800 Rescue Dogs Cause International Adoption Craze

Browse News

PHOENIX – The rescue of 800 Chihuahuas in a filthy rural Arizona home last week made headlines around the world.

It was an extreme case of hoarding, which caught the media eye and turned out hundreds of goodwill seekers who then got ugly in the process of trying to adopt the rescued dogs.

Nearly 800 small dogs, mostly Chihuahuas, and 82 parrots were found in a large mobile home near Tucson by the Humane Society of Southern Arizona.

When the news broke on the international media circuit on Thursday, a frenzy descended upon the shelter, said Spokeswoman Jenny Rose for the shelter.

Calls reportedly came in from Germany, Australia and across the nation.

With hundreds of people packing into the shelter to inquire about adopting the dogs, tempers flared and a couple incidents of shoving matches broke out, said Rose.

The sheriff’s department was called to the scene and dispersed the crowds; the shelter then closed for the day.

But on Friday, a crowd of 500 was waiting for the doors to open. To manage the crowds and maintain order, the shelter passed out numbers and had the applicants return in groups of 100 each day since.

“This has been uncharted territory for us,” Rose said. “We would like to give everyone a dog who is interested, but we just don’t have enough.”

To deal with the crowds and overwhelming interest, the Humans Society has had to call in staff members out on vacation, and has cancelled a free spay/neuter event for pit bull owners, which had been scheduled on Friday.

According to Rose, the crowds have not only been overwhelming but persistent in tracking down information on the shelter, and even herself.

One man from Massachusetts dug up Rose’s cell phone number and woke her up with a call Saturday morning.

“He said, I know it’s 8 o’clock there, but I really want a dog,’ ” Rose said.

“Oh, thanks, that’s sweet,” she retorted.

Currently all the adoptable dogs have found forever homes, while those with medical conditions or are yet too young, are in foster homes.

People who were in Thursday’s line and were not able to adopt a dog have been put on a waiting list and will be notified when the puppies mature and the sick ones recover.

As for the lingering crowds of hopeful adopters, Rose said, “You’re just going to have to stop by and see what you get.”

The hoarding case stemmed from an elderly couple, who Rose said, owned the animals and would not part with the pets since they felt no one else could give them a new home.

While no charges have yet been filed against the couple, the home was in poor condition, rampant with urine and feces, said officials.

It's good to see the animals get adopted but I wonder how many are getting good, forever homes.

its great they are getting adopted but I sure hope people know what they are getting themselves into. Doubt these dogs are all housebroken. I had a chi once that tour up 10 square feet of carpet one day while I was at work.

This story has a lot of interesting things to discuss. One - all those people want to adopt, it seems to be just that breed. Other dogs need home too. I am sure people can find a dog in there local shelters. Did the shelter get any help for this MADNESS? I know some people meant well and truely wanted to help but some it seems to be greed. Chihuahuas are the HOT dog now. Maybe I am wrong. Hope the shelter is recovering and Thank them for their service and help.

it is amazing what the media can do to help animals. These dogs prob. wouldn't have been as lucky to get adopted if the dogs weren't in the news. I am so glad they got adopted though.

It's great that they all got homes, but what about the millions of others out there who need them. A few minute sound byte on the news will get ANYTHING adopted, but a lot of people only want the dogs featured on the news... I can't help but wonder if the outcome would have been the same if it had been a large breed dog..

Very nice that all the adoptable dogs found homes, but I wonder why people went to such lengths to travel to this shelter to try to get one of these dogs. So many cute, small, adoptable dogs are in shelters all over the world, needing homes!

Hoarding is a mental disability and should be treated as such. It does not surprise me that so many behaved the way they did. Working at a shelter myself you could only imagine some of the things we have seen. I give prop's to the shelter for handling everything in this overwhelming situation.

I am happy these dogs were discovered and can now hopefully enjoy their new homes. I am surprised that the potential adopters acted so childlike ... animals need care and attention especially having come from such deplorable conditions.

How did they afford to feed 800 dogs? It is very costly for me just to feed 5 cats and 1 dog along with the 5 strays that I am currently feeding. This article does not mention if everyone was willing to only adopt these rescued dogs or if they were also willing to adopt those already residing the humane shelter and in need of a forever home. Sounds like this would be a good time to adopt most of those that were already in the shelter awaiting adoption. If they run out of dogs, I'm sure there are many shelters that would be willing to transport their animals there to be placed for adoption with caring families. I just don't understand why it is so hard to find willing parents to adopt a new dog or puppy until the media reports on a sad or abused case then everyone wants the dog(s)
