5-legged Cat to Undergo Amputation Surgery

EIGHTY-FOUR, Pa. - A cat currently in the care of the Washington Area Humane Society will have surgery to remove an extra leg.

Shelter officials say the female feline, named Babygirl, was surrendered on Jan. 19. The person who dropped her off said the cat was stray.

Of Babygirl's five legs, two will need to be removed. But other than that she's in good health. The operation is expected to improve her quality of life.

Surgery has not yet been scheduled.

On top of the medical care, Babygirl also needs a permanent home. Shelter reps say people have called to ask about the cat's condition, but no one has offered to adopt her yet.

To find out how you can adopt Babygirl, go to washingtonpashelter.org.

Starts out with 5 legs and ends up with 3? Hopefully she'll adjust quickly.

Baby Girl has a forever home now with the people that fostered her! She is doing wonderful and she is not scared anymore and sleeps with her new family everynight. Her wonderful new family even took her brother too which he was at the shelter and was just as scared as Baby Girl.

Wonderful! I was hoping someone would post an update for us. She looks just like my Annie when she was that age (except the legs, of course). Sweet little Baby Girl.

I would love to adopt this cat, but can't do it until I move into my own place! I hope she is still available when I do. My heart just cried out to her! I watched the video and almost cried, she is just the sweetest thing! I would love to be her mommy and take good care of her!

I think it's wonderful that someone rescued Babygirl and that people made donations so she could have the surgery. The surgery was preformed on February 6th, and, according to the local news report, it went great! :-)

I'm sure she will adapt to having 3 legs just fine. I think they should have the surgery first, get her back on her feet in foster care, then put her up for adoption. I would also advertise her story around town

Perhaps the shelter should wait until after the cat's surgery to advertise it for adoption. If the surgery results are successful, the animal might not have any kind of easily detected deformity. At any rate, removing the cat's extra leg is more important at this point than placing it in a home. The story really doesn't go into any detail about the projected prognosis for the cat or how much special care would need to be provided by an owner.
