800 Rescue Dogs Cause International Adoption Craze

Browse News

PHOENIX – The rescue of 800 Chihuahuas in a filthy rural Arizona home last week made headlines around the world.

It was an extreme case of hoarding, which caught the media eye and turned out hundreds of goodwill seekers who then got ugly in the process of trying to adopt the rescued dogs.

Nearly 800 small dogs, mostly Chihuahuas, and 82 parrots were found in a large mobile home near Tucson by the Humane Society of Southern Arizona.

When the news broke on the international media circuit on Thursday, a frenzy descended upon the shelter, said Spokeswoman Jenny Rose for the shelter.

Calls reportedly came in from Germany, Australia and across the nation.

With hundreds of people packing into the shelter to inquire about adopting the dogs, tempers flared and a couple incidents of shoving matches broke out, said Rose.

The sheriff’s department was called to the scene and dispersed the crowds; the shelter then closed for the day.

But on Friday, a crowd of 500 was waiting for the doors to open. To manage the crowds and maintain order, the shelter passed out numbers and had the applicants return in groups of 100 each day since.

“This has been uncharted territory for us,” Rose said. “We would like to give everyone a dog who is interested, but we just don’t have enough.”

To deal with the crowds and overwhelming interest, the Humans Society has had to call in staff members out on vacation, and has cancelled a free spay/neuter event for pit bull owners, which had been scheduled on Friday.

According to Rose, the crowds have not only been overwhelming but persistent in tracking down information on the shelter, and even herself.

One man from Massachusetts dug up Rose’s cell phone number and woke her up with a call Saturday morning.

“He said, I know it’s 8 o’clock there, but I really want a dog,’ ” Rose said.

“Oh, thanks, that’s sweet,” she retorted.

Currently all the adoptable dogs have found forever homes, while those with medical conditions or are yet too young, are in foster homes.

People who were in Thursday’s line and were not able to adopt a dog have been put on a waiting list and will be notified when the puppies mature and the sick ones recover.

As for the lingering crowds of hopeful adopters, Rose said, “You’re just going to have to stop by and see what you get.”

The hoarding case stemmed from an elderly couple, who Rose said, owned the animals and would not part with the pets since they felt no one else could give them a new home.

While no charges have yet been filed against the couple, the home was in poor condition, rampant with urine and feces, said officials.

I hope they screened these people. Some of them sound like nuts. It always amazes me how many people show up to adopt animals like this that get media attention, but how many of them would actually look at another shelter dog if they didn't get one of the media dogs? Do they actually want a dog, or a story to tell their friends.

I know they were interested in finding homes for all the dogs, but I have to wonder if the applicants were checked out to see if they were good homes for the dogs.

800 dogs in a mobile home - how could anyone have not noticed sooner!? Also, why 500 people showed up to adopt these dogs is beyond me when there are dogs needing homes in their own states and countries on a daily basis.

Hoarders need to be flushed out and animals need to be taken away from these well-intentioned, yet misinformed folks.

How did this go under the radar? How easy is it to hide 800 dogs? Hoarding is a form of abuse, though I know that the hoarder has the best intentions. Glad that the dogs have been adopted.

800??!! So how did they feed them, care for them, and so forth? And the people who wanted one of them, some nerve to call the worker on her cell phone at 8 am. Jeez! I know this is a 'breed' dog and probably hard to get, but some common courtesy would be nice.

Would be nice to have this problem with more people wanting to adopt than there are cats available. Can imagine all those dogs stuck in that small space.

We should try to post a story every week about one shelter somewhere in the country. They may not have 800 chihuahuas but they most likely have a lot of animals looking for forever homes.

Bad enough they had all those animals in one area, question is how did they get them all? Apparently they had never heard of spay or neuter programs. Glad it looks like things will work out for the animals

I'm still trying to figure out how 800 dogs and 80 something Parrots lived in one trailer home! Geez!!!
This is one of those stories that make you sad and glad. These people probably started out innocently enough, but with that amount of animals, there had to be some " reality issues" with the owners .I 'm glad that the animals were wanted and given out for adoption, but it is sad knowing that there are overflowing animal shelters all over the country ,that could use a little bit of this sort of attention from the Media to help all those animals too..

five people, one baby, and 3 bunnies?

While my husband and I don't typically see eye to eye when it comes to animals, we BOTH agree that advertising on TV really piques the interest of those who would otherwise not likely opt to adopt from a shelter. They see an animal - virtually ANY animal - on the screen and for whatever reason decide that they MUST adopt that creature. Maybe all the shelters/rescues/ACs should get a coalition going and convince every station to run a 'ticker tape' of adoptables at the top/bottom of every channel 24/7. To see the millions of homeless animals in need of a home day after day after day.....

Makes me sad that so many people are only interested in what's been advertised on TV. On the flip side, at least they showed up at the shelter. With any luck, an animal in need of a home (that wasn't subjected to 15 minutes of fame) may have found one.

Why do we only see this kind of interest in adoption when there is an interesting story to go along with it? Where are all these people while thousands of other dogs need homes? People who hoard animals are suffering from mental illness. These people usually think that they are doing the best thing for the animals. Often, they start out by trying to adopt strays out of their homes. I find their stories to be very sad.

800 Chihuahuas... that is a lot of challupes! LOL... but, story had a great ending. As it stated in the story, all the dogs had familes, except some of the young ones. It's good to see people stepping up and helping in a huge way. Kudos for everyone who was able to take a puppy and help it!
