I've seen those before, their called Spotted Salamanders, they are also found Upstate NY. They migrate to their breeding grounds.

Wow, salamander mortality rates... that's something that doesn't come up very often. These volunteers are doing a good thing, although $350,000 to build a tunnel under a road for mating amphibians does sound a little ridiculous; do they really think the salamanders are going to come up to the road, think, "Hmm, if I cross this, I might get run over," and proceed to look for the nearest radically expensive tunnel they could use instead?

anything that helps something not to go extinct is a good thing. look at all the money that gets thrown away on really useless thing. i think that it is a good idea since we are the ones that kill them. at least we are trying to help and it puts people to work

That's my point... I don't see how a tunnel is going to keep them from going extinct. It's like putting up "walk" and "don't walk" signs for them... the salamanders don't know the difference between the tunnel and the road. If it saves any, it will be by the pure chance that those ones wandered into the tunnel; I only think they should think this project through a little more before wasting money on another thing that may prove to be useless.

All animals deserve our protection. Afterall, these little guys wouldn't be getting squished if we hadn't built in their natural habitat. We owe them.

As our communities/populations grow, the animals natural habitat shrinks... So then what happens...?? The wildlife comes into the neighborhoods & is then deemed a problem because they are forging for food... Sometimes they are removed & put someplace else, but some are also killed... They need all the help that they can get... So many of them... So few of us willing to help... Its sad... 1 day we may only get to see what they looked like/were in a history book...

It's wonderful that people will take the time out to help a salamander cross the road. I had to stand in the middle of the road last week in my pajamas to stop traffic after my dog's cable broke when I let her out to go to the bathroom. She wandered off quite a ways and when I called for her to come back she came running right down the side of the road. I had to make sure no one would hit her until I got her back in my arms. I might be stupid but people fly through here in a 30 MPH zone doing 100 all day and night. Everyone stopped in both directions, which was not normal and she got home safe. All animals and people should be so lucky. People drive like total idiots anymore and don't care what or who they hit and leave behind.

Nice story. As the article points out, the disappearance of even the "lowly" salamander--or any other creature for that matter--will have a ripple effect on the ecosystem. Wonderful effort by these people, but the tunnels are the way to go.

This is sad. I wish there was a way for animals and people to live together without loss. I am happy that there are people out there that are trying to help our animal world and improve their chances of living in a world full of humans.

What a thoughtfull group of people to step up to the plate and help. People put the roads in the little critters way, shame on us. $350.000 is alot of money but the goverment has spent more money on less important things I hope the foot more of this bill to build a tunnel.

Gross.......I applaud the people who are getting some of the amphibians across the busy roads. I am not sure there is really any other solution other than spending a lot of money that no one has.

I love this, people actually doing the right thing! Good for them. We have large snappers that will cross a very busy road right in front on my home, the town people actually got the town to put up a Turtles Crossing May Through October sign. Now not everyone will care, but we have managed to save some, you will see people pull over in their cars and block traffic, not always popular, you know turtles move at their own pace, but they do deserve our help :)
