800 Rescue Dogs Cause International Adoption Craze

Browse News

PHOENIX – The rescue of 800 Chihuahuas in a filthy rural Arizona home last week made headlines around the world.

It was an extreme case of hoarding, which caught the media eye and turned out hundreds of goodwill seekers who then got ugly in the process of trying to adopt the rescued dogs.

Nearly 800 small dogs, mostly Chihuahuas, and 82 parrots were found in a large mobile home near Tucson by the Humane Society of Southern Arizona.

When the news broke on the international media circuit on Thursday, a frenzy descended upon the shelter, said Spokeswoman Jenny Rose for the shelter.

Calls reportedly came in from Germany, Australia and across the nation.

With hundreds of people packing into the shelter to inquire about adopting the dogs, tempers flared and a couple incidents of shoving matches broke out, said Rose.

The sheriff’s department was called to the scene and dispersed the crowds; the shelter then closed for the day.

But on Friday, a crowd of 500 was waiting for the doors to open. To manage the crowds and maintain order, the shelter passed out numbers and had the applicants return in groups of 100 each day since.

“This has been uncharted territory for us,” Rose said. “We would like to give everyone a dog who is interested, but we just don’t have enough.”

To deal with the crowds and overwhelming interest, the Humans Society has had to call in staff members out on vacation, and has cancelled a free spay/neuter event for pit bull owners, which had been scheduled on Friday.

According to Rose, the crowds have not only been overwhelming but persistent in tracking down information on the shelter, and even herself.

One man from Massachusetts dug up Rose’s cell phone number and woke her up with a call Saturday morning.

“He said, I know it’s 8 o’clock there, but I really want a dog,’ ” Rose said.

“Oh, thanks, that’s sweet,” she retorted.

Currently all the adoptable dogs have found forever homes, while those with medical conditions or are yet too young, are in foster homes.

People who were in Thursday’s line and were not able to adopt a dog have been put on a waiting list and will be notified when the puppies mature and the sick ones recover.

As for the lingering crowds of hopeful adopters, Rose said, “You’re just going to have to stop by and see what you get.”

The hoarding case stemmed from an elderly couple, who Rose said, owned the animals and would not part with the pets since they felt no one else could give them a new home.

While no charges have yet been filed against the couple, the home was in poor condition, rampant with urine and feces, said officials.

I agree with Jill, we need to get awareness out like this much more often, not just in times of disaster.

It's a little disheartening that a it takes a "disaster" to raise awareness about shelter adoption.

I agree with you. Isn't it something that people lined up to adopt these 800 chihuahuas after this story was publicized? I hope that I live to see the day when people are lined up outside animal shelters across our country waiting to adopt a dog. Wouldn't that be a dream come true when there are so many wonderful companions waiting for their forever home and someone to love?

I am curious how this turned out. I hope all the dogs found homes. I have mixed feeling about the outpoor of people wanting to adopt the Chihuahuas. Glad to see people want to help but feel some are just interested in having that specific breed. Hope all turned out well.

I wanted to comment on Merideth M's comment but couldn't figure out how (since it is in the 'latest & greatest' column. I hope people send your organization money to help cover the cost of this incredible hoarding situation.

What a sad case. Hoarding is a horrible abuse of animals that stems from a very misguided attempt to "help" them. I hope these people are monitored and prevented from getting any more animals, even if they aren't charged. (They also need professional mental help!!) And I wish I could figure out a way to make all the great, adoptable dogs at the shelter I support "famous" so that people would flock to adopt them. Where are these people on an average day for non-news-making animals?!

They were all in a trailer??? I know about a girl how had 80 cats in a trailer and it was trashed so bad she had to just "junk" the trailer. I can't imagine the conditions in that place with that many dogs. I am glad so many people are willing to give them homes, though.

Animal hoarding can lead to horrible events like this, though it was nice to see that there was such a great response for wanting to adopt them.

It's great that so many of the animals have found homes and I hope the remaining animals currently being fostered eventually get their forever homes. Situations like this are so sad and unfortunately so many times by the time they are investigated it's too late for many of the animals. I believe that there are underlying issues in cases like this and if the individuals involved simply lose their animals and don't have any consequences or aren't forced to get help for what causes their "collecting" it is very likely they can end up repeating their past mistakes!

I can't even imagine!! Let's see a mobile home is about how many square feet of floor space, a chihuahua takes up how much space? Just doesn't compute.

Thats amazing 800 dogs. I can't believe someone didn't try to get those people some help like their family didnt try to help them out somehow or put those dogs up for adoption. hopefully this will show people not to collect animals. Maybe just have 2 or 3 and not hundreds

I wonder who these adopters are that come out of the woodwork for these kinds of cases. Where are they on your average Saturday at the shelter when there are no crowds but dozens or hundreds of regular shelter dogs and cats who also need forever homes?

I feel so bad for elderly hoarders. They are mentally ill and don't seem to understand that they are not taking care of themselves or their animals. That is amazing that that many people wanted to adopt the dogs. I hope that they adopted other dogs in the shelter when they ran out of the little ones. It sounds like the shelter staff did an amazing job!

That's ridiculous! I really don't think that the adopters who show up after something like this are the ones who want 'fashion dogs.'

This is one of those stories that is nice and sad at the same time. It is nice that so many people want to provide a home for those dogs. But is is so sad that there are lines of people waiting to adopt the other dogs who are waiting for homes.
