800 Rescue Dogs Cause International Adoption Craze

Browse News

PHOENIX – The rescue of 800 Chihuahuas in a filthy rural Arizona home last week made headlines around the world.

It was an extreme case of hoarding, which caught the media eye and turned out hundreds of goodwill seekers who then got ugly in the process of trying to adopt the rescued dogs.

Nearly 800 small dogs, mostly Chihuahuas, and 82 parrots were found in a large mobile home near Tucson by the Humane Society of Southern Arizona.

When the news broke on the international media circuit on Thursday, a frenzy descended upon the shelter, said Spokeswoman Jenny Rose for the shelter.

Calls reportedly came in from Germany, Australia and across the nation.

With hundreds of people packing into the shelter to inquire about adopting the dogs, tempers flared and a couple incidents of shoving matches broke out, said Rose.

The sheriff’s department was called to the scene and dispersed the crowds; the shelter then closed for the day.

But on Friday, a crowd of 500 was waiting for the doors to open. To manage the crowds and maintain order, the shelter passed out numbers and had the applicants return in groups of 100 each day since.

“This has been uncharted territory for us,” Rose said. “We would like to give everyone a dog who is interested, but we just don’t have enough.”

To deal with the crowds and overwhelming interest, the Humans Society has had to call in staff members out on vacation, and has cancelled a free spay/neuter event for pit bull owners, which had been scheduled on Friday.

According to Rose, the crowds have not only been overwhelming but persistent in tracking down information on the shelter, and even herself.

One man from Massachusetts dug up Rose’s cell phone number and woke her up with a call Saturday morning.

“He said, I know it’s 8 o’clock there, but I really want a dog,’ ” Rose said.

“Oh, thanks, that’s sweet,” she retorted.

Currently all the adoptable dogs have found forever homes, while those with medical conditions or are yet too young, are in foster homes.

People who were in Thursday’s line and were not able to adopt a dog have been put on a waiting list and will be notified when the puppies mature and the sick ones recover.

As for the lingering crowds of hopeful adopters, Rose said, “You’re just going to have to stop by and see what you get.”

The hoarding case stemmed from an elderly couple, who Rose said, owned the animals and would not part with the pets since they felt no one else could give them a new home.

While no charges have yet been filed against the couple, the home was in poor condition, rampant with urine and feces, said officials.

800 dogs is hard to imagine, I can't even imagine 100 in my home! How did they walk, move, or even live?? This is extreme! Such a shame that the shelter had to cancel such important events bc of two ignorant people. I hope that all these people who want dogs so bad can look elsewhere, there are plenty of dogs our there that need homes with just as heart tugging stories.

I cant believe that all of those dogs were all in the same house! How did they feed all ofthem? I am just glad that are safe now and that they can be adopted to responsible people that will take care of them.

The couple who had those dogs should be made to pay for their medical care and never allowed to own any animals. What a shame those dogs and parrots had to live in those conditions!

They are elderly and lived in a trailer. I somehow doubt they would be able to pay. They certaily couldn't afford care when they had all of the animals so I doubt they would have it now.

How large can "a large mobile home" be?? How could 800 dogs and 82 parrots possibly have fit into that home???

I adopted one of my German Shepherds from a rescue organization called Camp Wolfgang that has about 200 purebred German Shepherds for adoption. There are tons of purebred dogs needing homes as well. If people want a purebred dog, there
are plenty available for adoption- - -they don't have to buy one from a breeder.

800 dogs and 82 parrots! I'm not sure I've heard of a case with that many animals before. I'm so glad they have all found homes, sounds like it was crazy for the shelter. If the people that didn't get the dogs really want to adopt, I am sure there are other shelters or rescues that have available dogs.

People in my community thousands of miles from this shelter actually asked me about it. Amazed that such a situation could exist. It gave me a great opportunity to talk about these sorts of situations and how puppy mills are not much different except that they do sell some of the animals.

Its funny how people come out of the wood work in response to stories like this that might never choose to go to their local shelter or look on PetFinder. They want to help or be a part of these media events. I think they are good people and good to come to the aid in these situations, I just wish they would be more proactive and not wait until the BIG STORY hits the news.

I saw this story on Nancy Grace a few days ago. It's truly sickening that the owners never got their animals neutered. These animals may be sick with genetic disease due to interbreeding with siblings and such. It's great that people want to adopt, but why only these dogs? What about all the other dogs that are in shelters around the world that no one wants?

It seems like so many people just want the tiny stylish dogs like chis. Its nice that everyone wants to help, but where were all these people when thousands of other kinds of dogs are being euthanized? It is also very inconsiderate of the people to be rude to shelter workers.

i am glad that the dogs were able to find good homes. Alot of people showed up to adopt because htey were a desireable breed dog that is small. It is a sad situation when dogs are put down but it is an unfortunate reality that small dogs get adopted much faster than large dogs.

I never heard of this case. First, know Chihuahuas are small, but 800 of them plus all those birds seems nearly impossible to me. How does someone aquire so many animals and over how long of a period of time? Secondly, I agree with Tina F's comment that people need to relax. There are plenty of needy Chihuahuas out there. Fighting and making calls from across the country is crazy. Petfinder can find the breed you want without a person having to exhibit poor behavior.

Hoarding is a fascinating phenomon. I suppose that the people involved have no awareness that they are abusing animals and cling to the belief that they are saving them. Good to know that all the dogs were adopted or are in foster homes.

Actually I was part of this operation. We took in 752 dogs and 36 birds. The birds are not available for adoption because they all need medical attention. We are still caring and housing about 100 of the Chihuahuas becasue they are in need of medical attention. The public showed up in large numbers for days; everybody wanted one of the rescue dogs. Fortunately we could convince some to adopt other shelter dogs that were not part of the rescue. Like many of you I wish too that the communities would come together and help the shelter animals on a daily basis and not just when there seems too be a crisis that is broadcated by the media.

It's good to hear from someone directly involved. I don't mean to criticize the journalist who wrote this article, but it's interesting how the number of birds was more than doubled in this report. This is a good example of why we need to get the full story- check more than one source, and not blindly believe everything we hear or even read.
