800 Rescue Dogs Cause International Adoption Craze

Browse News

PHOENIX – The rescue of 800 Chihuahuas in a filthy rural Arizona home last week made headlines around the world.

It was an extreme case of hoarding, which caught the media eye and turned out hundreds of goodwill seekers who then got ugly in the process of trying to adopt the rescued dogs.

Nearly 800 small dogs, mostly Chihuahuas, and 82 parrots were found in a large mobile home near Tucson by the Humane Society of Southern Arizona.

When the news broke on the international media circuit on Thursday, a frenzy descended upon the shelter, said Spokeswoman Jenny Rose for the shelter.

Calls reportedly came in from Germany, Australia and across the nation.

With hundreds of people packing into the shelter to inquire about adopting the dogs, tempers flared and a couple incidents of shoving matches broke out, said Rose.

The sheriff’s department was called to the scene and dispersed the crowds; the shelter then closed for the day.

But on Friday, a crowd of 500 was waiting for the doors to open. To manage the crowds and maintain order, the shelter passed out numbers and had the applicants return in groups of 100 each day since.

“This has been uncharted territory for us,” Rose said. “We would like to give everyone a dog who is interested, but we just don’t have enough.”

To deal with the crowds and overwhelming interest, the Humans Society has had to call in staff members out on vacation, and has cancelled a free spay/neuter event for pit bull owners, which had been scheduled on Friday.

According to Rose, the crowds have not only been overwhelming but persistent in tracking down information on the shelter, and even herself.

One man from Massachusetts dug up Rose’s cell phone number and woke her up with a call Saturday morning.

“He said, I know it’s 8 o’clock there, but I really want a dog,’ ” Rose said.

“Oh, thanks, that’s sweet,” she retorted.

Currently all the adoptable dogs have found forever homes, while those with medical conditions or are yet too young, are in foster homes.

People who were in Thursday’s line and were not able to adopt a dog have been put on a waiting list and will be notified when the puppies mature and the sick ones recover.

As for the lingering crowds of hopeful adopters, Rose said, “You’re just going to have to stop by and see what you get.”

The hoarding case stemmed from an elderly couple, who Rose said, owned the animals and would not part with the pets since they felt no one else could give them a new home.

While no charges have yet been filed against the couple, the home was in poor condition, rampant with urine and feces, said officials.

it's a shame that people had to start shoving one another but i guess things just got a little overwhelming. i wish there would be such a big rush for larger dogs since thee are so many in the shelters and on death row

i agree that while it's wonderful that so many people came to the rescue of these dogs, where are they any other time of the year when all of our shelters are over populated?

That is a lot of dogs. I can't believe so many people came forward to adopt them. Why don't they come forward to adopt the ones we already have in the shelters that are going to be euthanized.

Wow, but where were all these people before the dogs were featured on television? Was it that or is there a great demand for chihuahuas? I hope all these people are properly screened.

I was glad to see so many people wanted to adopt these dogs, too bad there isn't as much interest in adopting all dogs in shelters.

Geez. like 800 homes are gonna get a dog. Can 800 people really have nothing but a kind and caring motive? I hope that this mob has good intentions for these poor dogs. It would be a shame for these dogs to go to homes that just want them for breeding purposes or worse.

I'm sure people mean well when they start to do things like this, but at some point you have to realize that there is a limit to what you can do and how many animals you can take care of. This is the second case in the last week that I have heard about like this. Where is everyone at that sees this going on while it's happening and does nothing about it....at least the animals are on their way to good homes....

Its crazy that these people got to the point that they had 800 dogs....what really troubles me is that people go nuts to adopt them because of the media attention but there are thousands of other dogs in need of a home. why not adopt a different dog?

If those people all want a dog, get one that was there before the chihuahuas were brought in. If they still run out, ship in some dogs or send them to area shelters. I don't see why this should be a problem, but people are dumb sometimes...

Although it is heartwarming to read about the fantastic response from the public to stand in line all day to adopt one of these 800 dogs, and/or to donate to such a large rescue, I do wish more of us could be helpful on a daily basis. Dramatic events such as this are responded to, dramatically and loudly, but millions of our four-legged friends suffer, one at a time, daily and silently.

800 is a LOT... how the hell were they cared for??.. ok, it was in a terrible state, but what on earth mad them have so many??

and.. just because chihuahuas are the 'must have' dogs of the fashion world, doesnt mean to say that there arent any other dogs to consider

I think it's sad that many animals are put down waiting for someone to adopt them every day. Why does it take something like this to push people to adopt? Were the people who didn't get a chihuahua given the chance to go through the shelter and look at the other adoptable dogs?

This is a very happy ending. It is sad that all these people were fighting to get one of these dogs. It would have been great if they would have taken home some of the ones that were already there.

Its hard to believe that no charges have been filed yet. If hoarding 800 dogs in filthy conditions is not a crime, what is? The craziness that followed proves people really want to save a life. If shelters could figure out a way to increase interest in the animals at their shelters, more adoptions would take place.

Very sad, But turned to very awesome. That is so wonderful, that so many people came to the dog's rescue. Thank you Jesus. I love great ending's. It break's my heart when I hear sad story's about abandoned or abused, or neglected animal's.
I own 2 cat's. And in my neighborhood their is a barn on the other side of a fence that separate's my place and the one next door. Iv'e lost track how many cat's each spring I end up feeding. They live in the barn, and new babie's come out each spring.
I have 2 that have adopted me, and I can pet them and everything. But I can't bring them in cause of the 2, I have. And beside's them needing to be spayed or neutered. And a flea bath. But I do the best I can to feed them and tryed to give them a warm place to stay in the winter. It's so sad. But that's all i can do.

Hopefully the people who sincerely wanted to help out by adopting one of the 800 will find another dog at the shelter now that the 'famous' dogs are gone or to ill/young to be adopted.

Can't even imagine 800 dogs. It is too bad that larger dogs and mixed breed dogs don't get this many people wanting to adopt them. I wonder how many of these people are actually prepared for caring for the dogs. They see the story and think how sad, but had not been planning on adopting an animal before.

I don't think that there is any excuse for what this couple let happen. They should have known better then to let the situation get that out of control. 800 dogs...who can even imagine that many dogs in a triple wide? Granted they are small dogs, but still. And some cages had as many as 12 dogs in it? I think that they should be charged with animal abuse. Too many of those dogs were sick because of there carelessness. It is fantastic that they were able to get homes for them!

As a volunteer with a group who has felt overwhelmed with the seizure of 25 Maltese dogs at one time, I can't begin to imagine what must have happened here! However, just handing out chihuahuas to everyone who wanted one seems pretty bad, too. Did they screen, ask about previous pets, ask for vet references, ask about small children in the home, etc? That to me is just as much a concern as placing the 800 to begin with.

What a wonderful problem, to have 800 dogs and not enough for all the people who want to adopt them! And kudos to the people at that shelter, it had to be a crazy week for them, hope they feel very good for what they did! They deserve it!
