28 Pups Rescued from Squalor Celebrate Joyous Reunion

Browse News

COLUMBUS, N.J. -- A remarkable transformation has come full circle for 28 puppies rescued last month when found crammed into crates in a closet with no ventilation, their hair matted, carrying contagious diseases, and covered in feces, according to the state SPCA.

“The puppies were just overcrowded, they were sick, it smelled,” said SPCA Sgt. Jane Donoghue. “It was unbelievably disgusting.”

Columbus Veterinary Hospital manager Lynn Pasquarella says she knew the facility was suddenly getting a large group of puppies -– she just didn’t know how big.

“We thought that there would probably be around ten puppies, and then at around seven in the morning they called and said there was going to be 25 to 30,” she said.

The 28 rescued puppies were treated at the animal hospital, where Pasquarella adopted one named “Panda” herself. The pups were cleaned and groomed at kennels of Columbus next door, where owner Wayne Temple snatched up Mugs.

“We took Mugs home and I thought my wife was going to have my head when I walked in the door, but she fell in love with him,” Temple said.

“Half the puppies didn’t know how to walk on the ground when we put them down on the ground for the first time,” Donoghue said. “They just froze because they didn’t know what being outside was all about. And to look and see how healthy and happy they are makes you feel wonderful.”

The pups’ rescue and cleanup was just the beginning. All 28 puppies were spoken for within just a few days. Once they had a clean bill of health, all arrived in their new homes.

“A lot of people with big hearts,” Pasquarella said. “Just we all have a network of friends that care a lot about what we do. And got a lot of people here and just did assembly line.”

Authorities say the puppies’ former owner, William Roberts, bought the dogs from a Pennsylvania puppy mill to sell them. Roberts is charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty, each carrying up to six years in prison.

Just weeks after their rescue, the puppies were reunited at the animal hospital’s annual pet fair. Amazingly unaffected by their ordeal, the pups proudly displayed bandanas bearing the NJSPCA emblem.

“Rosie,” a cuddly white Maltese, was on-hand, adopted by Jean Schaum, who teaches autistic middle school students in nearby Bristol, Pa. Already, she is using Rosie as a therapy dog in class.

“This week was the first week Rosie came to school with me,” Schaum said. “And already she has made a great impact on my school and in my classroom.”

Debbie Krisak, who took home another puppy, named “Tyler,” was among a number of owners of the rescued dogs walking the reunion grounds with their new friends.

“You feel good being able to take care of an animal that somebody is going to destroy or hurt,” she said. “And then to see the progress in him, and being such a good dog, to give him a chance.”

Roberts is the first person in New Jersey to be charged with a fourth-degree crime for attempting to knowingly sell sick puppies, according to Donoghue.

“How could somebody take these absolutely beautiful babies, lock them in a closet and just use them to make money?” Donoghue asked, holding one pup, named “Betty Lou” in her arms.

“It’s not always pretty, but in the end here we had 28 puppies,” Pasquarella said. “They all survived and got great homes. And they’re all happy and healthy now.”

“It’s a shame to see that something be just not taken care of,” Krisak said. “And yeah, it’s a miracle, it really is.”

Such a great ending to such a sad begining. I would like to see happy endings to all the stories. Needless to say I hope the man who housed the puppies in the cramped closet will get the maximum penalty allowed.

What a great ending to such a horrible story. Some people say that the reason some people do things like this is because they are sick...I don't think they are sick-I think it's pure evil! It breaks my heart to think about all the ones who don't make it into a good home. They need to throw the book at this guy and maybe other a**holes will get the message!

This guy better be locked up and have to pay a lot of money. On a brighter note, that is a beautiful ending.

If they follow through and make an example of this guy by giving him a real sentence that includes jail time for each count then maybe other idiots who think selling puppies is like selling tee shirts might get the message. But I doubt that they will

I read this article and then later last night, happened to catch Houston Animal Cops on the Tele-which just happened to have a very similar situation on about a bunch of puppies that they came across.Hearing about conditions is one thing, but actually seeing these poor puppies stuffed in tiny cages with inches of feces so thick and hardened that their little feet were infected made the story so much more awful. I am always relieved to hear that some puppies make it through, but I still have a hard time accepting the fact that this sort of behavior continues to happen all the time.We hear the occasional stories, but we don't hear about the animals that die every day because they were found too late. With so much abuse going on,it's very easy to realize that the laws are not right or strict enough yet. There are too many animals still suffering.

I thank God that these precious pups were rescued and found good homes! I cannot even imagine how people could lock these poor pups up in a closet, leave them without food, water and living in a crate! The cruelness of some people is unbelieveable. I could no more look at a puppy and hurt it as hurt myself. This story is so shameful and sad but I am so glad it had a happy ending!

What a sick individual to do something like this. To me it's just another example of someone putting a few bucks ahead of any kind of humane treatment of the animals in his care.

This just demonstrates once again the need for some legislation to more accurately define the role of a companion animal and set some standard penalties for the mistreatment of them. I really believe that it is time for a national standard, not something on a state level. The efforts by the individual states are fine but the ones doing this type of thing will just go somewhere that they don't have any rules to conform to.

God Bless the SPCA & Lynn Pasquarella for taking the puppies out of the horendous situation they were all in & turning it around. Lynn did a great job w/ the puppies getting them healthy. I am sure they all needed alot of grooming & bathing also. Everyone that worked hard to help these pups is a great person w/ a big caring heart. Please always take good care of your new found friends that have been given to your care! Great story update Zootoo, thanks:)

Oh I am so very happy these poor puppies were rescued, treated, and are now in good homes, that is the best!!! :) How sad that didn't even know how to stand on solid ground at first, they've got to be soooo happy now! I am glad this idiot who had them is getting charged, they need to be tortured the same, that would be justified for sure.

Oh my gosh. Who would stuff puppies into crates and leave them in a close.? Of course they carried disease if they were covered in feces.! At least they were rescued.!! I'm proud of the rescue team.!!!

What a great ending. After reading all these news stories on zootoo the past week or two, I'm thinking there are way too many bad and/or irresponsible people out there. Hopefully they are all caught and put in prison like this guy. But I can't help but wonder how many of these animal predators haven't been caught. That's a depressing thought. Luckily, there are organizations, like the SPCA, that are working to catch these people.

The first step in my opinion to rid ourselves of puppy mills is for people TO STOP BUYING THEIR PUPPIES. No puppy buyers means no puppy sales which means no reason to breed. But it won't happen so long as they are able to sell.

Let's hope that Roberts gets the full 6 years per count and they are not allowed to be served at the same time. Oh and let's lock him in a closet area to serve that time.

Glad the pups are okay and doing well.

Why do people do this? To most normal people, you could tell if the pup had been taken care of. And another thing, Animal Shelters don't just have puppies. There are more adult dogs that could be there for more than six months without a home. That's just not fair.

What a wonderful ending to a horrible beginning. Not only did they come from a puppy mill - they went to a closet in horrible conditions. They certainly deserve all of the love they now have. Now we must make it a mission to close the puppy mills forever!

I think that it is wonderful that all the puppies got good homes. Most the time when you clean an animal up, feed it and give it some good vet care they are fine within a few weeks. Glad to know that all these pups made it!

Yes but they should be fine before people see them. This happens everywhere and it's not fair for an animal to be locked up with no fresh air, food, or water, and then to be mated.

Very glad to hear the puppies are in their new forever homes and enjoying a REAL life. It's a shame that they didn't get to experience this sooner. I hope that the guy who did this gets major jail time...let's see how he feels when he spends a piece of his life in a 'cage'. A taste of his own medicine.

I think it's wonderful that all the pups were adopted. But what if they had all be adult dogs. Yes it's a great stoy with a happy ending, but most of the dogs not adopted are because they are older. People need to realize that most times taking a older dogs saves in house breaking and other training. Also, these rescued dogs are grateful for the rest of their lives. So remember the next time you rush to save a puppy so are 10 other people. Take time to look at the older dogs before you decide.

Agreed! And there are definite pros to adopting an adult dog. Most of them are already housetrained and some are already trained to sit, come, etc. (I've been trying for the last couple years to get my parents to adopt an older dog, but I think I'll have to wait until my dad retires and get him some "company".) ;)

Great story. Makes me so happy to read stories like this. I just don't understand how human beings can hurt other living creatures. I say it all the time, but just because they aren't people doesn't mean they don't feel and hurt. They are living breathing beins. I'm glad they all got good homes! yay!

If the rescue attempt had been delayed by weeks or even a few days, this story would probably have a much different outcome. It is nice to know that ALL the puppies were saved and placed into decent homes.

I'm not familiar with New Jersey law or the concept of a "Fourth-Degree" crime. Can anyone clarify? I'm wondering if it is at the felony level (where "up to 6 years in prison" would fall under Pennsylvania law).

I just did a quick search and found in "New Jersey Criminal Lawyer" that, "3rd and 4th degree criminal charges do not have any presumption of imprisonment if you do not have any previous criminal convictions on your record" and under the punishment for "Fourth-Degree" crimes, it is stated, "if you are found guilty of a fourth/4th degree criminal offense in NJ, the range of possible penalties is from non-custodial probation up to 18 months in prison". This punishment is NOT consistent with what is indicated in the article above!! Something is AMISS. (How about a little more accuracy??)

THis guy must be a sociopath or worse. How do you go about your day with 28 puppies crammed in crates in a closet? Hooray for the rescuers and the ones who adopted these poor babies. Now they'll have a decent shot at life it sounds like.
I had a different sort of shot in mind for the jerk who made them suffer all for the almighty dollar.
