SCOTLAND – A dog handler in Scotland found out that a bark is worse than a bit, when you spend your day with a van full of barking dogs.
Handler Thomas Donnelly has sued the state, claiming he's suffered hearing loss thanks to the canines he's paid to round-up.
The worker's claim was supported by at least two doctors, who said the inner ear damage was likely caused by chronic noise exposure.
Donnelly testified to the court that he regularly has as many as four dogs with him as he patrols.
He says the dogs constantly bark, either at passersby or each other. Donnelly has had to wear hearing aids since 2002, and at work now uses hearing protection.
A report published in the Oxford Journal says among dog handlers, those working from a van have the highest risk for hearing issues.
The test subjects in that study did not show any hearing loss – but the decibel level in that environment is abnormally high.
