It seems strange that one could abandon a horse without notice. The idea of a stray horse had not really occured to me. I suppose it is very possible in a rural area where their are fewer people to witness the large animal wandering about.

This happens more than most people realize. We have cases all the time around here when people either don't care about the horse anymore or can't afford to feed it-they let them loose.

The head trauma is really strange. I've seen some horses hit their heads hard enough that you can tell they gave themselves a concusion - and those all occured 'naturally', as in no one was beating the horse. None of those horses shifted their skulls. Makes me wonder if he fell out of a trailer?

Ringbone - well, a lot of horses have ringbone. Some horses just have OCD which leads to ringbone and others do get it due to work. Can it be a sign of abuse, yes, but is it always, nope.

This horse deserves a great life and it looks like that's exactly what he'll be getting. I've watched the horses on Animal Planet that have been starved and abused. I cry. Thank goodness for these rescuers.

One of my doctors handed me a prescription afew weeks ago. I couldn't make out his hand writing. Whenever the pharmacist handed me the prescription and I looked at t, I refused it. I called the doctor back and he gave me anothr rx where NO animals are " abused". I do find this Premarin practice abhorent.

Wow, it sounds like it was hit by a car or something with all the trauma it had to it's head and legs. I'm really glad they were able to raise the money to help him...I'm surprised nobody saw it sooner, as I lived in that area and there are tons of horse people that live in and around Mesa....Hopefully it will make a full recovery.

its astonishing how cruel and heartless people can be towards animals.they have feelings and emotions just like humans.Solo did nothing wrong and didint deserve the abuse he suffered.but im glad that some people out there cared enough to donate money to help pay for his veterinarian bills

Every time I read stories of cruelity and neglect of animals, it makes me physically sick. How can people that do this and not have any feelings? Have we turned into a society where compassion and concern are no longer part of the human equation? These people need to be found and punished.

Lucky for him to wander into the arms of a loving person. Horses are being left at sale barns here in the mid-west at an alarming rate. People are not considering what it takes to take care of a horse long term. Hope the economy turns around soon before any more animals are abandoned.

It is unimaginable to me that people can be this mean, and that they can get up each day and face themselves. What a beautiful horse. Hats off to his foster people, the wonderful recue that has helped him, and all those who donated towards his care. The info on Premarin was new to me. It's just another confirmation that greed is what's hurting our society. The pharmaceutical companies will do anything to make a buck, and their exploitation of humans is appalling, as well.

Solo Vino had the angels looking out for him. There's no telling what kind of trauma caused these severe injuries. It's amazing that he trusts on any level after what happened. The dedication and determination of the rescue organization and the foster family is awesome. I wish Solo Vino a long, happy, healthy life.

I guess I'm naive about the Premarin issue, so it was interesting to learn those facts. Definitely something to be concerned about and to make others aware of.

Happy to hear Solo Vino is in the hands of wonderful people. I would also like to thank them for making a difference in the PMU industry. Educating the public (particularly women) about premarin and the PMU industry can make a huge difference to the well being of these beautiful animals. There are rescues dedicated to find home for foals from PMU mares as well as PMU mares that no longer are productive for the PMU farmer. Unfortunately, if there is a demand for premarin there will be a demand for PMU farms. My part to help will be to ask every women reading this to research premarin and other options for menopause. The knowledge gained will help you make the right choice and may save a life.

I was afraid to read this story, but I am glad that it has a happy ending. I am so disgusted with these sick souls that get their kicks out of abusing animals. I still think that these laws should be so much stronger, there might be less murders if these types would be in jail for a long long time.

So sad what this horse must have went through. I would never take that medicine. I'm glad that so many people cared enough to contribute money to the horses recovery. For the most part, people love animals and have big hearts when it is made known that there is an animal in desperate need. Hope this horse gets the good home he deserves.
