800 Rescue Dogs Cause International Adoption Craze

Browse News

PHOENIX – The rescue of 800 Chihuahuas in a filthy rural Arizona home last week made headlines around the world.

It was an extreme case of hoarding, which caught the media eye and turned out hundreds of goodwill seekers who then got ugly in the process of trying to adopt the rescued dogs.

Nearly 800 small dogs, mostly Chihuahuas, and 82 parrots were found in a large mobile home near Tucson by the Humane Society of Southern Arizona.

When the news broke on the international media circuit on Thursday, a frenzy descended upon the shelter, said Spokeswoman Jenny Rose for the shelter.

Calls reportedly came in from Germany, Australia and across the nation.

With hundreds of people packing into the shelter to inquire about adopting the dogs, tempers flared and a couple incidents of shoving matches broke out, said Rose.

The sheriff’s department was called to the scene and dispersed the crowds; the shelter then closed for the day.

But on Friday, a crowd of 500 was waiting for the doors to open. To manage the crowds and maintain order, the shelter passed out numbers and had the applicants return in groups of 100 each day since.

“This has been uncharted territory for us,” Rose said. “We would like to give everyone a dog who is interested, but we just don’t have enough.”

To deal with the crowds and overwhelming interest, the Humans Society has had to call in staff members out on vacation, and has cancelled a free spay/neuter event for pit bull owners, which had been scheduled on Friday.

According to Rose, the crowds have not only been overwhelming but persistent in tracking down information on the shelter, and even herself.

One man from Massachusetts dug up Rose’s cell phone number and woke her up with a call Saturday morning.

“He said, I know it’s 8 o’clock there, but I really want a dog,’ ” Rose said.

“Oh, thanks, that’s sweet,” she retorted.

Currently all the adoptable dogs have found forever homes, while those with medical conditions or are yet too young, are in foster homes.

People who were in Thursday’s line and were not able to adopt a dog have been put on a waiting list and will be notified when the puppies mature and the sick ones recover.

As for the lingering crowds of hopeful adopters, Rose said, “You’re just going to have to stop by and see what you get.”

The hoarding case stemmed from an elderly couple, who Rose said, owned the animals and would not part with the pets since they felt no one else could give them a new home.

While no charges have yet been filed against the couple, the home was in poor condition, rampant with urine and feces, said officials.

I could not imagine 800 dogs in one home! How did this go so long without someone noticing?? Too bad an international incident can occur every day for all the animals in shelters in need of homes.

I was thinking that we need to have better public education about how to spot hoarders and what steps to take which would help the people and save the animals.

This story is both interesting and disturbing. I am glad that the dogs found homes but wonder why there are not so many people interested in adopting EVERY DAY for ALL the animals that need homes. Spay and neuter is so important - can't believe they cancelled a clinic!

They did not cancel the spay/neuter clinic, merely rescheduled it, they had just had to take in a bunch of dogs from the county shelter because of a raid on a well established ring of pit bull breeders that also trained for fighting. It netted over 150 dogs that now have to be housed until the people are prosecuted. At about the same time there was another hoarding case of about 100 cats. Fortunately, other shelters in AZ and 1 or 2 out of state helped to get all of the animals into safe places. All of these things coming so close together put a huge burden on our animal rescue community; many kudos to them all for stepping up so quickly and professionally to get all of these animals taken care of so well!!!

That's a happy ending to a sad story. I own 2 chihuhuas and I know they need a lot of love and attention and room to run around and play in, I don't know how 800 could fit into one trailer.

These dogs are very lucky the press picked up the story. it's amazing how many people came from far away to adopt. Did they look at their own shelters first?

I am glad the 800 were taken out of their horrible conditions. I am also glad to see such an interest and turnout of people wanting to offer forever homes (although the fights weren't good) Kudos for all that helped and all that now have additions to there family.

Having 2 Chi's, I know how much attention just 2 require. I hope these poor dogs find loving homes. They are such loyal companions and deserve much better conditions and lives than that.

we really have to start monitoring what is going on with all this breeding. it also is not good for the animals to be inbred so much. we must start thinking of stricter regulations and we must stop treating animals like a business and treat them more of a living being

It's great to get that kind of publicity and support from people (if they are sincere). I hope they all get adopted to much deserved homes. However, people need to remember that there are other dogs too that need homes.

Wouldn't it be great if all those people went to all the shelters with unwanted animals to adopt them. Maybe if the news media would advertise all shelters, people would run to adopt them.

With 800 dogs to place, you would still hope they took time to properly screen adopters. What's with these crazy people storming the shelter - like there aren't any other shelters or rescue groups who have Chihuahuas (or other dogs) in need of homes??

I'm almost at a loss for words. 2 seperate problems here. The 1st. of course is the couple that were hoarding the animals. The other and almost worse than the original problem was the crowds of people going to adopt. We have thousands of shelters with thousands of animals waiting for homes, but reading this story you would think we have a scarcity of homeless dogs. Also how do you screen the adopters?

These people thought they were doing a good thing. I'm glad that someone helped them see reason and now those animals will be well cared for. That should put their minds at ease. They should get some kind of counseling so it doesn't happen again.

I don't see how they could house much less FEED 800 dogs. Its great so many people want to help an adopt but it seems only because they are part of a huge rescue, there are other dogs, not chihuahuas, that need homes and instead of being mad they don't get a rescued dog from this case, they could give a great home to another dog!

This is unbelievable! How in the world could you feed 800 dogs? Well I guess they could not and this is why they were taken away. I just can't understand how these seemingly good intentions get so out of control so quickly. It is nice that so many people wanted to help but the situation should never have happened in the first place.

What I don't understand is how no one had reported this BEFORE it got to these astronomical numbers. Didn't anyone realize that they had all these dogs living there? It's sad, as I really believe that these owners really didn't mean any harm - unfortunately it just got so out of control they didn't even know what harm it was causing.

These people are just nuts to have this many dogs in a trailor. I don't understand how this could go on for so long without anyone knowing about it. The stench alone should have clued someone in.

It is wonderful that all these deserving animals found loving homes, don't get me wrong. Still, hundereds more that suffered abuse and neglect but did not recieve attention from the media will die because they are not adopted. People shouldn't need a headline to adopt an animal in need of a home.

Yes, my feelings are the same as yours. It breaks my heart to see all the animals housed at the Shelters, and some are kill shelters, which says it all. These poor animals don't deserve to be let behind by people that are heartless. They deserve better than that, they also have feelings, and can't understand why they are left somewhere in a cage, or worse yet, left to run on there own, not knowing were to turn to next.
