800 Rescue Dogs Cause International Adoption Craze

Browse News

PHOENIX – The rescue of 800 Chihuahuas in a filthy rural Arizona home last week made headlines around the world.

It was an extreme case of hoarding, which caught the media eye and turned out hundreds of goodwill seekers who then got ugly in the process of trying to adopt the rescued dogs.

Nearly 800 small dogs, mostly Chihuahuas, and 82 parrots were found in a large mobile home near Tucson by the Humane Society of Southern Arizona.

When the news broke on the international media circuit on Thursday, a frenzy descended upon the shelter, said Spokeswoman Jenny Rose for the shelter.

Calls reportedly came in from Germany, Australia and across the nation.

With hundreds of people packing into the shelter to inquire about adopting the dogs, tempers flared and a couple incidents of shoving matches broke out, said Rose.

The sheriff’s department was called to the scene and dispersed the crowds; the shelter then closed for the day.

But on Friday, a crowd of 500 was waiting for the doors to open. To manage the crowds and maintain order, the shelter passed out numbers and had the applicants return in groups of 100 each day since.

“This has been uncharted territory for us,” Rose said. “We would like to give everyone a dog who is interested, but we just don’t have enough.”

To deal with the crowds and overwhelming interest, the Humans Society has had to call in staff members out on vacation, and has cancelled a free spay/neuter event for pit bull owners, which had been scheduled on Friday.

According to Rose, the crowds have not only been overwhelming but persistent in tracking down information on the shelter, and even herself.

One man from Massachusetts dug up Rose’s cell phone number and woke her up with a call Saturday morning.

“He said, I know it’s 8 o’clock there, but I really want a dog,’ ” Rose said.

“Oh, thanks, that’s sweet,” she retorted.

Currently all the adoptable dogs have found forever homes, while those with medical conditions or are yet too young, are in foster homes.

People who were in Thursday’s line and were not able to adopt a dog have been put on a waiting list and will be notified when the puppies mature and the sick ones recover.

As for the lingering crowds of hopeful adopters, Rose said, “You’re just going to have to stop by and see what you get.”

The hoarding case stemmed from an elderly couple, who Rose said, owned the animals and would not part with the pets since they felt no one else could give them a new home.

While no charges have yet been filed against the couple, the home was in poor condition, rampant with urine and feces, said officials.

Holy wow! I thought I'd heard about this, but I live in a sort of bubble; the thought occurred to browse these news files, and imagine that. Well, I'm glad those adoptable were adopted!

I wonder why it took so long to discover all of these Chihuahuas dogs in one place. I am glad people are adopting them.

Nice but also sad. Sad because there are so many other dogs waiting in shelters to be adopted and nobody is there lining up for them like this.

Every state legislature needs to pass a law prohibiting puppy/kitty mills. It should be a felony and require a mandatory jail sentence. This is the only way to stop it!

Other than being in a cramped space, the dogs and parrots were cared for, loved and fed well - a huge feat for an elderly couple with that many pets. At least they loved the animals. I now wonder, with the mass adoption, how many of the pets that were adopted will not be brought to loving homes.

i'm glad that people stepped forward to adopt these poor chihuahua's that have been very neglected. i only wish there would be just as many people who would step forward to adopt some of the larger mixed breeds and purebreds that we have in our shelter, that are just as cute and loving and just as much in need of good homes

Okay, A) how do you hoard 800 chi's in a trailer??? and B) what if the 800 dogs had been larger (say Rotties or Pits)? Things to ponder. But really, how big was this trailer???

It would be nice if all those folks who did not get one of the 800 chis, if they would just adopted from a shelter. There is more than enough small dogs in shelters. You don't have to fight over them.

You are so right Kim. I wish we could get folks that worked up. Even with our shelter having trained dogs from the prison program, we still have trouble placing them before their 90 days of prison time is up.

I can understand why so many people were interested-there's nothing better than a little chihuahua (at least to those of us who are a little biased). I've had them most of my life and love 'em to death.

I wish that the public were more educated about hoarding so that people could look at neighbors and relatives and determine if this is going on. There should be some education: how do you spot a hoarder and what actions do you take that will protect everyone involved, especially the animal victims.

I dont think people want to get involved, they think the animals are better off with the horder than where they were before.

How do you even fit that many animals in a trailor? I'll never understand that. I hope this opens peoples eyes to animals that need homes in general, not just ones that are found somewhere like this

It's hard to fathom how that many animals could fit in or outside the trailer. I guess the publicity from the story about the animals just spurred people to respond. Glad they ended up in homes. I am sure all shelters would be delighted if people were clamoring everyday and lining up to adopt all pets.

Good for these dogs, but people should be encouraged to look at the other dogs. We had that after Katrina, people would come in and want a hurricaine dog, no other. It was great that those dogs got adopted right away, but sad for the pups who had been with us for a long time and were not even looked at.

I ask the same question..,why are people only interested in dogs that are taken or confiscated from situations like this when there are dogs in need of homes daily that have been abandoned, abused or just thrown away? I'm glad these dogs were rescued and adopted, but don't forget the rest of the animals.

It seems some of the dogs will be going from one looney house to another. If these people wanted to adopt a dog, why wait for an event like that?
