8-Foot Alligator Surprises Elderly Woman

Browse News

OLDSMAR, Fla. –- A central Florida woman found an unexpected, unwanted guest in her kitchen late Monday night -- an eight-foot-long alligator.

Sandra Frosti, 69, says the gator pushed through the back porch screen door and then gained access to the home through an open sliding glass door. It apparently traveled through the living room, down a hall and into the kitchen.

A trapper from Animal Capture of Florida removed the alligator. No one inside the house was injured, while the gator was cut by a plate that fell during its capture.

Residents who call the state’s alligator hotline are told that gators removed from homes will be harvested or killed for its meat and hide. Residents then can rescind their request.

Some people choose to cohabitate with the gators upon learning they’re not released, according to Linda Collins of the Florida Wildlife Commission Call Center in an interview with Pet Pulse.

If harvested, caught alligators are given to trappers as payment. According to the FWC, only about 33 percent of all complaints result in the nuisance alligator being taken.

While Frosti was unharmed, the Web site, Wikipedia, reports that 13 people have been killed by alligators in the U.S. this decade. However, the University of Florida contends residents are more likely to be struck by lightening than attacked by an alligator, where 350 people since 1948 have been attacked, 19 of which were fatally injured.

I've seen shows on Animal Planet where they have to capture an alligator, but I've never seen that they killed them. It usually show them being brought to gator sanctuary.

That is because most of the time they dont like to show what normally happens. Like for most states, when the capture raccoons they are required to send the to the lab to be tested for rabies. And if you know how they test for that you would know that it requires the removal of the head. If you watch animal planet, I am sure you heard them say (after capturing a certain sized gator) that they have to put it down for "safety reasons"

Yes, I never thought of that when they say the had to put them down.

I know that they remove the head of an animal to test for rabies. That's what they did to the dog that attacked my son.

I am not for them destroying the animals, but how are they becoming so people friendly that they will go into someone's home? That is scary! The story said he broke in, but normally he would have never come close to that house-makes ya wonder if someone was feeding him or if his environment is being destroyed and taken over by humans so he has to break and enter to eat. All I know is if I came home to him in my kitchen-I would walk on water to get away from him that's for sure!

It is wrong to kill a gator like that but I see what they are going for. a) if released the gator might be less frightened of humans- making it dangerous later- and it might try to get back into a house (esp. if it eats something while there- sorry but gators will eat fluffy or fido if given the chance) AND b) They want people to realize that the gators are there and the people have to get used to it- the gators were here first. If they aren't in a house, B comes to play, but if they ARE in a house, A comes to play... still a sad thing to lose

This would be pretty scary but I agree with everyone that there trapping & killing the gator is just wrong. I think there should be another number of the "policy" should be changes. There has to be a "safe Haven" somewhere in florida where these gators can go

The people in the state need another phone number to call for a resource that won't kill these animals. They need a choice other than killing the gator or living with it in their home!

We need to remember, the gators were here first! We are encroaching further and further into their territory, and when hungry or confused or just plain bored, animals will do what comes naturally! I can't believe they allow the gators to be trapped and poached in essence- that is sadistic- there should be some way to transfer the gators to the glades or someplace else safe.

This is why you shouldn't leave your doors open or let your critters roam in FL. That cat's lucky he's smart, 'cuz he's also a bite-sized tasty treat to a gator. We also have coyote's preying on local pets. Personally, unless you live out in the country and they're keeping the rats out of your barn, keep your cats indoors. It's much safer. My ex-roommate lost 2 free-roaming cats in one year, one to a neighbor's dog that got out, the other to a combination of feline aids, leukemia, and a nasty infected foot wound.

Florida is soooooo dry during this time of year. The gators are on the move to find water, food, etc. Believe me, Mr. Gator was not there for a visit. He was hoping for a tasty snack, like Kitty or Poochie. Yes we are taking up their domain, but that's the price of growth. Gators should be removed entirely off of the endangered list. And I am told they taste like chicken! I'll remain a vegetarian, thanks!

With the gator habit/living space being infringed upon, you will hear/see this kind of story more often.

Shame the gators caught are killed - after all this was their land before man built on it.

When you live in areas such as Florida, that are known to have lots of alligators in the wild it should be considered that one could end up in your house. I'm glad no one was hurt, but sad to hear what happens to the unwanted guest.

i seen this story on the new i couldn't believe it. it just amazed me how it made it's way in to her kitchen. i don't care where you live i would not be able to expect someting like this and i would never get used to the fact that something like this would happen i guess i will make sure to stay living in the area where i am at right now and where these creepy animals are far far away....

When people live in areas like this you have to expect this kind of thing to happen. I'd be building block walls so my dogs wouldn't get eaten or kids harmed. I wonder what those people do that decide not to have the gator removed. Do they remove it themselves? How interesting...

I think its quite disgusting that they kill or "harvest" all the alligators they capture and turn in for money. They have every right to be released back into their own environment. Anywho, Im sure this women got the shock of a lifetime.

Sorry, but wild animals have a right to this land too, despite our idea of 'owning' it. If you don't want them in your house, close and lock your door. That's how unwanted people stay out. It is completely uncool that the gators get 'harvested' (god, how disgusting of a word to use on anything but plant life) once they are captured.

OMG.. thats scary. In my area, we have a similar problem with black bears. Just last week, a bear broke into someones home. The police shot it and it ran off, wounded. NOT GOOD! When you live in certain area, you need to take the proper precautions.

Yikes!! How scarey! While I wish they could release these gators back into the wild instead killing them for their meat and hide, I also wonder if it's really the best thing for them to do. I mean, once these gators find their way into a home, or attack a household pet or person, are they more likely to do it again? Maybe even adopting a "hunger" for it? If that's the case, then I guess killing them is best. At least they're using their meat and hide and not just killing them and throwing them away.

They dont tend to eat humans, most of the time its mistaken identity or to test (kinda like sharks test things they dont know). But gators tend to enjoy the taste of dogs. But I believe this gator was only trying to find a place to cool off, not for food. Gators usually hunt at the waters edge.
