800 Rescue Dogs Cause International Adoption Craze

Browse News

PHOENIX – The rescue of 800 Chihuahuas in a filthy rural Arizona home last week made headlines around the world.

It was an extreme case of hoarding, which caught the media eye and turned out hundreds of goodwill seekers who then got ugly in the process of trying to adopt the rescued dogs.

Nearly 800 small dogs, mostly Chihuahuas, and 82 parrots were found in a large mobile home near Tucson by the Humane Society of Southern Arizona.

When the news broke on the international media circuit on Thursday, a frenzy descended upon the shelter, said Spokeswoman Jenny Rose for the shelter.

Calls reportedly came in from Germany, Australia and across the nation.

With hundreds of people packing into the shelter to inquire about adopting the dogs, tempers flared and a couple incidents of shoving matches broke out, said Rose.

The sheriff’s department was called to the scene and dispersed the crowds; the shelter then closed for the day.

But on Friday, a crowd of 500 was waiting for the doors to open. To manage the crowds and maintain order, the shelter passed out numbers and had the applicants return in groups of 100 each day since.

“This has been uncharted territory for us,” Rose said. “We would like to give everyone a dog who is interested, but we just don’t have enough.”

To deal with the crowds and overwhelming interest, the Humans Society has had to call in staff members out on vacation, and has cancelled a free spay/neuter event for pit bull owners, which had been scheduled on Friday.

According to Rose, the crowds have not only been overwhelming but persistent in tracking down information on the shelter, and even herself.

One man from Massachusetts dug up Rose’s cell phone number and woke her up with a call Saturday morning.

“He said, I know it’s 8 o’clock there, but I really want a dog,’ ” Rose said.

“Oh, thanks, that’s sweet,” she retorted.

Currently all the adoptable dogs have found forever homes, while those with medical conditions or are yet too young, are in foster homes.

People who were in Thursday’s line and were not able to adopt a dog have been put on a waiting list and will be notified when the puppies mature and the sick ones recover.

As for the lingering crowds of hopeful adopters, Rose said, “You’re just going to have to stop by and see what you get.”

The hoarding case stemmed from an elderly couple, who Rose said, owned the animals and would not part with the pets since they felt no one else could give them a new home.

While no charges have yet been filed against the couple, the home was in poor condition, rampant with urine and feces, said officials.

How in the world do 800 dogs go unnoticed in a community. Surely someone knew about this. Why wasn't it reported?

It was reported to the county facility and unfortunately they okayed these people 3 times (last one being in Sept. 2007) I wish we would have known about it then so we could have intervened before so many dogs were born.

While it's great that these dogs are being adopted so quickly, I really hope it isn't because of their "celebrity status." There are so many other animals in shelters all across the US (and the world) that need to be adopted. Yes, I'm happy about the dogs getting adopted, but what makes them so special? What about the other animals that need homes? Why aren't people jumping for them?

Why can't people respond like this daily for all the animals in shelters? It is amazing what a little publicity will do. I can't even imagine what 800 animals in one place looks like. Imagine the noise?!

People should want to adopt all dogs at rescues or shelters, not just these because they were in the news. I realize these dogs need homes too, but they all do.

Okay....so do animals in need of homes have to be in some outrageous situation to have that much interest. I just wish that for one day everyone had a home and a family that loved them. Do these people want the dog or the ability to say that they have a dog that was on the news.

I am glad that there were enough people wanting the dogs that they all found good homes, or are at least being taken care of before they can find a home. Too bad some people had to show such bad character in adopting them.

I hate to hear about cases like this, the first thing these people say is "I love animals" but how can you give adaquate care to 800 dogs.

I would have tried to adopt one of those dogs too! I can imagine how they all survived in such a small place. It must have been really hard and dirty!

Why would anyone let things get this out of control and how could a shelter take care of this many for even a short time. Thank goodness they were quickly adopted.

It is nice that these animals will be able to have forever homes now, hopefully with ones that will love and take care of them.

So many people responded for these dogs, what happens when this happens to mixed breed dogs that don't fit in your purse?

I hope the homes found for the dogs are forever homes. While it is commendable that all those people came forward to adopt the dogs in need, would they have run to the shelter in a frenzy like that under normal circumstances? It makes you wonder...

Wow! Unbelievably reaction. Can't believe they all found forever homes. All those folks who didn't get one of the chihuahuas can visit a local animal shelter, there are plenty more dogs up for adoption (and just as cute!).

Good for these dogs to get homes, but my goodness the shelters everywhere are full. Let's get passed the cute little dog idea and realize even without publicity like
this there is a real need for adoptions EVERYWHERE.

the poor doggies. i wish the people who came to adopt would consider taking other animals at the shelter too--every dog deserves a good home, not just the ones that were on tv!! besides, i don't think people who push other people around would make good pet owners...

sounds like tucson-- a friend of mine who lived there had a comparable number of cats. It's sad that international people are more interested in inbred dogs rather than helping the humane societies affected by hurricane katrina-- the gulfport shelter puts down between 1500 and 2000 animals a month.

As an employee at this shelter, this story is very misleading and not all true. I love how the story focuses on the potential adopters fighting instead of how hard all our employees and volunteers worked to provide a place for these animals. We had to create temporary pens at our training center and all employees worked overtime to evaluate and vaccinate each animal. Also, each dog had to have it's nails trimmed and desperately needed a bath. The financial burden of taking on these dogs has been overwhelming and this article doesn't even focus on the fact that we need help! We are happy so many people showed up to adopt, and a lot of our bigger dogs were adopted too. But we actually got hate mail and angry people because we were charging more for purebreds and we weren't responding to the possibly thousands of adoption applications we received. For ZooToo to claim to be such advocates, they definitely focused on the wrong issues of this story and showed our shelter in a semi-bad light. Our shelter did not close after adopters got into a fight. We did our very best to control the crowd that was overwhelming for our staff. I'm not sure any shelter would know how to handle this situation and I feel we did a wonderful job. We were calm, organized, and focused on the well-being of the animals, as well as performing our regular duties. I hope people realize that this problem is a direct result of not spaying/neutering your animals. If you would like to donate to this case, go to www.hssaz.org

Thank you so much not only for the additional information but for obviously caring very much about these dogs and making sure they were now properly taken care of. Obviously you had a huge ordeal to deal with and it could not have been easy.

It was nice to read more from someone who experienced this first hand Meredith. Thank you for shedding more light and the details of what happened. My heart goes out to you and your staff and I couldn't imagine how overwhelming this was for your shelter! I must say you've done a wonderful job in finding homes for these animals and my hat is off to you and yours! Give you and your staff a big pat on the back! Great Job :o)

Did all of these people all of a sudden decide that they needed a dog? There are millions of dogs in shelters across the country waiting for home. I do hope all of these applicants were well screened so these little guys will end up in good homes.

I have heard so much about this story! Lots of people have come to our shelter asking about if we were going to get any of them sent to us! Oviously with those crowds I see why we didn't! I wonder the same thing as others...How did they afford to feed them? It was reported (I'm surprised they didn't mention it in this article...) That even though the conditions they were living in were poor, they were overall in good health and fed well. I hope to hear about a follow up!
