9-11 Miracle: Guide Dog Saves Owner from Collapsing Tower

Browse News

NEW YORK -- Where the World Trade Center once stood, an obstructive fence diminishes the public’s view of Ground Zero, but for a blind man, Michael Hingson, memories of 9-11 remain within arm’s length, in his former guide dog, Roselle.

Roselle helped Hingson flee Tower 1, enduring 78 flights of stairs -- which was only the beginning. Once they exited the building, their lives remained in danger.

"The most miraculous part of the story to me is the part that people don’t pay attention to," Hingson told Pet Pulse from his home in California. "That is, that we were less than a hundred yards away from Tower 2 when it collapsed. And we had to run for our lives, literally, to get away from the falling tower.

Hingson says Roselle displayed the same qualities that fateful day that she always had.

"She did exactly what she was supposed to do to keep us running and avoiding other people," he said. "Because everyone was running in sheer terror and panic."

In lower Manhattan, Ground Zero’s cranes fill the sky, constant reminders of Sept. 11 to passersby on the local streets. In the shadows of the site of the attacks sits the fire company, Ladder 10. Its firefighters who paid the ultimate price on 9-11 are memorialized outside the firehouse, their faces etched on an expansive bronze plaque.

Meanwhile, Roselle lives with Hingson, though she is no longer his guide dog. Roselle retired 2004 when she was diagnosed with a blood disease that’s now under control.

A former marketer and salesman, Hingson has a Master's in physics. He now impacts people around the world as a motivational speaker, with talks focusing on the importance of teamwork and inclusion.

During a recent speech to U.S. soldiers, Hingson said, "What guide dogs are really about are not guiding blind people from one place to another, but that guide dogs represent teamwork in action, in the most basic and realistic way possible."

After Hingson's speech, the soldiers gave him a standing ovation.

"Mr. Hingson and Roselle showed all of us today that without having that trust and line of communication from both ends, that you cannot work as a team," one solider said.

Another audience member said, "There really is something to be said about the human spirit, and what we can overcome. And like he says, he doesn’t overcome it alone, he overcomes it with Roselle."

Then there are the search and rescue dogs that responded in the aftermath of 9-11. Estimates say that up to 350 dogs were working either at Ground Zero or at the other sites affected by the attacks.

A University of Pennsylvania study has tracked about 100 of those dogs, finding that, for the most part, they’ve suffered no ill effects as a result of their work.

"I think the legacy is one of an example of what our animal friends can do, and what we can do when we team with them, and work with them," Hingson said. "It shows how much better we all are, or can be, when we work, and play, and love together."

Construction of the new World Trade Center continues, while traffic was brisk at the visitors center and memorial. Like time, Roselle and Hingson are marching on.

"I think 9-11 offers us a chance to think about lessons that we could learn from what happened," Hingson said. "I think about the time right after 9-11, when this country was so unified. And now we are more divided than we have ever been. We don’t need to do that."

"In the midst of tragedy," Hingson said during his speech, "we can sometimes find our true strengths."

I felt very fortunate that I knew how important dogs, whether family pets or working dog are to humans. What I realize now is how important teamwork is. And yes, working in the shelter environment I always am reminded of giving an animal second chances, but I forget how many times the animals give humans their sceond chance as well

What a wonderful article! It emphasizes several things that are important to survival in this world: trust, companionship, and teamwork. It also reminds me of the time when my cousin and I went down to Ground Zero, with bags of dog food, and blankets for the search and rescue dogs. (We also gave many needed supplies for the firefighters and other rescue personnel!). I remember seeing that several of the dogs had burned paws from the heat of the rubble. I am just grateful for the help they provided in the searches. Truly, this is another example of how our lives are made better by having animals around us!

It's good to read a TRUE story of of a dog who was a hero on 9-11. There are so many heartwarming but untrue stories floating around on the internet, I'm glad to hear of a dog who truly was a hero on that day. The bond between dogs and their humans is amazing.

This is yet another inspiring story that shows that dogs and humans were meant for each other. That the connection between the two is beyond that of a simple animal and an owner. It is amazaing at what both dogs and humans are capable of when they work together...

I loved this story when I first hear about it 7 years ago and it is still a moving piece. Such a tribute to the human animal bond and the tremendous value of service dogs.

So beautiful a story! Just imagine what it must have been like...all the chaos, screams, fumes, poor visibility...and Roselle knew just what to do. And I imagine was more focused and calm than the other poor victims at the WTC that day.

Bless Roselle and all Search and Rescuce dogs that do what they were trained to do. But most importantly, did for the LOVE AND CARING OF HUMANS <3<3<3

Kisses to their burned and torn paws. To their more than irritated eyes. To their pure exhaustion...and still kept going. XO

I live in earthquake county and we had some dog heroic stories here too. One rottweiler dog jumped through her neighbors window and rescued someone from a falling cabinet. Amazing. She got a medal for it.

What a miracle it is that this man survived and could not do so without his canine companion. She truly is more than just a guide dog. What a blessing that he has taken this life experience and is sharing the inspiration with others.

This dog was trained at the guide dog school that I worked at throughout the 90's. It never ceases to amaze me what these incredible animals can and will do for the people that they serve. Roselle was a true hero that day, and every day that she donned her harness and went to work. The partnership and bond that exists between a visually impaired person and their guide dog can not be put into words.

Dogs have a sixth sense. A dog (Pomeranian) that was just recently adopted from our shelter saved her new owners life. The dog kept jumping up on her lap and sniffing and pawing gently at the owners throat. The owner got worried and went to the doctors. It turned out she had a massive tumor. he had it removed and will be starting therapy soon and should make a full recovery b/c the dog found the tumor and the doctors were able to catch it early enough.

What a mighty article to read right now during our presidential campaigns going on non-stop it seems. Everyone of us needs to remember 911 for what it did in the end. It brougth us all together! 4 paws or 2 hands it didn't matter if there was someone in need, both helped. I think like he stated in his speech, "In midst of tragedy, we can sometimes find our true strength." I know that to be true with alot of my family & friends during 911 & other serious health troubles. God bless.
