800 Rescue Dogs Cause International Adoption Craze

Browse News

PHOENIX – The rescue of 800 Chihuahuas in a filthy rural Arizona home last week made headlines around the world.

It was an extreme case of hoarding, which caught the media eye and turned out hundreds of goodwill seekers who then got ugly in the process of trying to adopt the rescued dogs.

Nearly 800 small dogs, mostly Chihuahuas, and 82 parrots were found in a large mobile home near Tucson by the Humane Society of Southern Arizona.

When the news broke on the international media circuit on Thursday, a frenzy descended upon the shelter, said Spokeswoman Jenny Rose for the shelter.

Calls reportedly came in from Germany, Australia and across the nation.

With hundreds of people packing into the shelter to inquire about adopting the dogs, tempers flared and a couple incidents of shoving matches broke out, said Rose.

The sheriff’s department was called to the scene and dispersed the crowds; the shelter then closed for the day.

But on Friday, a crowd of 500 was waiting for the doors to open. To manage the crowds and maintain order, the shelter passed out numbers and had the applicants return in groups of 100 each day since.

“This has been uncharted territory for us,” Rose said. “We would like to give everyone a dog who is interested, but we just don’t have enough.”

To deal with the crowds and overwhelming interest, the Humans Society has had to call in staff members out on vacation, and has cancelled a free spay/neuter event for pit bull owners, which had been scheduled on Friday.

According to Rose, the crowds have not only been overwhelming but persistent in tracking down information on the shelter, and even herself.

One man from Massachusetts dug up Rose’s cell phone number and woke her up with a call Saturday morning.

“He said, I know it’s 8 o’clock there, but I really want a dog,’ ” Rose said.

“Oh, thanks, that’s sweet,” she retorted.

Currently all the adoptable dogs have found forever homes, while those with medical conditions or are yet too young, are in foster homes.

People who were in Thursday’s line and were not able to adopt a dog have been put on a waiting list and will be notified when the puppies mature and the sick ones recover.

As for the lingering crowds of hopeful adopters, Rose said, “You’re just going to have to stop by and see what you get.”

The hoarding case stemmed from an elderly couple, who Rose said, owned the animals and would not part with the pets since they felt no one else could give them a new home.

While no charges have yet been filed against the couple, the home was in poor condition, rampant with urine and feces, said officials.

I think this happens a lot with high profile animal cases once they hit the national media. The AP picks up a story about a cat saving her kittens from a fire, and suddenly 200 people want to adopt the celebrity cat and 199 are disappointed when they can't. Sometimes it may translate into adoption of another animal, but more often I think it doesn't.
In this case of course it helped that the animals in question are small, cute and highly desirable breeds. If it was 800 black lab mixes in a house...? 800 pit mixes? Wow, I've gotten cynical.

Glad these poor little dogs were rescued from a horrible, disgusting living situation.
Just goes to show how many people are looking to adopt these little guys. I wonder if they were just given out or if there was any sort of adoption criteria.

I believe it. Our shelter once housed a hoarders victims. We had all kinds of offers to adopt them while they walked right by dogs that were a lot more adoptable. The hoarder victims had been caged so long they had lost their sense of cleanliness and we had to completely clean them up several times a day. They had a myriad of health problems and many were completely unsocialized. Yes, they did eventually make good pets to the right homes but what about the dogs who would have been so much easier to live with and who (since we were connected with animal control at the time) were euthanized.

WOW!! That is a lot of dogs. It's nice to see so many people wanting to adopt them. How could 800 dogs go unnoticed though?

If the puppies were being AKC registered you would think that the AKC would possibly alert someone to check out this situation due to the high volume of registrations being applied for (if this was the case). Maybe the AKC and other registries should contact local humane societies when people register a certain # of dogs per year.

Omigosh, I can't believe all the goofy people in this world! From the people who feel the need to hoard 800 dogs to the people who think they have to mob one particular shelter to obtain a dog. People! People! There are deserving animals in shelters all over this country!

It's great when people turn out in response to a news story, when our shellter did a hoarder case with 96 Shih-tzu last summer we had the same type of frenzy. I wish that it would last, our shelter takes in nearly 100 animals a day 365 days a year, I wish there were people lined up and fighting over all those wonderful animals that don't make the news but are still in need of homes.

I agree with Chicklittle (sp). Spaying and neutering is VERY VERY important. Anyone who plans on breeding will buy dogs from a breeder not the shelter. It's great that they all found homes. Hopefully the shelter makes spaying/neutering mandatory for every adoption. Then there will be less chance of something like this happening again.

I hope that these dogs are all spayed and neutered. It's wonderful that so many people are stepping up to take these dogs in. I think the person who had them maybe thought they were doing a good deed...They just didn't go about it in the right way.

Why can't this happen with the larger dogs? Most people want small dogs and the larger ones are just as lovable.

I think this is nice that so many people are stepping up and wanting to give these dogs a home, I just hope the shelter is careful and screening these people and make sure there intentions are good. I also hope that before people can get one of these dogs that they have to be spayed and neutered or else it will end up being the same scenario.

I read the first page of all the comments on this story and only one poster was concerned wether the dogs were spayed and neutered. Seems they weren't and that is sad. Could be some of these adoptees might need some new breeding stock for their puppy mills. Hope all these people just wanted a pet.

No where have I read nor heard that all the dogs will be or have already been spayed or neutered. I believe that this is a must with adoptions. It is so wonderful that so many people have responded to this, but what about the others that die everyday in shelter's? Why don't a few hundred of them contact other shelters to adopt? Does it take horrible media coverage for some to find their heart?

Why is it that only these stories which gain so much publicity get people into the shelters to adopt? What about all the others already there? Of course this is a sad story, but every single animal in the shelters has a sad tale to tell.

I'm not sure I understand why people were so riled up to get these specific dogs. It's wonderful that people want to help provide homes for animals in need but they're available every day of the year. Did they just wake up one day, see the news and say "I've got to have one of those dogs!" Hope the homes these dogs found are right and they're not like pet rabbits on Easter! I do understand that small dogs are desirable to many people though and perhaps Chihuahuas even more so.

The great interest to help by adopting one of these animals is amazing, but people need to stop and think about what they are doing. It is not helping the animals by fighting with each other, hopefully they can find families that really have the dog's best interest at heart and will provide them with good loving homes.

It's so hard to believe that no one notices hording to this extent and it takes 800 dogs living in bad conditions for something to be done. It's unexpected that so many people came out for a dog. Glad it ended well. Hope the pitbulls get their spay/neuter day back :)

Thank God those poor animals were rescued! And, to the people who didn't get to adopt one of the dogs, PLEASE consider another homeless animal at a shelter. They all need a forever home, and they will give you unconditional love in return.

It's nice that there is such an interest. Aren't there shelters where the out-of-town people live? If so, they need to start there. I'm sure they thought with 800 dogs there would be plenty to go around, but people, stop and think.

Why can't these people go to their local shelter and adopt a dog? I think it's great that they are so eager to help, but come on, shoving matches over adopting! There are plenty of homeless pets to go around, many of which are probably closer to their homes. How did a neighbor, relative, anyone not notice the number of animals before it reached eight hundred? I mean fifty sounds like a lot of dogs to mean, even if they are little.

People crawl out of the woodwork to adopt when a big cruelty case breaks but for the average young, healthy, well adjusted dog, there is frequently no one. Too big, too bouncy or maybe it's just because they didn't make the headlines. The new owner couldn't talk about out they had saved a poor, abused dog.
