800 Rescue Dogs Cause International Adoption Craze

Browse News

PHOENIX – The rescue of 800 Chihuahuas in a filthy rural Arizona home last week made headlines around the world.

It was an extreme case of hoarding, which caught the media eye and turned out hundreds of goodwill seekers who then got ugly in the process of trying to adopt the rescued dogs.

Nearly 800 small dogs, mostly Chihuahuas, and 82 parrots were found in a large mobile home near Tucson by the Humane Society of Southern Arizona.

When the news broke on the international media circuit on Thursday, a frenzy descended upon the shelter, said Spokeswoman Jenny Rose for the shelter.

Calls reportedly came in from Germany, Australia and across the nation.

With hundreds of people packing into the shelter to inquire about adopting the dogs, tempers flared and a couple incidents of shoving matches broke out, said Rose.

The sheriff’s department was called to the scene and dispersed the crowds; the shelter then closed for the day.

But on Friday, a crowd of 500 was waiting for the doors to open. To manage the crowds and maintain order, the shelter passed out numbers and had the applicants return in groups of 100 each day since.

“This has been uncharted territory for us,” Rose said. “We would like to give everyone a dog who is interested, but we just don’t have enough.”

To deal with the crowds and overwhelming interest, the Humans Society has had to call in staff members out on vacation, and has cancelled a free spay/neuter event for pit bull owners, which had been scheduled on Friday.

According to Rose, the crowds have not only been overwhelming but persistent in tracking down information on the shelter, and even herself.

One man from Massachusetts dug up Rose’s cell phone number and woke her up with a call Saturday morning.

“He said, I know it’s 8 o’clock there, but I really want a dog,’ ” Rose said.

“Oh, thanks, that’s sweet,” she retorted.

Currently all the adoptable dogs have found forever homes, while those with medical conditions or are yet too young, are in foster homes.

People who were in Thursday’s line and were not able to adopt a dog have been put on a waiting list and will be notified when the puppies mature and the sick ones recover.

As for the lingering crowds of hopeful adopters, Rose said, “You’re just going to have to stop by and see what you get.”

The hoarding case stemmed from an elderly couple, who Rose said, owned the animals and would not part with the pets since they felt no one else could give them a new home.

While no charges have yet been filed against the couple, the home was in poor condition, rampant with urine and feces, said officials.

I'm happy that there are so many people wanting to help out the rescued dogs and I hope they all find good homes. But there are so many other dogs in the world that need homes. Why fight over a limited number of dogs when there are an unlimited supply available in shelters in this country and all around the world? It seems to me that if these people truly care about dogs they'd adopt any available shelter dog, not just the ones from the story.

I love dogs just as much as the next person, but 800 is an outrageous number. I am glad to hear that most of the animals found forever homes and it looks like the rest will too. It is just isane that one couple had that many animals and I hope they will be dealt with properly.

Seems to me with that many people waiting to adopt dogs, perhaps they could have put a call into all the local shelters in the area to bring all of their dogs over with volunteers and maybe a lot of shelters could have placed a lot of dogs, no one would have gone home empty handed (that deserved to take home a dog) and lots more dogs would have had homes. Just a though but I know they were overwhelmed.

I am so glad that so many people wanted to help. It would have been tragic if they had to put some of the animals down because they could not find homes for them!

I don't see how people live in those conditions. 800 dogs in one home just sounds disgusting. I am glad there were more people than dogs for adoption and I hope they all get good homes.

Although, this is sad that the dogs were kept in horrible conditions, in the end it turned out to have an amazing outcome. All 800 of these dogs were able to find homes with people who will love and care for them. I love to hear stories like this that have great endings.

800 dogs in one mobile home? That's mind boggling. I know it's been a mountainous amount of work for the Humane Society. how fortunate so many came forward to adopt.

I am so glad that people came in a hoard to adopt these dogs. I had heard this news days ago and did send it to zootoo probably with others. I was sad to hear how many dogs were found inthis mobile home and the conditions, not as bad as it could have been , but the rescue! The pics of the staff that rescue in such sadness but knew that they had to help them but how to find homes!!!

I was worried about the shelter that took them in , because I know when we rescue 100- 200+ cats . It is a drainon staff and out finances.

I am glad we have media to send this event over seas so people could adopt.
Sorry to hear about the commotion in town.

There are mixed feelings for me, too, about this story. The poor animals were in a very difficult situation....and no way to help themselves. The couple loved the animals and didn't realize how much their love was hurting them. Then there is the community! What is wrong with them?! I haven't heard about something this with animals before. I'm glad they care, but I wonder how many of them didn't even look at any of the other animals available when they found out the Chiwawa's weren't available anymore. Sometimes I just shake my head.

I think it's great that so many people wanted to help these animals, but there are so many other animals that haven't gotten a spot in the limelight that need a good home too! We can't forget about them! There are PLENTY of homeless animals available, no need to fight over these ones!

Its nice to see so many people wanting the dogs to have a home. I feel that the couple got in over their heads, but to the detriment of the dogs, could not bear to give them up. Its too bad for the dogs that this happened to them, but in the end most found good homes.

This is a sad story. The elderly couple probably thought they were doing the right thing. Obviously they took good care of them. I can't imagine having 800 of any animal in my home. I find it amazing how so many people flocked to get these dogs. There must be more to this story. Hope they all went to good homes, and the chaos didn't cause the shelters judgement to be impaired.

This was on Nancy Grace a few days ago. It was a elderly couple who was running a puppy mill out of their trailer. What was not mentioned in the article was they found 3 dogs dead, many with paws chewed off. It was a horrible scene, but at least the puppy mill was shut down. The sad fact is the couple can only charged as a misdemeanor Not a felony, and will get $1500 fine and 6 months jail time that's it

Come on, some people are saying," too many, but abuse, no.." That's not right. How would you like it if you had to live with 800 people in a MOBILE HOME with 1 bathroom? That wouldn't be very pleasant or healthy. How can you say that isn't abuse? These animals are not getting one-on-one attention, some of them are sick, what more do you want to be wrong with this situation? Why is it that some people think that animals have to be skin and bones or have scars and injuries before it's considered abuse? The home was not sanitary, the owners were having trouble keeping up with them, they needed a new home.

Unfortunately it appears all the details not covered. This "elderly couple" were not elderly, they were in their 60s. They also had a website advertising the dogs so I would say and out of control breeder is accurate. While luckily enough, the animals were relatively healthy, there were those who were not including at least 3 dead in the home that the owners weren't aware of. The HSSAZ did an amazing job for being put in such a position to deal with these pets and the overwhelming response of the community. I just hope those who adopted were sincere about the pets and they don't end up returned or on ebay...don't forget the others out there at your local shelters whether it's a chi or the mutt in the cage next to it, they all deserve a chance.

It's wonderful that so many people came from all over and wanted to adopt the dogs. They must have had some great media coverage. I wish all the shelters - big and small could have this sort of news coverage. The people that did not get a dog should look to their own local shelters to adopt.

As far as the media and people who want to adopt these precious furry babies, that's wonderful you want to help and be good parents, but PLEASE ACT LIKE YOU HAVE SOME SENSE! That's just silly to get into shoving matches and things of that nature; You are not in kindergarden anymore. Yes, the joy of adding a new member to your family is a very involved and emotional process, but PLEASE conduct yourselves like mature adults. Yes, my family and I went wild and screamed with joy when we found out that Kelsie was coming home with us, but we did that at home, around family. It's okay if you're nuts around family, they know you're crazy! LOL But public places are a different story.

Those dogs look healthy, not typical of abuse. Was this really a hoarder or a breeder out of control? And people, there are dogs all over this country waiting for homes. Look in your own area, adopt them.

I am sorry, pls provide your readers with the whole story. A follow up story in the Tucson Star today told how many times the property had been visited before with no violations noted. I agree, there were way too many dogs there, but have you seen the pictures of the dogs. No bones showing, in fact some of them are too fat. Apparently they weren't running around indiscrimately or there wouldn't be pure bread animals. As a person that owned a grooming shop for 30 yrs. I can tell you how dogs look that aren't taken care of. Some puppies die when litters are born. Some dogs get injured with caring owners of one or 2 animals. Come on, if these animals were so abused, why were they able to place 700 out of 800 immediately. I think there is more to the story. Too many dogs to give enough attention to, yes, abuse, I bet not.

Thanks for adding information. I agree that if so many were adoptable the couple seemed to be doing their best. However, 800 is hard for me to imagine--I feel overwhelmed at times with four cats! I'm glad the dogs are no longer there and are finding homes. Even if they weren't abused, a home with fewer dogs seems best for all.

I am glad that those dogs and hopefully the parrots all get great loving homes. I think that the couple need to be charged because 800 dogs fit into a trailor is cruel and unusual punishment for animals and shelters should start investigating potential adoptees' homes to check for hoarding.

Oh my goodness. I can't even belive 800 DOGS?! 82 BIRDS?! Plus the house was a WRECK. Where was this elderly couple's kids or family members? Didn't anyone go to check up on them? I'm sorry, but that's inexcusable. I WOULD KNOW IF MY GRAND PARENTS OR AN ELDER FAMILY MEMBER HAD THAT MANY PETS, AND I WOULD BE DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT! There should be some kind of penalties for this couple, but I would also like to chat with their kids or grand kids! That's ridiculous. I may seem like a "mother hen", but I would rather watch over my family too much, than not watch them enough. It's always better to be safe than sorry. You only have 1 chance to take care of your family, and by golly I've made it my personal mission to see to it that my family is taken care of and that someone is watching them.

Great gobs o' poop! How did they even survive to gain such a multitude?! Well, at least they are taken care of now.
As far as the mob goes, I've seen people fighting over 1 small dog, and I know from experience that if a story hits the news that people are all over it, if for no other reason than to have the bragging rights of having a "media dog". It would be nice if that many adoptors would respond to the ongoing pet population issue instead of waiting for front page animals.
